An auto lift is only as trustworthy as the seals inside its cylinder, and that’s a lesson a northeast Iowa overland builder learned the hard way this fall. He runs a small shop outside Decorah building out truck-based rigs for winter storage between builds — roof tents off, rigs parked nose-up on a lift for months at a time so he can work underneath without crawling on frozen concrete. When he called us, his two-post unit was creeping down overnight, just an inch or two, but enough that a loaded rig sitting on it for a season worried him. That creep almost always traces back to cylinder seals, and it’s exactly the kind of thing we catch before it becomes a dropped vehicle instead of a phone call.

What Seasonal Storage Actually Does to an Auto Lift

Most people think of a lift as something that works hard during the season and rests during storage. In reality, storage is often harder on the hydraulic system than daily use. When a vehicle sits raised for weeks or months, the cylinder holds constant pressure against seals that were designed to cycle up and down regularly, not sit static under load. Rubber and polyurethane seals can take a compression set in that position, and any tiny leak that would be invisible during normal daily cycling becomes obvious after 60 or 90 days of a rig slowly settling.

This is especially true in northeast Iowa garages that see big temperature swings between an unheated bay and a heated one, or a shop that only runs the furnace part-time overnight. Hydraulic fluid thickens in the cold, seals contract slightly, and a seal that was marginal in September can start seeping by January. We see it every year with builders who park a project vehicle on an auto lift for the winter and don’t check it again until spring — by then the rig has dropped enough to need re-leveling, and sometimes enough to need a full cylinder rebuild instead of a simple reseal.

The Northeast Iowa Case: What We Found on Inspection

When we got out to the Decorah-area shop, the two-post lift was a Rotary unit that had been in service about eight years — plenty of life left in the structure, but the original cylinder seals had never been touched. We pulled the cylinder, and the primary seal showed the kind of glazing you get from years of heat cycling combined with sitting under static load. It wasn’t catastrophic. It was exactly the slow, honest wear you’d expect, and it was letting fluid bypass just enough to cause the overnight creep he’d noticed.

We rebuilt the cylinder with a full seal kit rather than just swapping the one worn piece, because once one seal in a cylinder shows that kind of wear, the others aren’t far behind — and a callback for a second leak two months later costs everyone more time than doing it right the first time. We also checked the equalizer cable tension while we had the lift apart, since a cylinder rebuild is the easiest time to catch a cable that’s stretched. He was back to storing his rig with confidence within the same visit.

Cylinder Seals vs. Full Rebuild: Knowing the Difference

Not every drip means a full rebuild, and we’d rather tell a customer the truth than sell them more than they need. A seal kit replaces the wear items — the primary seal, the wiper, the O-rings — inside a cylinder barrel that’s otherwise straight and unscored. That’s the right call when a lift has moderate hours, no visible scoring on the rod, and the leak is slow and recent. A full cylinder rebuild or replacement makes more sense when the barrel itself is pitted or scored, when the rod has visible wear grooves, or when a lift has been run low on fluid for a long stretch and metal-on-metal contact has already started.

For an auto lift going into seasonal storage specifically, we lean toward being conservative. If a customer is going to park a vehicle on it and not touch it again for four or five months, we’d rather replace a seal kit that’s borderline than have them call us in February from an unheated garage two hours away. Parts availability matters here too — we keep seal kits in stock for the models we sell and install, and we can usually tell over the phone with a model number whether it’s a straightforward reseal or something that needs the cylinder pulled and inspected in person.

Pit vs. Surface-Mounted Lifts and Storage Risk

Where the auto lift sits changes the storage math too. A surface-mounted two-post or four-post lift in an unheated pole building is exposed to the same freeze-thaw cycling as everything else in the bay, and condensation inside the cylinder housing over a long storage period is a real contributor to seal wear over time. A lift set in a pit has more consistent below-grade temperature but comes with its own concern — moisture intrusion around the pit walls, especially in older installations without proper drainage, which can accelerate corrosion on hardware even if the cylinder itself is protected.

We ask about this on every seasonal storage call: is there a pit, is the bay heated even partially, and how long will the vehicle actually sit. Those three answers tell us more about seal risk than the age of the lift alone. A newer lift in a damp, unheated pit environment can develop problems faster than an older lift in a dry, semi-heated bay. If you’re not sure which category your shop falls into, that’s a five-minute phone conversation, not a guessing game.

What Overland and Off-Road Builders Should Watch For

Off-road and overland builds carry different weight distribution than a typical daily driver — winches, bumpers, roof racks, and armor add mass low and forward, and a lot of that weight sits on the frame contact points differently than stock. When that kind of build sits on an auto lift for months, uneven loading can put more sustained pressure on one cylinder than the other, which is part of why the northeast Iowa shop we worked with saw creep instead of a clean, even drop. We always recommend rechecking adapter placement and pad contact points before a long storage stretch begins, not just when the vehicle first goes up.

If you’re storing a heavily modified rig for the season, it’s worth a quick visual check every few weeks even if you don’t plan to move the vehicle — look at fluid level in the reservoir, check for any new drip on the shop floor under the cylinder, and listen for a compressor or pump cycling that wasn’s cycling before. Small changes early are cheap to fix. A rig that’s dropped six inches by the time you notice is a different, more expensive conversation.
