When a crew chief calls us asking about an auto lift for a race trailer bay or a shop that services a whole team’s stable of cars, the first question isn’t which brand looks best in the corner of the shop. It’s whether the floor underneath it can actually hold the thing. We’ve walked into more than one central Iowa or western Illinois shop where the team had already picked out a lift online before anyone checked slab thickness, and we had to have the harder conversation before install day instead of after. If you run a race team doing fast tire rotations and wheel changes between events, here’s the decision tree we actually use with teams from the Iowa-Illinois corridor, starting with the slab and working up to configuration.

Start With the Slab, Not the Lift

Every auto lift decision tree we run starts underground. A 10,000 lb or 12,000 lb two-post lift asymmetric enough for quick tire rotation still needs anchors sunk into concrete that’s thick enough and cured enough to hold the load under dynamic pull, not just static weight. For most two-post setups we want a minimum of 4 inches of solid, unpatched slab with no rebar mesh sitting right where the anchor bolts land, and no expansion joints crossing the footprint. Rebar itself isn’t a dealbreaker, but if the crew doesn’t know where it runs, we have to find out before anchor day, not after a bit hits steel three inches down.

Race trailers and pole-barn shops built fast for a season are the ones that trip teams up. We’ve had crews tell us the slab “looks fine” and then find out on inspection it’s a 3-inch pour over gravel with no rebar at all, poured for foot traffic and jack stands, not a loaded auto lift running up and down all weekend. If your slab is questionable, tell us before we quote — we’d rather spec a mobile column lift that spreads load across four independent columns than anchor a fixed two-post into concrete that can’t take it.

Budget Tier One: Mobile Columns for the Traveling Crew

If the team moves shop-to-shop or the home bay doubles as a trailer staging area, mobile column lifts solve the slab problem almost entirely. Each column sets its own footprint and spreads weight over a wider area than a bolted two-post, so thin or questionable concrete is less of a dealbreaker. Sets of two, four, or six columns lift entire race cars evenly for tire and wheel service without the anchoring headache of a permanent auto lift.

The tradeoff is speed per car. Mobile columns are excellent for wheel-off work across a whole grid of cars, but they’re slower to set up per vehicle than a dedicated two-post bay. For a team doing back-to-back rotations on one primary car during a race weekend, we usually steer toward a fixed lift in the home shop and reserve columns for trackside or trailer use where slab conditions are unknown or temporary.

Budget Tier Two: Two-Post for Speed on a Known Slab

Once we’ve confirmed the slab, a two-post asymmetric lift is the workhorse for fast wheel and tire changes. Arms swing clear, the car sits at a comfortable working height, and a good crew can be in and out of a full tire rotation in minutes once they’re used to the arm positions. This is the configuration we recommend most for a permanent team shop doing routine wheel service between events, provided the concrete checks out at the required thickness and the anchor pattern clears any rebar or joints.

We size these to the actual cars on the trailer, not a generic number. A lightweight open-wheel car doesn’t need the same lift as a stock-bodied sedan pulling double duty as a tow vehicle. Tell us the heaviest thing that’s ever going on the arms and we’ll spec accordingly, with room to grow if the team adds a car next season.

Budget Tier Three: Four-Post for Storage Between Events

Teams that store cars between race weekends often add a four-post drive-on lift alongside the two-post service bay. It’s not built for the same fast in-and-out tire work, but it holds a car up out of the way so the crew can work underneath a second car on the two-post without tripping over each other. Four-post units also tolerate slightly less-than-perfect concrete since the load spreads across four contact points rather than concentrating at two anchor points, which matters in older Iowa-Illinois corridor buildings with a mix of slab ages.

We’ve set these up in shared bays where one team stores a backup chassis on the four-post while the primary car cycles through service on the two-post below. It’s an efficient use of a limited footprint, and it keeps the auto lift schedule moving on a tight event calendar.

Where an In-Ground Lift Fits (and Where It Doesn’t)

Some longtime shops ask about in-ground lifts because they remember them from an old dealership bay. For a race team, we rarely recommend it. In-ground cylinders need a pit or a below-grade install, which is a bigger construction project than most trailer-adjacent shops want to take on, and it locks the lift’s location permanently. If a team is building a permanent home base and wants a clean floor with nothing overhead, it’s worth a conversation — but for most crews doing rotation-heavy wheel work, the flexibility of an above-ground auto lift wins out.

We’ve also fielded the opposite call — a shop with a stuck in-ground lift, car still on it, needing someone on-site fast with a forklift to help clear the bay. That’s the kind of emergency call that reminds teams why match-to-use matters before install, not after something’s stuck mid-air on race week.

Getting Anchors, Freight, and Install Day Right

Once the configuration is picked, logistics matter as much as the lift itself. We ask the same questions every time: is there a loading dock or does the crew have a forklift on-site to unload freight, is there a pit or clear ceiling height, and what’s the lead time before the next event. Race teams run tighter calendars than a typical shop, so we try to line up delivery and install around the schedule, not the other way around, and we’re upfront about equipment availability and realistic install windows rather than promising a date we can’t hit.

We also walk crews through anchor bolt spacing relative to their actual slab before the truck ever leaves, because a mismatch found on install day means a delay nobody wants during a season. Get the paperwork — slab age, thickness, any known rebar or joint locations — sorted with us ahead of time and the auto lift install itself usually takes a fraction of the time everyone worries about.

Matching Configuration to Crew Size and Turnaround Needs

The last branch of the decision tree is simple: how many hands are working the bay and how fast does a wheel change need to happen. A two-person crew doing quick rotations wants a two-post with arms positioned for fast, repeatable access, not a setup optimized for storage. A larger crew running multiple cars through one bay in a weekend benefits from mobile columns that let several people work independently around a car without waiting on a single fixed lift.

We also hear from teams who want service coverage built in — parts kept in stock, fast turnaround if a cylinder or equalizer cable fails mid-season, and inspections scheduled around the off-season rather than during a race stretch. That kind of ongoing support matters more for a race team on a tight calendar than for a shop that only uses its auto lift a few times a week, and it’s worth asking about when you’re comparing installers, not just comparing lift prices.
