An annual lift inspection is one of those jobs that sits on a shop manager’s to-do list until an insurance auditor, an OSHA walkthrough, or a manufacturer rep asks for the paperwork — and then it becomes urgent overnight. Why the Inspection Is an Annual Requirement, Not a Suggestion
The requirement comes from a few directions at once, which is part of why it confuses people. ANSI/ALI ALOIM — the operation, inspection, and maintenance standard for automotive lifts — calls for a documented periodic inspection by a qualified lift inspector at least once every twelve months. Every major manufacturer, Rotary and Challenger included, references that same interval in their owner’s manuals. OSHA does not publish a lift-specific rule with a calendar date on it, but the general duty clause plus the manufacturer’s stated maintenance schedule together mean an uninspected lift is a documented hazard if something goes wrong.
The practical pressure usually comes from insurance. Carriers writing garage liability policies in Iowa increasingly ask for current inspection records at renewal, and we have watched shops get a premium adjustment simply because they could produce a clean folder. Dealership groups have their own layer on top of that, because factory audits pull lift records the same way they pull technician certifications. None of this is about paperwork for its own sake. A lift holds several tons of steel over a technician’s head for hours a day, and the failure modes — a frayed cable, a worn arm restraint gear, a cracked weld at an anchor — are all things a trained set of eyes catches long before they turn into an incident. That is the entire point of the interval.
What Actually Gets Checked During an Annual Lift Inspection
We work off a written checklist, and it is longer than most people expect. Structural items come first: column welds, base plates, anchor bolts and their torque, carriage and slider block wear, arm pivot pins, and any signs of overhead crossmember damage from a truck that got raised too far. On a two-post we measure lock engagement at every position and confirm the equalization system is synchronized. On a four-post we check runway welds, slip plates, and the condition of the ramps and stops.
Then come the wear components. Lifting cables and equalizer cables get inspected strand by strand for broken wires, corrosion, kinking, and flattening, and we check them at the sheaves where damage hides. Chains get measured for stretch. Hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and fittings get looked at under load for weeping and seepage. Arm restraints have to hold, not just click. Locks have to release and re-engage cleanly and audibly. Electrical items include the power unit, the down-limit or overhead shutoff switch, the contactor, and whether the disconnect is actually functional. Finally we look at the things nobody thinks of as lift parts: legible capacity labels, present safety placards, an owner’s manual on site, adequate concrete thickness, and clean floor drainage around the base. A thorough annual lift inspection covers every one of those categories in writing.
The Five Findings We Write Up Most Often in Iowa Shops
After enough inspections, patterns emerge. Number one by a wide margin is cable condition on two-post lifts — specifically equalizer cables at the sheave, where road salt, brake dust, and moisture do their work out of sight. Iowa winters make this worse than in most states because vehicles bring chloride brine straight into the bay all season. Number two is arm restraint wear. The gear teeth round off gradually, the restraint still moves, and the operator assumes it is holding when it is not.
Number three is anchor bolts, either under-torqued from the original install or sitting in concrete that was never thick enough for the lift. Number four is the overhead shutoff on two-post lifts, which gets bypassed or ignored after a technician bends the bar on a tall van. Number five is documentation — no manual, no inspection history, a capacity label painted over or peeled off. That last one costs nothing to fix and shows up constantly. If you want to improve your odds before we ever arrive, walk your bays with a flashlight and check those five items. How the Inspection Differs by Lift Type
Not every lift gets the same treatment, and lumping them together is how items get missed. Two-post lifts live and die by cables, locks, arm restraints, and anchors, so that is where the bulk of the time goes. Four-post lifts shift attention to runway structure, cable routing over four sheaves, and slip plate condition. Scissor and mid-rise lifts have their own failure profile — torsion points, safety lock bars, and hydraulic hose routing that flexes every cycle — which is why a scissor lift annual inspection follows a different checklist than a two-post does.
Mobile column lifts add synchronization and battery health to the list, plus wheel forks and control cabling that gets run over. Inground lifts are the most involved: we are looking at cylinder condition, seal leakage, containment integrity, and whether the pit environment is dry and accessible. Repairs Found During Inspection: How We Handle Them
Finding a problem is not the same as red-tagging a bay. Our approach is to sort every finding into three buckets. Immediate items mean the lift comes out of service until it is fixed — a cable with broken wires, a lock that will not hold, a cracked structural weld, loose anchors. Those are non-negotiable, and we would rather have an uncomfortable conversation than an incident. We tag the lift, document it, and get you a parts quote the same day.
The second bucket is schedule-soon: wear that is measurable but not yet critical, like a chain approaching its stretch limit or a cylinder with light seepage. We give you a realistic window and a price range so you can plan around your busy season instead of reacting to a breakdown in the middle of it. The third bucket is monitor — note it, recheck it next year. You should walk away with a written record for every lift, not one summary sheet for the shop. Each record should identify the lift by manufacturer, model, serial number, and rated capacity, list the bay location, note the inspection date and the inspector, and itemize findings with a clear disposition. Photos help enormously — when an insurance adjuster or a factory auditor asks a question eleven months later, a photo of a cable in good condition answers it faster than any narrative.
Keep the records where someone other than you can find them. We have watched shops lose an entire inspection history because it lived in a retired manager’s desk drawer. A labeled binder in the office plus a scanned copy in shared storage covers you. Tie the file to your broader service calendar too, since fluid changes, cable lubrication, and lock function checks all belong on the same schedule — that connection between lift inspection and annual maintenance is what actually keeps equipment alive past the fifteen-year mark. Also record the daily and monthly operator checks your technicians perform.
