Any auto lift with cable-and-sheave equalization is subject to the same fraying, stretch, and corrosion regardless of age, and shops doing oil pan gasket work put extra strain on the system because the vehicle sits raised at working height for longer stretches while a technician drains fluid, cleans mating surfaces, and torques a new gasket down in stages.

We’ve inspected cables on lifts barely two years old that showed broken strands from a car wash chemical drip or road salt tracked in on tires all winter. Pull back the boot or cover where the cable enters the carriage, look at the full visible run, and flex it slightly to check for stiffness or popped wires hiding under the outer layer. On a two-post lift especially, uneven wear between the front and rear cables is common because door swing and vehicle loading put more strain on one side. Myth: Annual Inspection Is Overkill for a Low-Volume Specialty Shop

Some independent European-marque shops run fewer lifts through fewer cycles per day than a high-volume quick lube, so the owner assumes cable wear is a non-issue for them. Cycle count matters, but so does dwell time at height, and specialty oil pan work on tight-clearance German engines often means the auto lift sits loaded at full height far longer per job than a basic oil change on a domestic truck. Long dwell time under load is its own kind of stress on cables even without a lot of up-and-down cycling.

What actually matters is strand integrity, diameter consistency, and whether the rust has pitted into the wire itself versus sitting on the surface. Any one of these on its own is worth a call.
