Symmetric arm lifts center the vehicle directly between the posts, which is great for even weight distribution and is the traditional choice for general service work. Asymmetric arm lifts shift the vehicle forward and off-center, opening up a walk-through space behind the posts. In a storage context, that walk-through space is often the deciding factor — it lets you slide a second car, a parts cart, or a rolling toolbox through the bay without lowering the stored vehicle. If your budget has room and your building has trucks, long-wheelbase wagons, or you need that walk-through clearance for a tight storage bay, asymmetric arms earn their keep. Matching Arm Style to a Season of Static Storage

A car sitting on an auto lift for weeks at a time behaves differently than one going up for a twenty-minute service. Long-term storage puts sustained load on the same contact points, and arm style affects how that load sits on the frame rail or pinch weld. Symmetric arms, because the vehicle is centered, tend to distribute static weight evenly across both sides — a real advantage for a car that isn’t moving for months. Symmetric arms also tend to be more forgiving with shorter-wheelbase classics where an asymmetric offset can actually push the vehicle’s center of gravity too far forward for comfortable loading.

If your shop’s storage business is mostly local collectors parking a car for the winter rather than a commercial fleet needing constant vehicle turnover, symmetric arms keep things simple. You get consistent lifting points, straightforward technician training, and lower long-term maintenance since the arm swing mechanism sees less asymmetric stress over years of use. It’s the configuration we recommend first when a shop owner tells us they just need reliable, no-drama storage capacity for eight to twelve vehicles a season.

Asymmetric Arms: When Walk-Through Space and Truck Capacity Win

Asymmetric arms make the most sense when your restoration shop regularly stores longer vehicles or when floor space is genuinely tight. The offset positioning creates a clear path behind the posts, which matters a lot in older northeast Iowa buildings with narrower bays that weren’t designed with modern lift spacing in mind. If you’re retrofitting an auto lift into a building built decades ago, asymmetric arms can solve a floor-plan problem that no amount of clever scheduling will fix.

They also shine when your storage mix skews toward pickups, vans, or longer classic wagons and sedans. The offset lifting position gives you better front-to-back balance on longer wheelbases, and the extra walk-through clearance lets staff move parts and tools through the bay while a vehicle sits raised. The tradeoff is cost and, in some buildings, a slightly more involved install because of how the posts need to be anchored relative to the vehicle’s resting position. Concrete, Power, and Install Logistics You Need Before You Order

Before any auto lift shows up at your shop, we ask the same questions every time: is there a pit or is this a surface mount, what’s the concrete thickness and cure date, and do you have 220-volt power already run to the bay. We’ve had installs delayed because a shop owner assumed the existing outlet would work, only to find out during a city inspection that a new 220 line had to go in first — and that inspection has to clear before the electrician can finish, which pushes the lift install back further. Plan that timeline before you order, not after the lift arrives.

Freight matters too. Depending on the brand and model, a two-post auto lift can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to arrive in Iowa from order date, and once it’s on-site we’re typically booking installs two to three weeks out. If your shop needs a forklift on-site for unloading, tell us that up front — it changes delivery coordination. Whether you land on symmetric or asymmetric arms, get the site prep and power situation locked down early so the equipment isn’t sitting crated in your parking lot waiting on an electrician.
