An auto home lift in a home-build overlanding shop is a different animal than one in a busy commercial bay, and a Waterloo overlanding builder we installed for last summer proved it in the twelve months since. His use case is heavy trucks with skid plates, roof tents, and rock sliders, and his weekly cadence is oil changes and fluid service on his own fleet plus friends’ rigs. The install: a 40 by 40 shop with a 14 foot ceiling
The Waterloo builder had a purpose-built 40 by 40 metal shop with a 14 foot side wall and a 4000 PSI concrete slab poured for the lift. We set a 10K asymmetric auto home lift with overhead configuration on his marked centers, 141 inches apart, on eight 3/4 inch wedge anchors per column drilled 4 inches into the slab. Power was already run on 240 volt single-phase to a subpanel at the driver’s-side column. The full install took under seven hours from crate to first cycle. He raised his own truck to full height that same afternoon, took photos of the skid plate for a build thread, and started using the lift for oil changes the following weekend. He does not cycle the lift daily. He cycles it two to five times a week on average.
Why cable inspection intervals depend on cycles, not months
Equalization cables on an auto home lift are rated in cycle counts, not calendar time, for real wear purposes. A commercial shop cycling 25 times a day hits 6,000 cycles a year. This overlanding builder hits closer to 200 cycles a year. His cables see essentially no meaningful wear from cycling. What they do see is time-based degradation: humidity, temperature swing, and the small tension changes that come from a lift sitting loaded at rest for hours. Manufacturers still write a five-year cable replacement recommendation regardless of cycle count, because at some point the wire rope simply ages out of confidence. In the Waterloo builder’s case, the practical cable inspection interval is annually with a visual check, and cable replacement at the five-year mark whether we see damage or not.
Month three: first cable adjustment
Every new auto home lift needs a cable re-tension at some point in the first six months as the wire rope takes its final stretch. On the Waterloo install, we came out at month three for a scheduled maintenance visit and re-tensioned both cables. The adjustment brought the arms back within an eighth of an inch of level at full height. Total time on-site: 30 minutes. We used the visit to walk the builder through the cable inspection routine himself: eyes on the cable from top sheave to bottom sheave, hands checking for kinks or fraying with a shop rag as a barrier, and a note in the log book for date and observations. He now does this quarterly on his own. If he sees anything he does not like, he calls us.
Fluid service and oil-change workflow implications
Oil changes on his own fleet are the highest-frequency work the lift sees. That means fluid on the shop floor is a regular event. On an overhead auto home lift with a clean floor between the columns, oil drainpans slide underneath easily and the drain plug is at eye level for a tech standing flat on the floor. This is one of the reasons we specced overhead on his install; a baseplate floor tube would have interfered with rolling a large drain pan under the truck. He drains, refills, and torques oil filters at working shoulder height, then lowers the lift for a re-check. The whole oil change cycle runs under 25 minutes on his own trucks. On a friend’s rig with unfamiliar skid plate hardware, it can stretch to 45 minutes. Neither is stressful on the lift itself.
What we found at the year-one cable inspection
At the twelve-month mark, we visited for a full annual inspection on the auto home lift, including a pull-out of both equalization cables at the top sheave, a full-length visual, and a re-tension check. Both cables looked new. No fraying, no kinks, no rust, no wear at the sheave contact point. Cable diameter was still at the manufacturer’s spec. We re-tensioned by a small amount, lubed the sheave bearings, and cycled the lift five times under load to verify. All good. His logbook now has month zero (install), month three (first tension), month six (self-inspection), month nine (self-inspection), and month twelve (annual). This is the pattern we recommend to every home-scale owner: quarterly self-inspection, annual professional inspection, five-year cable replacement.
Overlanding-specific concerns we watched
Overland trucks carry weight in unusual places. Roof tents add mass above the center of gravity. Rock sliders extend the pinch weld pickup line outward. Bumpers with winches shift weight forward. On the Waterloo auto home lift, we set arm pad heights carefully on the first few lifts of his own trucks to make sure the pinch weld was clean of any bolted-on hardware. Everything cleared. We also walked him through the max off-center loading rule for a two-post: the vehicle’s center of gravity must sit between the columns, and heavily-loaded roof tents count against that budget. His trucks all cleared. If your overland build has serious roof weight, tell us before you commit to a two-post; a four-post may be a better platform for extreme cases.
The takeaway for other home-scale owners
An auto home lift in a low-cycle home or hobby shop is a phenomenal piece of equipment that will outlast most of the vehicles you put on it. Cable inspection intervals should be quarterly by you and annually by a professional. Cable replacement at the five-year mark regardless of what you see. Fluid change every two years.
