Why Restoration Shops Think Differently About an Auto Lift

Most shops buying an auto lift are thinking about oil changes and tire rotations. A restoration or off-road fabrication shop is thinking about something else entirely: how long a vehicle sits on that lift, and how much abuse the arms and cylinders take from grinding, welding sparks, cutting torches, and dragging out rusted frame sections. That changes the calculus. A lift that’s fine for a quick-lube bay might not hold up to a truck sitting suspended for three weeks while someone replaces frame rails.

For the Davenport build, the underlift clearance mattered as much as capacity. He needed enough room to fit lifted rigs and full-size frames without the crossmember or diff hanging up on the arms, and he wanted a two-post drive-on setup with structural components rated for the long haul, not a bargain unit that would need arm bushings replaced every year. The 20-Year Math: Purchase Is Only the Starting Line

When people ask us about total cost of ownership on an auto lift, the purchase price is maybe a third of the real number. Over twenty years you’re looking at annual inspections, arm and cylinder wear parts, cable or hydraulic hose replacement, occasional structural repair if the equipment gets abused, and eventually a full re-cylinder or overhaul. None of that is unusual — it’s just rarely priced out up front, so shop owners get surprised later.

Concrete, Freight, and the Install Details Nobody Budgets For

Every restoration builder we talk to underestimates install logistics the first time around. Slab thickness matters — we’ve had customers pouring 5-inch slabs with rebar and foam insulation underneath specifically to handle a 9,000 lb two-post, and post placement has to be planned before the concrete is cut, not after. Get the distance from the front wall and outside wall wrong and you’re stuck compensating for the rest of the lift’s life.

Freight is the other piece. We ask straightforward questions before scheduling: is there a forklift on site, is the shop a pit or slab install, and is the concrete actually cured and ready. A builder without a forklift on site needs a different delivery plan than one with a dock and a Bobcat. We’ve seen installs get delayed weeks because a customer assumed the freight company would unload and place the lift — that’s not how it works, and figuring it out on install day costs everyone time. Getting these logistics right the first time is part of what keeps the 20-year cost down, because a rushed or improvised install is exactly what causes structural problems five years later.

Two-Post Drive-On vs. Four-Post for Metal Work

For pure restoration and fabrication work, we usually steer builders toward a two-post drive-on lift when full underbody access is the priority — grinding, undercoating, exhaust and frame work all go faster with nothing under the vehicle. But if a shop is also storing project vehicles long-term, or wants a stable platform to leave a frame sitting on for weeks at a time without tying up floor space, a four-post drive-on setup earns its keep. It’s slower to get full underbody access, but it’s rock-solid for long-duration projects and doubles as storage between builds.

The Davenport shop ended up going two-post because his projects move through faster and he needed the open access for cutting and welding on lifted trucks with aftermarket suspension. We see this decision go both ways depending on how a shop actually works, not how it looks on a spec sheet. Cylinders, Cables, and the Parts That Actually Wear Out

An auto lift used for grinding, welding, and dragging frame sections around takes more abuse on the moving parts than a typical service bay lift. Hydraulic cylinders take the brunt of it — seals dry out, debris gets into the bore, and over years you’ll see slow drift or uneven lift on one side. Cables on a two-post stretch and fray faster when the lift is cycled heavily during long fabrication days. Neither of these is a reason to avoid an auto lift for this kind of work — it’s just the maintenance reality, and it’s why we stock cylinder reseal kits and cable replacements rather than telling people to replace the whole unit.

Over a 20-year ownership window, budgeting for a cylinder rebuild or reseal once, maybe twice, and a cable swap every several years is realistic and far cheaper than a full lift replacement. Shops that run heavy welding and grinding work should also expect to inspect arm restraints and locks more frequently, since debris and spark can affect the latching mechanisms faster than in a clean tire shop. None of this shows up in the sticker price, but it’s the actual cost of keeping a lift running two decades in a hard-use restoration bay.

Annual Inspections Are Cheaper Than the Alternative

We’ve said it before to shop owners and we’ll say it again here: annual inspection is the cheapest insurance you’ll ever buy for an auto lift. A trained tech catches worn arm pins, cracked welds, cable fray, and slow cylinder drift long before any of it becomes a safety issue or a five-figure repair. For restoration shops running vehicles up on the lift for weeks at a time under structural load, that inspection matters even more than in a standard service bay.
