Why a Site Survey Comes Before the Auto Lift Order

Most farm shop owners near Marion are used to buying equipment the way they buy a tractor implement: pick it, pay for it, haul it home. An auto lift doesn’t work that way. Before we ever quote a specific model, we want to know the slab thickness, the rebar or mesh pattern if you have the pour records, and how old the concrete is. A four-post or two-post lift puts real point loads into that floor, and a shop slab poured for parking equipment isn’t always rated the same as a slab poured for a lift anchor pattern.

Ceiling Height and Door Clearance for a Two-Post or Four-Post Auto Lift

Restoration and metal work usually means trucks, tractors with cabs, or oversized project vehicles, and that changes the math on overhead clearance. We measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — trusses, lighting, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads if you have them — and compare that to the fully-raised height of the lift plus the tallest vehicle you plan to lift. A lot of pole barn shops have plenty of floor space but a lower eave line than people remember, and that’s where a two-post lift with a taller vehicle can run out of headroom fast.

Door clearance matters just as much, especially for delivery. A crated four-post lift is wide, heavy, and awkward, and if your shop door is a standard 10-foot opening, some crates won’t clear it without being broken down first. We ask about door width and height up front, and we ask if there’s a forklift on site or if we need to bring equipment to unload. This is the same question we ask every customer before a delivery truck shows up — no forklift on site usually means a different unloading plan and sometimes an extra hour on install day.

Electrical Service: What an Auto Lift Actually Needs

Farm shops often have electrical service that was sized for welders, compressors, and lighting, not for a hydraulic lift power unit. Most commercial two-post and four-post lifts run on 220 VAC, single phase, 60 Hz power, but the amperage draw and breaker sizing depend on the specific motor. We’ve had customers ask us directly for the motor specs so their electrician can size the circuit correctly before install day, and that’s exactly the right question to ask. If your panel is already maxed out with a welder and a compressor on the same subpanel, we’ll flag that during the site survey so you’re not discovering it the morning the installer arrives.

If your shop only has three-phase service, that’s fine too, but it changes which units we spec. Rural properties sometimes have older service entrances that were adequate for a small shop twenty years ago and aren’t anymore. We’d rather catch an undersized panel during the planning phase than have an installer standing next to a lift that can’t be powered up. This is a five-minute phone conversation that prevents a wasted install trip.

Floor Layout: Spacing an Auto Lift Around Your Existing Work

Restoration and metal work shops tend to have a fixed layout already — a welding bay, a sandblast cabinet, a paint booth, maybe a frame rack. Fitting an auto lift into that footprint means more than just finding open floor space. We look at swing clearance for the arms on a two-post lift, walk-around space on all four sides for a four-post, and whether you need room to roll a frame cart or engine hoist next to the lift while a vehicle is up in the air. A lift crammed into a corner technically fits, but it makes every job around it slower and less safe.

We also ask what else is planned for that bay long-term. If you’re going to add a second lift down the road, or if you eventually want a mobile column setup instead of a fixed lift, it’s worth spacing the first install with that in mind. A lot of the farm shop owners we work with start with one lift and add a second within a couple years once they see how much faster the work goes, so planning the layout with room to grow avoids a re-do later.

Anchoring, Pit Requirements, and What We Check On Site

Anchoring is where the site survey earns its keep. We check slab thickness with a probe or existing core data, confirm there’s no in-floor heat tubing or plumbing running through where the anchor pattern needs to go, and verify the concrete has cured long enough if it’s a newer pour. Fresh concrete needs real cure time before it can hold anchor bolts under load — we’ve had to push install dates because a customer poured a new pad and wanted the lift in before the concrete was ready.

We also ask directly whether there’s a pit anywhere near the install location, since older buildings sometimes have a forgotten inspection pit or drain trench under a floor that looks solid from above. And we confirm that the anchor pattern for the specific auto lift model matches what the manufacturer specifies for that slab thickness — some models need a thicker minimum pad than others, and that’s not something you want to find out after the crate is open. Doing this check ahead of time is faster and cheaper than moving a lift after it’s already anchored once.

Freight, Delivery, and Lead Time for a Rural Marion-Area Shop

Farm shops outside Marion sometimes deal with longer freight runs and gravel or dirt driveways that regular delivery trucks aren’t thrilled about. Once the site survey is done, picking the actual auto lift model gets a lot easier because we already know the constraints. Restoration and metal work shops usually want a two-post lift with good arm reach for trucks and older frames with irregular pickup points, or a four-post drive-on lift if you’re doing a lot of alignment, undercarriage sandblasting, or long-term project storage where a vehicle sits up in the air for weeks at a time. Weight capacity matters here too — farm trucks, tractors with loaders, and heavier restoration projects can push past what a standard consumer-grade lift is rated for.
