Myth: Any concrete floor can hold an auto lift
This is the myth that costs the most money after the fact. We’ve walked into European specialty shops with beautiful, clean concrete that looks brand new — and it’s four inches thick with no rebar, poured for foot traffic and rolling toolboxes, not for a two-post lift bearing the weight of a loaded 5-Series or a Porsche Cayenne on two columns. An auto lift concentrates enormous point-loads at four anchor bolts per column. If the slab wasn’t engineered for that, the anchors pull, the columns walk, and now you’ve got a safety problem instead of a productivity upgrade.
Before we ever quote installation, we ask for slab thickness, age, and whether there’s a control joint or expansion joint running through the intended footprint. A joint under a column is an automatic no-go without saw-cutting and repouring. We’ve had shops assume their five-year-old floor is fine, only to find out during the survey it was poured over old fill dirt with visible cracking already. Fixing that after the lift arrives means the truck sits, the installer sits, and the shop pays for both. A five-minute conversation about slab specs before ordering saves weeks of delay later.
Myth: Ceiling height only matters for two-post lifts
Shops doing oil changes and fluid service often assume a low-profile mid-rise or scissor lift sidesteps ceiling concerns entirely, since the vehicle barely leaves the ground. That’s only half true. You still need enough clearance for the tech to stand upright under the vehicle at full rise for a proper fluid service, plus room for any overhead reel, exhaust hose, or lighting fixture already mounted in that bay. We measure to the lowest hanging obstruction, not just the rafter line, because that’s what actually limits usable rise.
For a full two-post auto lift handling a European SUV with running boards or air suspension, you also need to check overhead clearance at full extension of the arms and the vehicle roofline combined — not just the columns. We’ve seen shops order equipment sized for their tallest vehicle without checking the door of the bay itself, then discover the lift columns clear the ceiling but the vehicle can’t drive in with the door open at the height they need. A proper site survey measures door height, ceiling height, and obstruction height as three separate numbers, every time.
Myth: Electrical and hydraulics are the installer’s problem, not the shop’s
Plenty of shop owners assume the lift installer shows up with everything needed to power the unit. We do bring the lift-specific components, but the shop is responsible for having the correct voltage and amperage run to the bay before we arrive. Most two-post and four-post units run on standard 220V single-phase, but higher-capacity commercial equipment and some Rotary and Challenger models spec differently, and if that circuit isn’t there on install day, we can’t safely energize the unit — full stop.
We also ask about compressed air availability if the lift or accessories need it, and whether there’s a floor drain nearby for fluid service work, since oil-change bays generate spills that need somewhere to go. None of this is exotic, but it’s exactly the kind of detail that gets skipped when a shop is excited about the new equipment and hasn’t thought through the utility side. We’d rather ask ten annoying questions on the phone than show up with a crew and a truck to a bay that isn’t ready.
Myth: A forklift and a pit aren’t necessary questions
Every install we schedule starts with two practical questions: do you have a forklift on site, and is there a pit anywhere in the bay. These sound basic, but they change the whole install plan. If there’s no forklift, we need to bring one or plan a different unloading approach for a crated lift that can weigh several thousand pounds. If there’s an old in-ground pit hiding under a floor patch from a previous shop’s equipment, that changes what we can anchor into and how.
We’ve shown up to Ames-area shops where the owner genuinely didn’t know there was an old in-ground lift pit under the floor until we found it during the survey walk. That’s not a knock on the shop — old buildings have history nobody wrote down. It’s exactly why we walk the space in person rather than just quoting off a floor plan email. Myth: One auto lift model fits every European fluid-service bay
Because European vehicles vary so much in wheelbase, weight distribution, and lift-point location, shops sometimes assume whatever auto lift a competitor installed down the street will work fine for them too. We size lifts around actual vehicle mix, not assumptions. A shop that’s mostly doing oil changes and fluid service on sedans and crossovers has very different lift-point and arm-reach needs than one working on long-wheelbase SUVs or lower sports cars with limited ground clearance.
This is where drive-on configurations and adjustable-arm two-post units diverge in usefulness. A drive-on lift is fast for straight fluid service but limits underside access; a two-post with the right arm reach handles both fluid work and heavier repairs later. We walk through the shop’s actual service mix during the survey — not a hypothetical one — before recommending a specific auto lift model, because the wrong choice here means either wasted capacity or a lift that can’t reach the points it needs to.
Myth: Site survey is optional if you already know what lift you want
We hear this a lot: “We already picked the model, just come install it.” We still do the survey. Knowing which auto lift you want and knowing whether your bay can actually accept it are two different questions, and skipping the second one is how shops end up ordering equipment that has to sit in a warehouse while the floor gets fixed, or worse, gets installed anyway and causes problems down the line.
Our survey covers slab condition, ceiling and door clearance, electrical and air availability, drainage, and access logistics like forklift and dock space — the same checklist every time, whether it’s a one-bay independent shop or a multi-bay dealership project. It typically takes less time than people expect, and it’s the single biggest factor in whether an install day goes smoothly or turns into a multi-visit headache. We’d rather spend thirty minutes on a video call or an in-person walk than schedule a truck for a bay that isn’t ready.
Myth: Installation prep ends once the lift is bolted down
Getting the columns anchored and the unit powered on is not the finish line. Every auto lift we install gets a full function check — full rise, full lowering, arm restraint engagement, safety lock testing at multiple heights — before we consider the job done. For a shop planning to run that lift daily for oil changes and fluid service, a rushed final check is exactly how small issues get missed until they become downtime later.
We also walk the shop’s technicians through proper use on day one: load positioning for the vehicles they actually service, how the safety locks behave, and what routine maintenance looks like between our scheduled visits. Shops that skip this step tend to call us within the first few months with questions that a fifteen-minute walkthrough would have already answered.
