A western Illinois farm shop dropping an auto lift into a machine shed with a decade-old concrete slab is the most common scenario we quote — and the most common one where the buyer forgets to check the slab spec until the columns are on the truck. This pre-purchase checklist is built for the farm-shop owner who wants to do his own engine oil-pan-gasket work on the pickup and the diesel one-ton, and who knows a lift is going to earn its keep. Concrete comes first, phase power comes second, and if you do not chase both down before you order, expect delays.

Slab Thickness: The Number That Ends Half of Auto Lift Sales

Every commercial two-post lift specifies a minimum concrete slab thickness — usually four inches for a ten-thousand-pound lift and four and a quarter inches or more for heavier capacities. That is the manufacturer minimum, meaning below that number the anchors will not develop the pull-out strength required to safely hold the columns under load. If your farm-shop slab is thinner than the minimum, you cannot safely install the lift on it without cutting and pouring a thicker pad.

The catch is that farm-shop slabs often are not what the owner remembers. A slab poured in the 1980s at four inches thick may have been repoured in a patch that is only three inches, or a corner may have settled and cracked. The only reliable way to know your slab is to core-drill a sample and measure it. Coring costs a couple hundred dollars per hole and takes an hour. It is the single best money you can spend before buying an auto lift for an older farm building.

Rebar, Fiber Mesh, and What Is Under the Surface

Slab thickness is one variable. Reinforcement is another. A four-inch slab poured over compacted gravel with rebar on twelve-inch centers is significantly stronger than a four-inch slab poured on ungraded dirt with no reinforcement. Fiber mesh in the concrete mix adds tensile strength but is not a substitute for proper steel reinforcement in a slab that will carry an anchored lift. The best slab for a farm-shop lift install has both.

You usually cannot see reinforcement without coring or scanning. A metal detector or a ground-penetrating radar sweep will tell you whether rebar is present and roughly where it sits. If you core to check thickness, save the core sample and look for the rebar cross-section. If none is visible in a slab that should have it, assume you are looking at plain concrete and plan accordingly. Older farm-shop slabs often have no reinforcement at all — that is fine for a tractor sitting on it, less fine for anchor bolts under lift load.

Assessing an Old Farm-Shop Slab Without Coring It

If you cannot afford to core the slab and want a quick field assessment, here is what to look for. First: cracks. A slab with hairline shrinkage cracks is normal. A slab with cracks that lift or step at the edges is a warning sign of poor sub-base or thin concrete. Second: spalling around any existing bolts or anchors from prior equipment. If old bolts have chipped the concrete around them, your new auto lift anchors will do the same or worse.

Third: sound. Tap the slab with a heavy steel hammer in several spots across the intended lift footprint. A solid slab returns a bright, sharp ring. A hollow-sounding tap indicates a void underneath — often from settled sub-base or from a repour that did not bond. Any of these three warning signs means you should core the slab or plan to cut and pour a fresh pad before installing the lift. Pre-Purchase Checklist Item by Item

Item one: measure the slab thickness — core if in doubt. Item two: verify or scan for rebar or wire mesh reinforcement. Item three: inspect for cracks, spalling, and hollow spots across the intended lift footprint. Item four: measure ceiling height at the lift location to the underside of the lowest joist or fixture. Item five: measure drive-thru width from the intended column locations to the nearest permanent obstruction. Item six: check for adequate 220-volt or higher electrical service at the shop panel.

Item seven: photograph the shop floor and take those photos with you to any auto lift quote conversation. Item eight: read the manufacturer install manual for the lift you are considering and cross-check every requirement against your building. Item nine: get an installer quote before you sign a lift purchase order — the install labor is a significant piece of the total, and knowing it upfront prevents budget surprises. Item ten: schedule the electrical drop separately so it is done before the lift freight arrives at your farm.

Concrete Options When the Slab Is Not Enough

If your slab fails the pre-purchase checklist, you have three options. Option one: cut and pour a new pad in the lift footprint only — typically an eight-by-fourteen-foot section, six inches thick, with rebar on twelve-inch centers. Cost lands in the mid four figures depending on local concrete pricing. Option two: pour a new pad over the top of the existing slab if ceiling height allows the loss of six inches of vertical clearance. Option three: pour a new slab across the entire bay.

Most farm-shop installs go with option one because it is the cheapest and most targeted. The cut-and-pour method requires a saw cut, removal of the old concrete, forming, rebar placement, and a proper pour with time to cure before the anchors go in. Total time from cut to install-ready is typically three to four weeks depending on cure temperature. Plan the lift order to arrive a month after the pour, and you will have a solid foundation for an auto lift that will last decades of farm-shop service.

Anchor Type, Torque, and Why a Farm-Shop Slab Behaves Differently

Standard wedge anchors work on healthy concrete of the right thickness. On older or marginal slabs, we often specify epoxy anchors instead — a chemical anchor that develops higher pull-out strength in less-than-ideal concrete. Epoxy anchors cost a few times more per anchor and take more time to install (the epoxy cures for anywhere from twenty minutes to a couple hours before you can torque), but they are the right call in a farm-shop slab of unknown history.

Torque matters. Every anchor has a manufacturer torque spec, and under-torqued anchors will pull loose under load; over-torqued anchors will crack the concrete around the bolt. Use a proper torque wrench, not a breaker bar and feel. If your installer cannot produce a torque wrench when he arrives to install your auto lift, that is a red flag. Ask about it during the quote. Your Twenty-Minute Pre-Purchase Walkthrough

Take twenty minutes with a tape measure, a hammer, and a notebook. Walk the intended lift footprint. Measure the slab area, note any cracks or spalls. Tap for hollow spots. Measure ceiling height at four corners of the footprint. Measure drive-thru width from column locations to the nearest obstruction on each side. Open the electrical panel and note the incoming voltage and available breaker capacity. Photograph everything. That twenty-minute walkthrough is all the data your installer needs to give you a real quote.
