Every February our phone starts ringing with the same conversation: a weekend mechanic in northwest Iowa has a 30×40 pole building, a concrete floor, twelve-foot sidewalls, and a project car that spends five months under a tarp. He wants an auto lift so he can park the summer car up top, work on the daily driver underneath, and stop crawling around on cold concrete. Then he finds a used unit on an auction site three counties over for a third of new-price money and calls us to ask whether it’s a bargain or a boat anchor. We’ve answered that question hundreds of times from our shop in Ames, and the honest answer is that it depends on about nine specific things. Here’s the checklist we walk people through.

Start With What You Actually Do in the Shop

Before you compare price tags, write down how you’ll use the thing across a full year. There’s a real difference between storage duty and service duty, and most hobbyists need a little of both. If the primary job is parking a Corvette or a restored pickup over the winter and occasionally rolling underneath to change oil, a four-post is almost always the right call. It rolls on casters, it doesn’t care much about floor thickness, and driving on and off takes thirty seconds. If the primary job is real wrenching — suspension, brakes, exhaust, wheels off — a two-post gives you unobstructed access to all four corners and you’ll be far happier with it long-term.

A guy we helped in the Spencer area went through exactly this. He was set on a two-post because that’s what he’d used at his uncle’s shop, but when we asked what he’d be doing on it, ninety percent of the answer was “storing my Camaro and keeping the wife’s Explorer off the gravel.” He bought a 8,000 lb four-post, added a rolling bridge jack later for wheel service, and hasn’t looked back. Getting this decision right up front matters more than new-versus-used, because a cheap lift of the wrong type is a permanent annoyance and a correct one at full price is a twenty-year tool. Write the use case down first.

Capacity, Ceiling Height, and the Numbers That Bite

Most home shops in northwest Iowa land on 7,000 to 9,000 lb capacity, and that’s plenty for passenger vehicles, half-tons, and most crossovers. Where people get burned is assuming their heaviest vehicle is the one in the driveway now. If there’s any chance of a three-quarter-ton diesel pickup in your future, step up. A 7,000 lb unit with a 8,500 lb truck on it is not a gray area, it’s a hazard, and we won’t service a lift someone is knowingly overloading.

Ceiling height is the other number that quietly kills deals. Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you measure a truss bottom chord, a light fixture, or an overhead door track in the raised position. For a four-post storage stack you need enough clearance for the top vehicle’s roof plus the runway height plus a few inches of daylight. For a two-post, the overhead crossbar version needs roughly twelve feet minimum, while a baseplate model routes the hoses across the floor and works fine under ten. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the actual bay, not the peak. Also check your door opening height and your concrete: two-post units want at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and older pole barn slabs are sometimes three-and-a-half. We’d rather core-test it than find out during installation.

The Used Auto Lift Inspection List We Actually Use

When someone sends us photos of a used auto lift, we look at the same items every time. Cables and chains first — frayed strands, kinks, or rust at the sheave points mean replacement, and on some older models those parts are expensive or discontinued. Sheaves and rollers next: flat spots and seized bearings are common on lifts that sat in a damp barn. Then the cylinder rods, looking for pitting or a weepy seal, and the arm pivot pins for slop. Locks matter enormously — every safety latch has to engage crisply at every position, and the lock release mechanism has to move freely.

After that we want the data plate. Brand, model, capacity, and serial number tell us whether parts still exist. A Rotary SPO-series two-post from the nineties is a great used buy because Rotary parts availability is outstanding and we stock most of what you’d need. An off-brand import with a faded sticker and no legible model number is a gamble we usually talk people out of. Finally, ask if it’s ALI-certified and ask for the original installation and inspection history. Nobody has perfect records on a used machine, but a seller who can say “I bought it new in 2009, here’s the manual” is telling you something valuable. Missing anchor bolts and mismatched hardware are red flags too.

What New Money Buys You Besides Shiny Paint

New equipment costs more, obviously. What you get is a current warranty, a complete parts book, factory-matched hardware, and no mystery history. On the models we sell, that also means gold-standard ALI certification, hydraulic components we can source same-week, and a manual that matches the machine in your building rather than a revision from three redesigns ago. For a hobbyist who plans to keep this thing for twenty years and put family members underneath it, that’s worth real money.

