Neither style eliminates the cable question. Four-post lifts commonly use a cable-driven rolling jack system or cable-actuated locks depending on the model, so you still need to inspect that hardware before buying. If your restoration work involves pulling the vehicle up on the lift and leaving it there for weeks at a time while you source patch panels, we generally lean toward recommending a lift with a proven cable maintenance history over a cheaper unit with unknown history, even if the second one looks cleaner in photos.
Forklift, Concrete, and Delivery Logistics for a Used Lift
Buying used doesn’t mean the install logistics disappear. We ask every customer, hobbyist or commercial, the same basic questions before we even quote a job: is there a forklift or skid loader on site to help unload, what’s the concrete thickness and age where the lift will sit, and is there enough ceiling clearance for a two-post or four-post auto lift with its posts fully extended. A used lift bought from a private seller two counties over still has to get from their shop floor to yours, and that’s often the part hobbyist buyers underestimate.

Weeping hydraulic fluid pooling under the power unit is a sign the lift hasn’t been serviced in a while, which tells you the cables probably haven’t been either.
Also check the structural components: the posts for any bowing, the arm restraint pins for wear, and the locking mechanism for smooth engagement on both sides. If any structural part looks modified, welded, or repaired outside of factory-approved parts, walk away or at minimum get it inspected by a certified technician before you put a project car up on it.
