Step One: What’s Your Actual Ceiling Height?
Every decision tree for an auto lift starts here, and almost every shop owner guesses wrong the first time. Measure from the concrete slab to the lowest point of your ceiling — not the peak of a pole barn truss, the lowest obstruction, which is usually a purlin, a light fixture, or a header beam. We had a customer with two short-bed trucks he wanted stored one over the other, and he needed 75 inches of clearance just to get the bottom truck underneath the platform. That number drives everything else in this decision tree.
If you’re under 12 feet of clear ceiling, a full-rise four-post storage lift with a vehicle parked on top is probably off the table — you’ll run out of headroom before the platform even reaches a useful working height. In that case a low-rise mid-rise or a portable scissor lift for seasonal rotation makes more sense than a permanent auto lift. If you’ve got 14 feet or more, you have real options, including four-post lifts with enough rise to store a second vehicle underneath with legitimate clearance to open doors and hoods. Don’t skip this step to go look at brochures — the ceiling number eliminates half the catalog before you ever talk price.
Step Two: Door Swing and Walk-Around Clearance
Once ceiling height clears a configuration, door swing decides whether that configuration actually works day to day. A restoration shop isn’t just parking cars — you’re rolling doors open, wheeling in fenders, running an air hose, and walking around a vehicle sitting up on the platform. If the posts of a four-post lift are set too tight to the vehicle width, you’ll clip mirrors and can’t fully open doors to detail the interior or pull seats.
We walk this through with every customer before we finalize a quote: what’s the widest vehicle you’ll ever store, and how much swing do the doors actually need? Drive-on ramps with runways set wide enough for door swing cost you a little floor width, but they save you from scraping paint every time someone forgets and swings a door into a post. If your bay is narrow, a two-post lift with swing arms cleared out of the way might actually give better door access than a four-post, even though four-post is the default for pure storage. This is exactly the kind of detail that gets missed when someone buys an auto lift off a spec sheet without walking the actual bay first.
Step Three: Drive-On vs. Wheel-Engaging for Storage Duty
For seasonal storage specifically, drive-on four-post platforms are the standard, and for good reason — you’re not disassembling brakes or dropping a transmission, you’re parking a finished or near-finished project and walking away for months. A drive-on runway lets you roll a vehicle straight on and set it, no wheel adapters, no jack points to hunt for on a car that might not have a shop manual anymore.
The tradeoff is length. Drive-on runways need extra clearance front and back for the vehicle to actually drive up onto the platform, which matters in a shop where floor space is already tight around the lift footprint. If your bay is deep but not wide, that works in your favor. If it’s the opposite, you may need to reconsider layout or step down to a shorter-wheelbase configuration. Either way, this is a conversation we have on-site, not over email, because every restoration shop’s floor plan is different.
Step Four: Budget Tiers That Actually Match Storage Use
Budget for an auto lift used mainly for storage should be lower than budget for a lift that’s doing daily service work, but shop owners often price out the wrong tier. You don’t need the heaviest-duty commercial four-post rated for a service bay if you’re parking finished restorations and rarely running the platform up and down. A mid-tier four-post rated appropriately for your vehicle weight, with a basic approach ramp package, covers most seasonal storage needs without paying for features built for daily commercial cycling.
Where we do tell customers to spend up: hydraulic lock safety systems and a legitimate ALI-certified structural design, because a lift holding a vehicle in storage for months at a time still needs to be trusted completely. We’d rather see a shop spend appropriately on a mid-tier auto lift with solid certification than stretch for a top-tier commercial unit they’ll never fully use. Step Five: Concrete, Anchoring, and Install Logistics
Northern Missouri pole barns and older detached garages vary wildly in slab thickness, and this matters more for storage lifts than people expect because the load is static and long-term. Before we quote installation we ask about slab age and thickness, whether there’s a pit anywhere nearby, and whether there’s a forklift on site to help unload freight — a four-post lift ships heavy, and a shop without equipment to move crates needs to plan for that ahead of delivery day.
We also ask about lead time expectations upfront, because freight scheduling for a full four-post storage package isn’t a same-week turnaround in most cases. If your slab is thin, cracked, or unknown-age, we’ll flag that before install rather than after, since anchoring an auto lift into bad concrete is the single most common cause of problems we get called out to fix later. Getting this right the first time is cheaper than a service call six months in.
Step Six: Maintenance for a Lift That Sits Loaded Most of the Year
A storage-duty auto lift doesn’t get cycled daily like a service bay lift, but that doesn’t mean it’s maintenance-free — arguably it needs a different maintenance rhythm. Cables, cylinders, and hydraulic hoses under sustained static load for months should still get an annual inspection, because slow leaks and cable wear happen even when the platform isn’t moving much. We recommend annual inspections at minimum, and for shops running multiple storage lifts, a service plan that keeps parts like equalizer cables and hydraulic hoses in stock and ready to ship saves real downtime.

The reason we walk every seasonal storage customer through ceiling height, door swing, drive-on configuration, budget tier, concrete readiness, and maintenance rhythm — in that order — is because an auto lift bought out of sequence almost always ends up wrong in some expensive way. Someone buys tall enough for two vehicles but the doors won’t open. Someone buys drive-on ramps but the runway is too long for the bay. Someone skips the concrete check and finds out the slab can’t hold the anchor load.
None of that is complicated to avoid if you work through it in order before you buy. We’d rather spend twenty minutes on the phone talking through your ceiling number and floor plan than sell you the wrong configuration and get a service call six months later.