There’s also a resale angle nobody thinks about. Well-maintained name-brand lifts hold value remarkably well in Iowa, partly because there’s always another guy finishing a pole building who wants one. Buy a quality unit new, keep the paperwork, service it, and you’ll recover a meaningful chunk if you ever move or downsize. Buy the cheapest thing on the marketplace and you own it forever. Our general rule: if the used unit is a known brand, complete, and under half the price of comparable new equipment after you add installation and any replacement cables, it’s a reasonable buy. If it’s a mystery brand at sixty percent of new, walk away. And if you’re stretching your budget to the breaking point either way, consider a smaller-capacity model from a good manufacturer instead of a big one from a bad one. Power, Air, and the Boring Utility Questions

“Do I need 220 volts?” comes up in nearly every conversation, and the answer is usually yes for anything above hobby-grade. Most single-phase power units on residential-scale equipment run 208-230V and want a dedicated 20 or 30 amp circuit depending on motor size. Some smaller four-post and portable units offer 110V motors, and they work — they’re just slower and they draw hard on startup, which means a long extension cord or a shared circuit will cause you grief. If you’re running conduit in a new pole building anyway, put a 230V outlet at the lift location. It costs almost nothing during construction and everything afterward.

Air is the other one. Most two-post lifts use a small shot of shop air to release the mechanical locks, so you’ll want a line within reach, or you’ll be pulling a manual release every single time you lower a vehicle. It’s not a dealbreaker but it is a daily irritation. While you’re planning, think about where the power unit column sits relative to your walk path, which side the vehicle enters from, and whether you’ll ever want to open a car door fully on the driver’s side. We’ve relocated more than one auto lift six inches because a homeowner couldn’t open the door of his Tahoe. Sketch the bay on graph paper, including the workbench and the air compressor, before anything gets anchored to the floor.

Installation, Anchoring, and Why DIY Goes Sideways

We install lifts across Iowa and we also fix a lot of self-installs. The common failures aren’t dramatic — they’re small things that add up. Columns out of plumb by a degree, which puts side load on the carriage rollers and wears them out early. Anchors torqued by feel instead of to spec. Shims stacked too high under a column base on an uneven slab. Cables tensioned unevenly, so the carriages don’t rise together and the equalization system fights itself for the next decade. Any one of those makes a good machine feel cheap.

Floor prep is where used units especially catch people. If the previous owner drilled anchors in a spot that doesn’t match your layout, you’re drilling fresh holes near old ones, and you need enough edge distance and undamaged concrete around each one. Slab thickness and reinforcement matter. We’ve walked into pole buildings where the slab was poured in two pours with a cold joint running right through the intended lift footprint. That’s not a place to anchor a two-post. A four-post is more forgiving because the load spreads across four bases and it doesn’t rely on anchors for stability the same way, which is one more reason storage-focused hobbyists often end up there. If you’re going to install it yourself, at minimum have someone qualified do a startup inspection before the first vehicle goes up. Maintenance, Inspection, and Long-Term Ownership

An auto lift is not a set-it-and-forget-it purchase, but the upkeep is genuinely light. Monthly, you look at the cables and chains, check that all locks engage, wipe the columns, and glance at the hydraulic fluid level. Annually, you lubricate the sheaves and slide blocks, check anchor torque, inspect the arm restraints, and have a real look at the cylinder and hoses. ALI recommends an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and in a commercial setting that’s not optional. In a home shop nobody’s citing you, but the failure modes don’t care whether you’re a business.

Cables are the wear item people ignore longest. On a four-post, the equalizer cables carry the load-balance job, and they live a hard life if the runways get out of level. On a two-post overhead model, the equalization cables run through sheaves at the top and they fray from the inside out where you can’t see it. We stock replacement cables for most major brands and we’d rather sell you a set at year twelve than deal with a failure at year fifteen. Budget a small annual amount for fluid, cables eventually, and the occasional lock spring or roller. Do that and a quality unit will outlast the vehicles you put on it.
