A used two-post unit with unknown service history might look like a deal, but if you don’t know the condition of the arm restraints or whether the safety-cam has ever been rebuilt, you’re gambling with differential work that happens every single week during season.

Most race teams we work with in central Iowa lean toward two-post for exactly this reason, the open access outweighs the slightly longer setup time of positioning arms correctly.

Four-post units earn their place too, especially for teams that need to store a second car mid-build or do alignment work between service sessions. The drive-on runways are faster for simple in-and-out jobs, and there’s no risk of picking up on the wrong lift point if a crew member is rushed. But for differential fluid service specifically, where you need clear access to the axle housing and a wide range of arm positions, two-post configurations win out most of the time. We help crews weigh this based on what actually happens in their bay week to week, not just the manufacturer spec sheet.

Arm Restraints: The Detail Everyone Skips Until It Fails

Arm restraints exist to keep the swing arms of a two-post auto lift from kicking out once the vehicle is raised. On paper it’s a simple mechanical pin or latch. In practice, we see restraints that have been bent, forced, or left disengaged because a tech was in a hurry and figured the car’s weight would keep the arms in place anyway. It won’t, not reliably, and not under the kind of repeated load cycles a racing schedule puts on equipment.

During diff service specifically, arms are often positioned at slightly unusual points to clear exhaust or suspension components, which is exactly when restraint failure is most likely if the pins are worn. We inspect restraint hardware on every service call, checking for elongated pin holes, cracked latch plates, and improper arm alignment that puts uneven stress on one side. If your crew swaps arm positions frequently for different chassis, that hardware wears faster than most owners expect, and it’s cheap to replace compared to the alternative.

Safety-Cam Engagement: What Good Looks Like

The safety-cam is the mechanical backup that catches the lift carriage if hydraulic pressure drops unexpectedly. On a healthy auto lift, you’ll hear and feel it engage in even increments as the lift rises, a series of solid clicks rather than a smooth glide. If your lift rises silently or the cam only catches on one side, that’s a sign the mechanism is worn, misaligned, or was installed incorrectly to begin with.

We test safety-cam engagement on every inspection by raising the lift partway and confirming both sides lock at the same increment before continuing. Uneven engagement puts the car at an angle nobody notices until they’re already underneath it, and during differential work with the rear end loaded, that angle changes how fluid drains and where stress concentrates on the mounting points.
