A daily-driver oil change bay lifts a car, does the job in twenty minutes, and sets it back down. Restoration and metal work is nothing like that. A body or frame gets lifted once and left up for days, sometimes weeks, while panels get cut, welded, and fitted. A car sitting on an auto lift for a long stretch is a different stress case than one going up and down all day. Sometimes it’s a legitimately good buy: a shop closing down, a lift that was well maintained, cables and cylinders in decent shape. We’ve helped customers move used four-post lifts from one building to another, tear them down, forklift them next door, and set them back up — that’s a real, cost-effective path when the lift itself is sound.

Where it gets risky is when nobody can verify the lift’s history. We’ve fielded calls from owners with a used two-post stuck at the top, unable to unlock, afraid to touch the cables with a vehicle still hanging in the air — and by the time that call comes in, the cheap option has already cost more in downtime and risk than a new unit would have. For restoration work specifically, where a body might sit up top for weeks, we push customers to get any used auto lift fully inspected before it ever holds a vehicle. Check the cylinder for seepage, check cable wear, check that the safety locks actually engage. If a seller can’t answer basic maintenance questions, treat the price as a discount on unknown risk, not a bargain.

New Auto Lift Options: What You’re Really Paying For

A new auto lift costs more up front, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What that premium buys is a documented, unused frame, cylinder, and cable system, plus a warranty that actually means something if a part fails in year one. For a restoration builder planning to keep a car suspended for extended fabrication work, that’s not a small thing — it’s the difference between trusting the equipment and second-guessing it every time you walk into the shop.

We also see plenty of confusion around lift sourcing that’s worth clearing up. A lot of lifts on the market, regardless of the name printed on the column, trace back to a handful of overseas manufacturing plants, sometimes the same factory building units for multiple brands with small design tweaks. Our rule of thumb: size the auto lift for the heaviest realistic load it’ll ever see in your shop, not the average one. If you’re doing chassis swaps, engine-out rebuilds, or full metal replacement on trucks and larger vehicles, a lift rated right at your typical vehicle weight leaves no margin once you add a stand, a jig, or extra components still hanging on the frame. We’d rather quote you a size up than have you call us back in a year needing a bigger unit installed around a project already mid-build.

Power, Pit, and Building Logistics Before You Buy Either Way

Before we quote anyone a used or new auto lift, we ask the same logistics questions every time: what’s your ceiling height, is there a pit or is this a surface mount, do you have a forklift on site for unloading, and what’s your power situation. Most two-post and four-post commercial lifts we install run on 220V single-phase, and a lot of shops converting a shed or pole barn to restoration work haven’t run that circuit yet. That’s a conversation to have before delivery day, not after the truck shows up.

Concrete matters just as much. A used lift moved from a proper shop floor into a machine shed with unknown slab thickness needs the pad checked before installation, full stop. We won’t set anchors into concrete we haven’t verified can hold the load, and any reputable installer should tell you the same. This is also where a new auto lift purchase has an edge — most new units come with full anchor specs and installation documentation, where a used lift bought sight-unseen off a listing often comes with none of that paperwork at all.

Service, Parts Availability, and the Real Cost of Downtime

A restoration shop can’t afford a lift going down mid-project with a vehicle stuck in the air. Parts availability is where the used-versus-new decision quietly gets decided for a lot of shops. New Rotary and Challenger units have a straightforward parts pipeline — cables, cylinders, seals, and control components are stocked and identifiable by model number. A used lift, especially an older or off-brand unit, can mean weeks tracking down a part, or discovering the model was discontinued years ago with no support left at all.

If a restoration builder in western Illinois or anywhere across our service area called us tomorrow with this same used-versus-new question, we’d start with three questions: how long will vehicles realistically sit on the lift, what’s the heaviest configuration you’ll ever load onto it, and what’s your timeline. A shop that needs equipment running next week and can’t wait on freight for a new unit might reasonably lean used, provided we can inspect it first. A shop planning multi-week builds with fabricated fixtures and heavier-than-stock loads should lean new, full stop, because the risk of an undocumented used lift under sustained load isn’t worth the savings.

There’s no universal right answer here — that’s the honest truth of it. What matters is being clear-eyed about how the lift will actually be used, not just what it costs on day one.
