We get calls every fall from guys with three or four trucks, a couple of mowers, or a trailer’s worth of seasonal equipment who need to double up floor space in a shop that just isn’t big enough. What Overhead vs Baseplate Actually Means for a Fleet Operator

An overhead auto lift routes the hydraulic and cable/chain system through a crossbar mounted above the posts, near the ceiling. That crossbar has to clear the tallest vehicle you’ll ever lift by a comfortable margin, which is the first thing that trips up fleet owners with box trucks or lifted pickups in the mix. A baseplate configuration keeps everything low, with the equalization system running along the floor between the two posts, so there’s no overhead structure to worry about at all.

For seasonal storage specifically, this is less about which one lifts better and more about what’s above and around the lift. If you’re stacking a vehicle up and parking something underneath it for months at a time, an overhead unit gives you a totally open ceiling with nothing to duck under, which some of our Council Bluffs customers prefer when they’re moving equipment in and out of that lower bay repeatedly through the winter. A baseplate unit is usually the easier retrofit into an older pole barn or metal building where the roof trusses or lighting don’t leave much room for a crossbar. Ceiling Height and Building Constraints in Council Bluffs Shops

A lot of the shops we work in around southwest Iowa were built for parking and light repair, not for two-post service equipment with 10+ feet of clearance. When a fleet operator calls about seasonal storage, the first question we ask isn’t about the vehicle, it’s about the building. Overhead configurations need real headroom above the crossbar, and if you’re in a building with 12-foot ceilings and any kind of lighting or ductwork, that math gets tight fast once you add the height of a raised pickup or van.

Baseplate configurations sidestep that problem entirely, which is exactly why we point a lot of storage-focused customers that direction. The tradeoff is that the floor-mounted equalizer bar becomes a trip hazard and a place for debris, salt, and slush to collect over a Council Bluffs winter, so housekeeping matters more with that layout. We’ve installed both in the same building for customers who wanted overhead in the main bay for daily service work and baseplate in a back storage bay where ceiling height was the limiting factor. Floor Anchoring and Concrete Readiness

Every two-post auto lift needs concrete that meets a minimum thickness and cure time, and this is one of the most common install delays we run into. Baseplate units put slightly more load through the anchors at the base since there’s no overhead structure sharing the stress, so we’re extra careful checking slab specs before we schedule that kind of install. Overhead units distribute some of that load differently through the top crossbar, but neither configuration is forgiving of cracked, thin, or freshly poured concrete.

If you’re planning seasonal storage in an existing building, we strongly recommend having us look at the pad before you commit to a configuration. We’ve had fleet owners assume their 30-year-old shop floor was fine, only to find out during a site visit that it needed supplemental anchoring or a poured pad extension in the exact spot they wanted the lift. That’s a conversation worth having in September, not in November when the vehicles you need stored are already sitting outside waiting on a bay.

Loading and Unloading Frequency Changes the Calculus

If you’re parking a vehicle for the whole season and rarely touching it, either configuration works fine and the decision comes down to building constraints. But if this is a fleet that’s rotating equipment seasonally, pulling one truck down to swap it for another every few weeks, the day-to-day experience of using the lift starts to matter. Overhead units tend to feel a little more open when you’re moving equipment in and out underneath a raised vehicle repeatedly, since there’s nothing at floor level to navigate around.

Baseplate configurations are generally quicker for us to service and adjust cables on since everything is accessible without a ladder, which matters if you’re the kind of operation doing your own quarterly inspections between our visits. We’ve had small fleets tell us the floor-level equalizer became a non-issue once they marked it clearly and trained drivers to watch for it, so it’s not a dealbreaker, just something to plan around.

Drive-On and Fleet-Specific Considerations

Some of our seasonal storage customers ask us about four-post drive-on setups instead of two-post overhead or baseplate, especially if they’re storing vehicles without lifting them for service, just parking them up and off the floor to double their footprint. A drive-on configuration skips the arm-and-pad positioning entirely, which is appealing for a fleet manager rotating drivers who may not be familiar with proper lift point placement. We still get plenty of two-post requests from Council Bluffs fleets because the footprint is smaller and the cost per bay is usually lower when you’re trying to fit multiple lifts into one building.

Whichever direction you lean, we ask about the vehicle mix up front. A fleet with a couple of half-ton pickups and a work van has different clearance and capacity needs than one running heavier one-ton trucks with toolboxes and ladder racks. We size the lift to the heaviest and tallest vehicle in the rotation, not the average, because seasonal storage plans change and today’s light-duty fleet becomes next year’s mixed fleet more often than owners expect.

Freight, Lead Time, and Site Prep Before Winter Hits

One thing we tell every fleet operator planning seasonal storage: order early. Lift freight has run anywhere from several weeks to a few months depending on the model and manufacturer backlog, and if you’re trying to get vehicles under cover before the first hard freeze, waiting until October to call us puts that timeline at risk. We also ask up front whether there’s a forklift on site for offloading, or whether we need to bring our own equipment, since that changes how we schedule the delivery day.

Site prep is the other half of that timeline. If the concrete needs work, or if you’re converting a bay that currently has other equipment in it, that has to happen before we can install anything. We try to get a site visit scheduled as soon as a fleet owner starts asking questions, even before they’ve picked overhead or baseplate, because seeing the building tells us more than a phone description ever will.

Choosing the Right Configuration for Your Bay

There’s no universally correct answer between overhead and baseplate for seasonal storage, it genuinely depends on your ceiling height, your concrete, and how often you’re rotating vehicles in and out.
