Most shops call us already knowing they want a lift, but far fewer have measured how a unit will actually sit in the bay once it’s in daily use. RVs and trailers are not cars — a 34-foot travel trailer or a dual-axle enclosed trailer needs runway length in front of and behind the lift, not just overhead clearance. We always ask about door height, drive-in angle, and whether the bay is shared with another vehicle bay, because a auto lift that’s technically rated for the weight can still be the wrong shape for the space.

For the Waterloo shop, the existing bay had a support column about two-thirds of the way back, which ruled out a few configurations before we even talked models. That’s what this shop ended up choosing, largely because their bay had the runway length to support it and their techs wanted a flat, stable working surface for heavier dual-axle trailers.

Mobile columns are the better call when a shop services rigs of wildly different lengths and wheelbases, or when floor space is tighter and a fixed platform footprint doesn’t work. We’ve set up both for Iowa shops and the honest answer is it comes down to what rolls through your door most often. If you’re mostly doing brake service and rotor swaps on trailers and smaller RVs, a fixed platform auto lift usually wins on speed — no columns to position, no rolling into place, just drive on and go. If your customer base swings from pop-up campers to Class A motorhomes, columns flex better.

Concrete and Power Requirements Before Install Day

Every install conversation eventually gets to concrete thickness, and RV shops need to take this seriously because the loads are heavier and more concentrated than typical car lift installs. We ask for slab thickness and age up front, and if a shop isn’t sure, we walk them through how to check before we schedule. A platform-style auto lift rated for heavier trailers and RVs puts real point loads on the anchors, and skipping this step is the fastest way to end up with a lift that isn’t rated for what it’s actually holding.

Power unit placement is another detail people underestimate. On multi-post platforms, the power unit generally needs to sit on one of the posts so the cables and hoses can physically reach — it’s not just an aesthetic choice, there’s a real mechanical limit to hose length. We also talk through where the control panel goes, since techs need to see the vehicle while raising it, not just the readout. Getting the electrical and air lines run before delivery, rather than after, keeps the install on schedule instead of turning into a multi-day project waiting on a licensed electrician.

Freight, Forklifts, and What Delivery Day Actually Looks Like

Almost every RV and trailer shop asks the same questions before delivery: do we need a forklift on site, is there a dock, how much lead time should we plan for. The honest answer is that heavier platform lifts ship on pallets or crates that need mechanical handling, so if a shop doesn’t have a forklift, we coordinate around that ahead of time rather than showing up and improvising. Lead times on platform-style auto lift equipment can run a week or more depending on manufacturer stock, so we tell shops to order before they’re desperate, not after their old setup fails.

It did, mostly because the drive-on configuration meant no time spent positioning slings or adapters on trailer frames that weren’t built with car-style lift points in mind.

What they’d change, looking back, was mostly about placement of the tool cart and where the second bay’s traffic crossed their new lift zone — small workflow tweaks, not equipment regrets. That’s typical of what we hear from shops a few months into owning their first heavy-duty auto lift: the equipment does what it’s rated to do, and the learning curve is entirely about how the crew works around it. Warranty, Service, and Keeping the Lift Running Long-Term

Once an auto lift is in daily use for brake service, wear parts and fluid checks become part of the routine, and shops want to know what’s covered and for how long.
