He had six trucks running routes six days a week, one bay already built, and a second bay sitting empty. Configuration One: Twin Two-Post Lifts

The first option we laid out was two side-by-side two-post lifts, both in the 10,000 lb class. For a fleet doing engine oil pan gasket work on pickups and vans, this is the layout most shops default to, and for good reason. Two-post arms swing clear of the vehicle once it’s up, giving a tech full access underneath without a post or beam in the way of the oil pan, crossmember, or exhaust. On a job where you’re pulling a pan, scraping a gasket surface, and torquing bolts back down in a pattern, that kind of clearance saves real minutes every single time.

The tradeoff is floor space and anchoring. Two posts each means four anchor points per lift, eight total, and you need enough concrete depth and clear floor to run both without the arms interfering when both lifts are loaded. Configuration Two: Four-Post Drive-On with a Rolling Jack

The second configuration was a single four-post drive-on lift paired with a rolling bridge jack, which lets you raise the vehicle on the deck and then jack the frame or axle up separately for pan removal. This setup shines when a fleet needs storage capability in addition to service — park a van up top overnight, work underneath a truck on the ground bay the next morning. For pure oil pan gasket work, though, a four-post with a jack adds a step. You drive on, raise the deck, then still need to roll the jack into position and raise the vehicle again before you can drop the pan. It’s not slower once your techs are used to it, but it is a different rhythm than a two-post, and if your fleet turns over three or four pan jobs a day, that extra step adds up across a week. We tell fleet customers this isn’t a knock against four-post lifts — they’re excellent for storage and alignment work — it’s just not the fastest path for high-frequency undercar service.

Sequencing the Build-Out: What Goes in First

Garage build-out sequencing matters more than people expect. If you’re adding an auto lift to an existing bay, the first question we ask is whether there’s already a pit, existing anchor bolts from a prior lift, or bare concrete. Fresh concrete needs cure time before anchoring — usually a matter of weeks, not days — so if you’re pouring a new pad for a second bay, that timeline needs to be locked in before you order equipment, not after it arrives on the truck.

We also ask about power before anything else ships. Most of our two-post and four-post lifts run fine on a standard 220v single-phase circuit, but some configurations and air compressor add-ons only need 110v, and getting that wrong means a licensed electrician makes two trips instead of one. Sequencing also means deciding whether you need a forklift on-site for delivery or whether our crew handles unloading — that’s a five-minute phone call that saves a delivery-day headache. Get the pad, the power, and the delivery logistics locked in before the auto lift itself arrives, and installation day goes from a half-day project to a two-hour one.

Why Fleet Bays Wear Out Faster

A fleet running six trucks through pan gasket jobs and brake work puts more cycles on a lift in a month than a typical independent shop does in a season. That’s not a knock on the equipment — it’s just math. More cycles means arm pins, locks, and cables see wear faster, and it means annual inspection isn’t optional the way it might feel optional for a shop running one or two vehicles a day. Matching Lift Capacity to the Actual Fleet

Small fleets often oversize or undersize their auto lift because they’re quoting off the heaviest vehicle they might ever own instead of what they actually run. If your fleet is half-ton pickups and cargo vans, a 10,000 lb two-post or four-post covers you with margin. If you’re running one-ton duallies or box trucks with liftgates, you need to size up, and that changes anchoring requirements and sometimes floor loading too. We walk through actual vehicle weights and wheelbases with fleet customers before quoting, because guessing high just to be safe often means paying for capacity and floor space you’ll never use, while guessing low means the lift can’t grow with the fleet.

Wheelbase matters as much as weight for oil pan work specifically. A long-wheelbase cargo van needs arm reach that a shorter-wheelbase pickup doesn’t, and if your fleet mixes both, you want an auto lift with adjustable arm configurations rather than one built around a single vehicle profile. This is a detail that’s easy to skip on a spec sheet and expensive to discover after installation.
