Getting an auto lift into a restoration and metal-work garage the right way is a sequencing problem long before it’s an equipment problem. Why Auto Lift Placement Has to Happen Before Concrete, Not After

Every restoration bay we’ve helped plan in the Urbandale area starts with the same mistake risk: someone pours a slab based on a rough guess of where the lift will sit, then calls us to figure out the rest. An auto lift needs a specific slab thickness and cure time, anchor bolt locations that avoid control joints, and clearance from side walls and posts that most general contractors don’t think about because they’re not lift people. We had a shop owner send us a full page of questions before pouring — post dimensions, minimum distance from front and side walls, total height clearance for LED fixtures he wanted mounted above, spacing between posts, and where to leave the 220V run — and that’s exactly the right instinct.

For restoration and metal work specifically, you’re not just parking a sedan for an oil change. You’re supporting a body on a rotisserie-adjacent workflow, running welders and plasma cutters near the posts, and sometimes leaving a car up on the auto lift for weeks at a time while you chase rust or fabricate panels. That changes your clearance math. We ask about ceiling height for a lift raised to full travel with a vehicle on it, whether you’re running an air line or welder drop near the columns, and whether the pour crew knows not to cut a control joint within a few inches of where anchors go. Get this locked before the concrete truck shows up, and the rest of the build-out follows in the right order.

Concrete Readiness Is the Gate Everything Else Waits On

We won’t schedule an auto lift install until the slab has cured to spec, and that single rule trips up more build-out timelines than anything else. A fresh pour needs real cure time before anchor bolts can be torqued to hold rated capacity, and rushing it means anchors that pull loose under load — which is a safety failure, not an inconvenience. If you’re sequencing a new restoration bay, pour early and let the lift install slide to the back of the schedule rather than the other way around.

We also ask up front about slab thickness and reinforcement, because older Urbandale shop buildings sometimes have thinner or patched sections that won’t meet minimum spec for a two-post or four-post unit rated for the vehicle weights restoration work involves. If your existing floor is questionable, we’ll say so before we quote anything, because installing an auto lift on a slab that can’t hold it is the single most common way we see shops end up with a lift that shifts, cracks the floor, or worse. Better to spend on a small targeted repour now than deal with a failure later with a car on the posts.

Electrical and Air Drops Belong on the Wiring Plan, Not an Afterthought

Almost every auto lift runs on 220V power, and if you’re building out a new bay, that circuit needs to be on the electrician’s plan before drywall goes up, not patched in after. We tell customers exactly where we need the outlet relative to the lift’s power unit — we carry different outlet adapters so the specific plug style is flexible, but the voltage and the location relative to the posts are not. Mark it on the electrical plan while the walls are still open studs.

For a restoration bay, you’re likely also running welding circuits, compressed air, and possibly ventilation for paint or grinding dust in the same footprint as the lift. We’ve seen build-outs where the electrician ran the lift’s 220V line directly behind where a welding cart needed to sit, forcing an awkward workaround. Walk your whole bay layout — lift posts, welding station, media blast cabinet, parts washer — as one plan, and loop us in on where the lift’s power and any control box need to land relative to all of it. It’s a lot cheaper to move a wire on paper than to reroute conduit in a finished wall.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance for Full-Travel Lifts

Restoration work often means leaving a vehicle raised on the auto lift for extended stretches while you work underneath at full height, so overhead clearance matters more here than in a quick-service bay. We measure from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — trusses, ductwork, sprinkler heads, and any lighting you plan to hang — and compare that against the lift’s maximum rise plus vehicle height. If you want slim LED fixtures mounted above the bay, as several shop owners have asked us for, that fixture height has to be part of the clearance math, not squeezed in after the lift is already anchored.

We also check door header height and drive-through path if the vehicle needs to roll in with any lift or trailer attached, which comes up more in restoration shops moving partially assembled cars. None of this is complicated, but it has to be measured against the specific lift model, not a generic spec sheet, because rise height varies across two-post, four-post, and mid-rise units enough to matter in a tight existing building.

Choosing Two-Post Versus Four-Post for Metal Work and Frame Access

For frame-off restoration and heavier metal work, we usually steer shop owners toward asymmetric two-post lifts for full underbody and rocker access, since the arms swing clear of the door sills and give you a straight shot at the frame rails. A four-post works better if you’re doing extended storage of a project vehicle between work sessions, or if you want a rolling jack bridge for spot lifting a car that’s already up. Neither is universally right — it depends on how you actually use the bay day to day.

We walk through vehicle weight, how long cars typically sit on the auto lift during a restoration job, and whether you need a drive-on four-post for alignment-adjacent work alongside the metal work. Shops that do both tire and alignment service and restoration in the same building often end up with one of each, split across bays, rather than trying to make a single lift do both jobs well.

Scheduling the Install Around the Rest of Your Build-Out

Lift install day should land near the end of your build-out sequence, after concrete has cured, power is roughed in and tested, and the bay is clear of other trades. We’ve had jobs get pushed because a customer paid a deposit and locked a quote, then the building schedule shifted and the lift needed to move from one building on the property to another entirely — which we can absolutely handle, but it changes freight and crew planning on our end, so tell us as early as you know.

We also ask if you have a forklift on site or a way to get the lift components off the truck, since that affects crew size and how we schedule the day. Give us a heads-up on any tight loading dock access or long carry distance across the property, and we’ll plan accordingly rather than showing up short-handed for a job that turned out to need extra hands.

Annual Inspections Keep a Restoration-Duty Auto Lift Safe Long-Term

Once your auto lift is in and running, the safety-first mindset doesn’t stop at install day. Restoration work is hard on lifts — long hold times, heavier project vehicles, and frequent raising and lowering while you chase a job — so annual inspection matters more here than in a shop doing quick oil changes. Our inspections cover lubrication, anchor bolt torque, and cable adjustment, plus a written record you can keep on file, which matters if you’re ever audited or asked to show maintenance history on the equipment.

We’ve inspected fleets as large as twenty lifts in a single visit for larger operations, but the same standard applies whether you own one auto lift or twenty — catch a worn cable or a loosening anchor before it becomes a failure, not after.
