An auto lift changes everything for an RV and trailer service shop, but only if you get the build-out sequencing right before the truck with the lift ever shows up. We walked a Davenport-area RV and trailer shop through their first full year of ownership, from the day we poured out a plan on paper to the afternoon their tech did a CV axle and half-shaft job on a customer’s tow vehicle without crawling under it on a creeper. Why an RV and Trailer Shop Even Needs an Auto Lift

The owner had been running the shop out of a pole building for a couple years, doing hitch installs and light trailer repair on jack stands. Once RV and tow-vehicle work started coming in, the math stopped working. CV axle and half-shaft jobs, brake work on dual-axle trailers, and undercarriage inspections on Class C motorhomes all take a lot longer when you’re on your back with a floor jack and a stack of stands. An auto lift was the difference between billing two hours and billing five.

We hear this from a lot of shops that start general and grow into RV and trailer work. The tipping point is usually a job that takes too long to be profitable — in this case it was a half-shaft swap on a heavy tow rig that ate half a day it should have taken two hours. Once that happens, owners start calling around asking what an auto lift actually costs to own, not just to buy, and whether their building can even handle one. That’s the right question to start with, because the equipment is only half the project.

Build-Out Sequencing: What We Told Them Before Ordering Anything

This is where most first-time buyers get ahead of themselves. They pick a lift model off a website, then figure out the building around it. We did it backwards on purpose. First we confirmed slab thickness and rebar in the section of floor where the lift would sit, because a lift landing on the wrong pad can crack concrete or, worse, fail an anchor pull test later. Then we mapped ceiling height against the tallest unit they’d realistically service — Class C roofline plus lift travel, not just a passenger car.

Only after that did we talk lift type. For their mix of tow vehicles and light trailers, a four-post drive-on setup made more sense than a two-post, mainly because dual-axle trailers and long-wheelbase trucks are easier to position without worrying about pinch points or frame contact. We also sequenced electrical last — running a dedicated circuit to the lift location before the slab work, not after, saved them a second trip from their electrician. Sequencing the building around the auto lift instead of the other way around is the single biggest thing that keeps first-year owners from paying for do-overs.

Delivery Day: Forklifts, Pits, and Concrete Readiness

By the time delivery day came, they already knew the answers to the questions we ask every customer: do you have a forklift on site, is there a pit involved, and is the concrete cured and rated for the load. They had a forklift borrowed from a neighboring business, no pit since this was a surface-mounted four-post, and concrete that had cured well past the minimum window. That prep work is why their install went in a single day instead of stretching into a second trip.

We’ve shown up to sites where none of that was sorted out, and it turns a straightforward install into a scheduling problem for everyone. Freight timing matters too — a four-post unit ships heavy, and if there’s no way to get it off the truck, the driver either waits on the clock or the delivery gets rescheduled. For any shop bringing in their first auto lift, get the forklift and concrete questions answered before you set an install date, not during the week of it.

The First Real Job: CV Axle and Half-Shaft Work on a Tow Vehicle

Their first real test came about three weeks after training when a regular customer’s three-quarter-ton tow rig came in with a failing CV axle on the front half-shaft. On jack stands, that job means pulling the wheel, dropping the sway bar end link, working blind at an angle, and hoping nothing shifts. On the four-post, the tech drove it up, locked the lift at a comfortable working height, and had full clean access to the half-shaft and both CV joints without fighting gravity or visibility.

What used to be a job the shop quoted conservatively because of the labor risk became a job they could quote with confidence. The tech told us afterward that the biggest change wasn’t speed, it was accuracy — being able to see the boot, the joint, and the mounting points at eye level meant less guessing about what actually needed replacing. That’s the kind of quiet payoff that doesn’t show up on a spec sheet but shows up in the shop’s bottom line every time a similar job comes through the door.

What We’d Tell a Shop Buying Their First Auto Lift Today

If we were advising this same shop again from scratch, we’d tell them the same three things. First, size for your heaviest realistic vehicle plus a margin, not your average job — RV and trailer work skews heavy and long, and an underrated lift becomes a liability fast. Second, get your building questions answered early: slab, ceiling clearance, electrical, and forklift access at delivery. Third, don’t treat the lift as a one-time purchase and forget about it; plan for annual inspection from day one.

We also tell shops to think about arm configuration and drive-on ramps specifically for trailers with unusual axle spacing, since a standard arm setup built for passenger cars can be awkward on some trailer chassis. None of this is complicated, but it’s easy to skip when you’re excited to get the lift running. The shops that do best in year one are the ones that treated the auto lift as part of a building plan, not a standalone tool dropped into an empty bay.

Service Plans and Why the First-Year Inspection Matters

Part of what we set this shop up with was a service plan that guarantees lift repair response within 48 hours of a call, with annual inspection built in. For a shop that depends on the lift daily, downtime isn’t just inconvenient, it’s lost revenue on every job that would’ve gone up on it that day. Their plan also included parts and labor coverage so a broken chain, a hydraulic seal, or a worn cable doesn’t turn into a surprise bill on top of the downtime.

The annual inspection caught a minor cable wear issue in month ten that wouldn’t have failed anything yet, but would have been a bigger repair if it had gone another six months unnoticed. That’s the value of a structured inspection instead of waiting for something to break. Any shop running an auto lift daily, especially with the heavier loads RV and trailer work brings, should treat that annual check as non-negotiable rather than optional.

One Year Later: What Actually Changed for the Shop

A year in, the owner told us the auto lift changed which jobs they say yes to. Before, undercarriage-heavy work like half-shaft and CV axle replacement, brake jobs on tandem-axle trailers, and full inspections on motorhomes got quoted high or turned away because of the labor risk on the floor. Now those are some of their most profitable jobs because the lift cuts the time and the physical strain dramatically.

They’ve also picked up repeat customers specifically because word got around that they can handle heavier tow vehicles and trailers properly, not just hitch installs.
