The hydraulic cylinder is designed for the same nominal life, but its consumable components — the rod seal, the wiper, the piston o-ring — wear on cycle count, not calendar time.
The seven-year mark is where dealerships start seeing weep at the cylinder rod, and the northeast Iowa service manager we worked with was seeing it exactly on schedule. Rotary SPOA10 uses a 45mm rod. Challenger LE10 uses a 45mm rod. Rotary SPO12 uses a 50mm rod. Older SPOA9 cylinders used a 40mm rod. Matching the seal kit to the rod diameter is not optional — a 40mm seal on a 45mm rod fails within days.
The rod wiper sits outboard of the seal and keeps contamination — brake dust, road salt, floor grime — out of the seal running surface. Wiper diameters match the rod. The piston o-ring lives inside the cylinder at the bottom of the rod and seals pressurized fluid from crossing between the two sides of the piston. Piston o-ring diameters match the cylinder bore, which for a two-post is typically 65, 70, or 80 millimeters depending on the lift’s capacity rating. All three parts ship as a matched kit from the manufacturer for around $140 to $220 depending on brand and cylinder size. Ordering by rod diameter and bore diameter, not by brand alone, is the surest way to get the right kit for a mixed dealership auto lift fleet.
Cylinder bore diameters across major two-post brands
Bore diameters in a two-post cylinder are surprisingly consistent across brands because the hydraulic math is the same regardless of who welded the column. A 10,000-pound rated two-post cylinder needs to develop about 5,000 pounds of lift force per cylinder in a dual-cylinder configuration, or 10,000 pounds in a single-cylinder pull configuration. At 3,000 PSI hydraulic pressure — the industry standard for lift powerpacks — a 5,000-pound force requires about 1.67 square inches of piston area, which is a bore diameter of about 45 to 50 millimeters.
Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger LE10, both 10,000-pound capacity, use 65-millimeter bore cylinders with a 45-millimeter rod. Rotary SPO12 at 12,000-pound capacity moves to a 70-millimeter bore and 50-millimeter rod. Rotary SPO15 at 15,000-pound capacity uses an 80-millimeter bore with a 55-millimeter rod. The rod-to-bore ratio holds around 0.7 across the line because the geometry gives a consistent extension-to-retraction pressure differential. A dealership running mixed brands can order seal kits by bore and rod diameter with confidence that a 65-45 kit fits a Rotary SPOA10 and a Challenger LE10 interchangeably. That interchangeability is one of the underappreciated advantages of certified auto lift brands over off-brand imports, where bore diameters are less standardized and rebuild kits are harder to source.
Rebuild versus replace: cost math at the seven-year mark
The rebuild-or-replace decision at year seven turns on the failure mode and the age of the rest of the cylinder. If the weep is at the rod seal and the cylinder body shows no scoring, no pitting, and no visible rust inside the rod when it is retracted, a seal kit and a two-hour rebuild are the right call. Parts cost $180. Labor at our shop rate is $220. Total per cylinder $400. A pair of cylinders on a two-post at $800 total, and the lift is good for another five to seven years before the next seal window.
If the cylinder body shows internal scoring — visible as a bright vertical line running the rod’s travel path — the seal will not hold even with a fresh kit. Scoring means the seal has worn a groove into the honed bore, and no seal will bridge that groove under pressure. That cylinder needs full replacement, currently $650 to $980 depending on brand. If both cylinders on the same auto lift are at seven years and one shows scoring, the other one is almost certainly going to show scoring within a year, and the honest math is to replace both simultaneously. Rebuild one, replace one is the wrong answer nine times out of ten because the labor cost of doing the second cylinder two months later exceeds the parts cost of doing it now.
Transmission jobs and cylinder duty cycle
Dealership transmission work is unusually hard on cylinders because the load stays on the lift for hours instead of minutes. A brake job cycles the lift up in thirty seconds, holds the load for maybe twenty minutes, and cycles down. A transmission drop cycles up, holds the load for three to five hours, and cycles down. During those hours, the cylinder is pressurized against the safety locks — the mechanical locks bear most of the load, but the hydraulic system stays under maintenance pressure and any slow leak past the seal shows itself.
The seven-year cylinder failure window we see in dealership fleets is skewed heavier toward lifts that see transmission work than toward lifts that see brake-and-tire work exclusively. If a dealership has one bay dedicated to transmission and drivetrain, the auto lift in that bay will need a seal-kit rebuild earlier than the lifts in the brake bays.
