Why Oil Change and Fluid Service Shops Need a Different Auto Lift

A shop that does thirty oil changes a day isn’t stressing a lift the same way a body shop or diagnostic bay does. The lift needs to go up and down fast, all day, without babying it, and the arms need to clear low-hanging skid plates and rock sliders on the overlanding builds that are common in that part of the state. We see a lot of lifted trucks and Jeeps with aftermarket bumpers along the Iowa-Missouri border, and standard arm configurations sometimes don’t reach the factory pinch points once someone’s added a heavy front bumper or rock rails.

Is the floor a slab you know the thickness of, or an unknown pour from decades ago? Do you have a pit, or is this a straight concrete floor install? Those three questions alone eliminate half the guesswork before we ever load a lift on the truck.

On this job the door height turned out to be the tighter constraint than the ceiling, which is common in older rural buildings along the border region. The owner wanted to raise a full-size SUV in the 5,000-pound range, and once the vehicle was up on the lift with the door open, we had to make sure there was still clearance to walk around it. We also asked whether he had a forklift on site or needed us to bring one, since a 10,000-lb capacity two-post arrives heavy and isn’t something you muscle into place by hand. Concrete readiness is the other piece — if the slab isn’t rated for anchoring a lift of that capacity, no amount of good equipment fixes that on install day.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Why We Won’t Skip This Step

We don’t do that with an auto lift job, because anchoring into cracked or underspec concrete is how lifts fail later — not on day one, but six months or a year down the road when nobody remembers the shortcut was taken. For this shop, the floor turned out to be a newer pour, thick enough for a standard two-post anchor pattern without extra work. That’s not always the case. We’ve walked into older shops along the border where the floor was original to a building from decades ago, and in those cases we recommend a concrete assessment or, in some cases, a poured pad specifically for the lift footprint. It costs more up front, but it’s cheaper than pulling anchors out of failed concrete and starting over. This is also where we talk through whether the lift needs to be bolted in a fixed spot or whether a mobile column setup makes more sense if the shop layout might change.

Matching Lift Capacity to a Mixed Fleet of Trucks and Overlanding Builds

If there’s no forklift on site, we bring one, but that changes the scheduling and sometimes the cost, so it’s better to know going in.

We also confirm lead time expectations early. Lift manufacturers don’t always have every model in stock, and freight from the manufacturer to our Ames location, then out to the install site, takes real time — sometimes a few weeks depending on the model and season. For a quick-service shop that’s trying to add capacity before a busy stretch, we’d rather tell you the honest timeline up front than promise something we can’t deliver.
