Most shops calling us about an auto lift care about ceiling clearance and price. Race teams ask a different question first: how much time does this add or subtract from a transmission swap under a countdown clock. A crew chief thinking about between-race maintenance, or a shop that turns cars for a whole touring series, wants to know whether an overhead beam configuration will slow down a jack, a transmission cart, or a second technician working the same bay from the other side. That’s a legitimate concern, and it’s one we walk through on every quote for a performance or race shop.

The other difference is duty cycle. A daily-driver shop might run a lift a handful of times a day. A race team prepping for a weekend can cycle the same car up and down multiple times in an afternoon — pull it up, drop the pan, swap the unit, drop it, road test, back up again. That kind of use changes what we recommend on arm reach, cable versus overhead-cylinder configuration, and how much clearance the crew actually needs versus what looks good on paper. Overhead Configuration: What It Buys and What It Costs You

An overhead-style two post lift routes the hydraulic and cable runs through a beam above the vehicle instead of through the floor or a low crossmember. For a lot of shops this is the default because it doesn’t require trenching a slab or working around an existing pit. In a race bay, the overhead beam configuration means nothing at floor level to trip over, no cross-tube at driveline height, and clean access from either side when a two-man crew is working a transmission pull simultaneously.

The tradeoff is ceiling height. Overhead configurations need real headroom, and we’ve had to walk more than one Iowa shop back from an overhead auto lift once we measured their actual clear height under trusses, ductwork, or an existing mezzanine. If your race bay has a low ceiling, or you’re running a hoist or overhead crane in the same space, overhead beam clearance can conflict with what’s already up there. We measure this on-site before quoting anything, because a beam that clips a duct run six months after install is a problem nobody wants to solve after the fact.

Baseplate Configuration: The Practical Default for Tight Bays

A baseplate two post auto lift skips the overhead beam entirely and ties the columns together through the floor or with a low structural tie. For race shops in older Dubuque-area buildings — repurposed warehouses, older dealership service bays, converted ag buildings — this is often the more realistic option simply because the ceiling won’t take an overhead beam without modification. When we’re building a decision tree for a shop instead of a generic recommendation, we start with three questions: what’s your clear ceiling height, is your floor a pit or slab, and how do your techs actually approach the car during a transmission pull. If ceiling height is generous and there’s no low pit to work around, overhead configuration usually wins for race work because it keeps the floor completely open. If ceiling height is tight or there’s existing overhead equipment, baseplate becomes the practical answer even if it means planning cart access around the tie.

Budget sits downstream of those two questions, not ahead of them. We’ve seen teams try to shop purely on sticker price first and end up with an auto lift that technically fits their bay but fights their workflow every single weekend. A slightly higher-capacity or better-configured lift that saves ten minutes per transmission swap pays for itself fast when you’re doing that swap every week during a season. We’d rather walk a crew chief through the tradeoffs up front than have them call us in July asking why the lift they bought elsewhere doesn’t work for their bay.

Capacity and Arm Reach for Transmission-Heavy Work

Race cars aren’t always light. Between roll cages, ballast, and full exhaust and driveline hardware still attached during a lift, we see teams undersize capacity more often than they oversize it. We generally recommend building in headroom above the car’s actual curb weight rather than quoting to the exact number, especially for a lift that’s going to see frequent transmission work where the vehicle sits loaded up for extended periods.

Arm reach and swing matter just as much for this use case. A transmission crew needs arms that swing clear of the pan and crossmember without forcing an awkward reach, and that’s a spec question we go through model by model rather than assuming one configuration covers every chassis a team runs. If your team runs multiple chassis types across a season, we factor that into the auto lift recommendation too, since a lift that’s perfect for one car and a poor fit for another isn’t actually solving your problem.

Install Logistics: Forklifts, Pits, and Concrete Readiness

Every quote we send includes questions that sound basic but determine the whole install: do you have a forklift on site to unload freight, is there a pit anywhere near the install location, and is your concrete rated for the anchoring an auto lift of this capacity requires. Race shops built in older buildings sometimes have slab that’s thinner or older than it looks, and we won’t anchor a two post lift into concrete that isn’t going to hold up under repeated heavy cycling.

Lead time is the other piece teams underestimate.
