The Overland Build That Started This Conversation

This particular shop runs a mix of half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks, most of them modified with steel front and rear bumpers, long-travel suspension, and winches mounted well forward of the factory frame rails. None of that is a problem for a properly rated auto lift, but it does change how weight sits on the arms and how much stress runs through the equalizer cable system every single lift cycle. A stock truck rolls up evenly. A built rig with a winch bumper and a full-size spare on a swing-out carrier does not distribute weight the same way, and that uneven loading shows up first in the cables.

When we got there, the frayed strands were visible from ground level once we knew where to look, tucked near a pulley on the rear column. Iowa shops running commercial auto lift equipment are expected to have an annual inspection on file, and cables are one of the most common failure points inspectors flag. A proper inspection means checking cable strands for fraying, corrosion, and flat spots, checking that both sides of the equalizer system carry tension evenly, and confirming the safety locks and pins engage the way they’re supposed to at every height. We file our inspection reports electronically as PDFs specifically so a shop has a clean paper trail if an insurance carrier, a landlord, or an OSHA visit ever asks for proof.

The builder in this case had never had a formal annual inspection on this particular lift, just general maintenance when something felt off. That’s common with independent shops and home-based builders who don’t have a fleet manager reminding them. Once we walked him through what an inspection actually covers — cables, pulleys, hydraulic lines, locking mechanisms, structural bolts — he understood why the annual check exists separately from just “does it still lift the truck.” A cable can look fine under load and still be one bad cycle from snapping.

The Repair: Replacement, Not a Patch

Once we confirmed the fraying, there was no debate about repairing versus replacing. Frayed cable strands don’t get better, and a cable that’s already showing wear at one pulley point is telling you the whole run is under more stress than it should be. We replaced both equalizer cables as a set rather than just the damaged one, which is standard practice — mismatched cable tension between old and new is its own failure risk on any auto lift.

We had the correct cable length and diameter for his model in stock, which mattered because this shop couldn’t afford to have the lift down for a week during an active build season. That’s a common concern we hear on calls: “how long is this down for” matters as much as the fix itself when a lift is the only one in the shop. We got the cables swapped, tension set correctly on both sides, and the lift back in service the same day, with the inspection paperwork updated to reflect the repair.

Lead Time, Parts Lookup, and Getting the Right Cable the First Time

One thing we stress with builders running non-stock vehicles: don’t guess on cable part numbers. Equalizer cables vary by lift model, by length, and sometimes by a manufacturer revision within the same model line, and installing the wrong one can throw off equalization even if it technically fits. We look up cables by the specific model — whether it’s a Rotary, Challenger, Forward, or BendPak-style two-post — rather than assuming one general cable fits every lift of a given weight rating.

For shops in southeast Iowa and anywhere else in the state, having a parts source that keeps common cable sizes in stock matters more than people think until they’re the ones waiting. A lift down for a cable that has to be special-ordered is lost bay time, and for a build-heavy shop that’s lost revenue on top of a failed inspection. It takes a few minutes: look at the cable where it contacts each pulley, check for fraying or flat spots, and confirm both sides of the equalizer look evenly tensioned under load.

This builder now has that on his shop calendar as a recurring task, not just something that happens when the state inspection comes due. It’s a small habit that catches a cable problem while it’s still a cheap fix instead of a lift that fails mid-cycle with a truck in the air. Any auto lift benefits from that kind of routine attention, but it’s especially true for shops pushing weight and geometry the lift wasn’t originally imagining when it left the factory floor.

What This Means for Other Iowa Shops Running Modified Vehicles

This job is a good example of why we push every shop, not just overland builders, toward taking cable condition seriously between formal inspections. An auto lift is a mechanical system with wear parts, and cables are near the top of that list regardless of brand. Whether you’re running a Rotary two-post, a Challenger four-post, or an older Forward lift that’s been in the shop for a decade, the same physics apply: uneven or heavy loads wear cables faster, dirty pulleys accelerate that wear, and a visual check from across the room misses the early warning signs every time.
