An overhead auto lift runs its crossbar and cable system above the vehicle, tied into a header beam bolted near the ceiling. A baseplate configuration keeps everything at floor level — the equalizer cable and hydraulic lines route through or across a steel baseplate connecting the two columns. Both are two-post designs, both lift from frame contact points, and both work fine for tire rotation and wheel-off brake work. The difference is entirely about what’s above and below the vehicle.

For a fleet running vans, pickups, or SUVs through daily wheel work, that distinction matters more than people expect. Overhead units need real ceiling clearance — we’re talking a minimum of about 12 feet in most bays once you account for the vehicle height plus lift travel. Baseplate units trade that ceiling requirement for a raised threshold across the floor, which is a tripping and rolling-cart obstruction if your techs are constantly moving jacks and wheel dollies through the bay. We walk every site in person before recommending either, because a spec sheet doesn’t tell you where your service cart traffic actually flows.

Why Ceiling Height Decides This for Most Cedar Rapids Shops

With a baseplate auto lift, drivers straddle the rail and center the vehicle between the columns, which some techs find easier to judge visually. With overhead, there’s no rail to straddle, so positioning relies more on floor markings or arm placement, but there’s nothing underfoot to catch a tire on the way in.

For fleets rotating the same handful of vehicle models repeatedly — say, a mix of half-ton pickups and cargo vans — either setup becomes second nature to your drivers within a week or two. The real variable is whether your techs are also doing brake work or suspension work off the lift, where a completely open floor around the vehicle (overhead’s advantage) makes a bigger difference than it would for pure tire rotation. If wheel and tire work is 90% of what the auto lift will see, we usually say the ceiling height decision matters more than any wheel-access nuance between the two.

Installation Logistics: Power, Concrete, and Lead Time

Both configurations need 220-volt power within about 50 feet of the install location — that’s non-negotiable for either style. Concrete requirements differ slightly: overhead installs anchor the header beam to the ceiling structure or a wall-mounted frame, which means we need to confirm what’s actually up there before we bolt anything. Baseplate installs put more of the load path into the floor slab itself, so we check slab thickness and condition as part of every site visit.

We always ask fleet customers the same logistics questions before scheduling: is there a forklift on site to move the lift components in, is there a loading dock or just a bay door, and how much floor clearance do we have to maneuver during install. Freight and delivery lead time varies by manufacturer and season, so we tell customers up front rather than guessing. None of this changes based on overhead versus baseplate, but it does change based on your specific building, and that’s why we walk the site rather than quoting off a phone call alone.

Cost and Long-Term Maintenance Differences

Baseplate configurations are generally the more budget-friendly install because there’s less structural work involved — no header beam, no ceiling anchoring engineering. Overhead units typically cost more to install for that reason, even when the lift itself is a comparable model and capacity. For a small fleet watching capital spend, that upfront difference is real and worth factoring in alongside the ceiling clearance question.

On the maintenance side, both configurations use the same core wear parts — equalizer cables, hydraulic cylinders, rubber pads — and both need annual inspection regardless of which style you choose. We do see slightly more cable wear complaints on baseplate units over years of heavy use simply because the cable routing sits closer to floor-level debris and moisture in some shops. Capacity and Vehicle Mix for Fleet Work

Small fleets running a mix of vehicle types need to size the auto lift to the heaviest vehicle in rotation, not the average one. A fleet running mostly sedans with the occasional heavier van or pickup should still spec for the pickup’s weight, because undersizing a lift for occasional heavy vehicles is one of the most common mistakes we see. Both overhead and baseplate configurations come in capacities ranging from roughly 9,000 lbs up through 12,000-15,000 lbs and beyond for models designed for one-ton trucks.

A wheel-and-tire-focused fleet bay doesn’t need extreme capacity most of the time, but if there’s any chance heavier trucks rotate through that bay, it changes the recommendation. This is also where overhead versus baseplate can interact with capacity, since some higher-capacity models are only offered in one configuration by certain manufacturers, so we check availability before we lock in a plan.

Getting the Right Auto Lift Installed the First Time

The mistake we see most often with small fleets is picking a configuration based on price alone, without checking ceiling height or floor traffic patterns first, and then living with a workaround for years. An auto lift is a long-term piece of equipment — a decade or more of daily use in most fleet applications — so the install decision deserves an in-person walkthrough, not a guess off a spec sheet.
