Why Ceiling Height Comes Before Everything Else With an Auto Lift

Every conversation we have with a first-time buyer starts the same way, and it isn’t about brand or price. It’s ceiling height. We ask this before we even talk models because it eliminates half the guesswork. A two-post lift raising a full-size truck or an old body-on-frame project car to a comfortable working height needs real clearance above it, and in a lot of older east-central Iowa garages, the rafters or ductwork simply aren’t there. We’ve had customers tell us their ceiling is 18 feet in one breath and then discover a support beam cuts that down to 10 feet right where the lift needs to sit.

For restoration and metal work specifically, height matters even more than it does for basic oil changes, because you’re often working underneath a raised vehicle for hours at a time with the doors open, welding gear staged, and a rolling cart nearby. A shorter ceiling doesn’t automatically rule out an auto lift, but it does change which model makes sense. Low-rise and mid-rise lifts, along with certain two-post configurations, are built for exactly this kind of constraint. Door Swing and Garage Door Clearance

On a two-post lift, the arms swing out to cradle the vehicle, and on many trucks and older cars, the doors need to open fully so you can get in and out, load parts, or access door jambs and rocker panels during bodywork. If your bay is tight, or if you’re planning to run two vehicles side by side, that arm and door clearance adds up fast.

A four-post lift can simplify this since it’s drive-on and doesn’t require positioning arms under pinch points, which some restoration guys prefer specifically because it’s faster to load and unload during a long-term project. Two-Post Versus Four-Post for Metal Work

A four-post lift, on the other hand, is often better if you’re using the lift for long-term storage between work sessions, or if you want to roll a second vehicle underneath while the first sits raised. Concrete and Floor Readiness Before Installation

Before we schedule any installation, we ask about your slab. Thickness, age, and condition of the concrete all affect anchoring, and a lift that’s rated for heavy trucks and restoration projects puts real stress on those anchor points every time it’s cycled. Cracked, thin, or old concrete can mean added prep work, and it’s much better to know that before delivery day than after our crew shows up with a lift on the truck.

We also ask if there’s a pit already in the bay, whether there’s a forklift on site for unloading, and what the lead time looks like on your end for scheduling. These logistics questions feel basic, but they’re the difference between a one-day install and a multi-day delay. For heavier restoration-capacity lifts, we sometimes need to coordinate around drying time if any grouting is required, and we’ll tell you upfront exactly how long you’ll need to stay off the equipment before it’s ready for full use.

Weight Capacity for the Vehicles You Actually Own

It’s tempting to buy based on your current daily driver, but restoration buyers should think about every vehicle that might end up on the lift over the years, not just the one project sitting in the garage today. A vintage truck missing its bed and cab corners weighs differently than it did new, and once you start stacking parts, an engine hoist, or a partial frame on the lift arms, capacity margins matter more than most people plan for.

We generally recommend buying more capacity than your current project needs, because the next vehicle that comes through the garage is rarely lighter than the last one. This is also where brand and configuration intersect with your ceiling and door swing decisions, since higher-capacity two-post models sometimes require more overhead clearance and a wider stance between posts. Lighting, Power, and Working Around the Lift

Metal work and restoration projects run long hours, often into the evening, and that means your electrical setup needs to support both the lift itself and the tools you’ll be running underneath it. We ask about existing power in the bay early in the process, including which side outlets and any 220V service sit on, because running new circuits after installation is far more disruptive than planning for it ahead of time.

Lighting matters just as much. A raised vehicle casts long shadows exactly where you need visibility most, on the underside near suspension mounts and frame rails. We’ve walked plenty of garages where the ceiling fixtures were positioned for a parked car, not a lift, and customers ended up adding work lights or repositioning fixtures after the fact. Planning this alongside your door swing and clearance measurements saves a second round of changes once the auto lift is already in place and in daily use.
