A tech who’d been doing suspension and shock replacement out of a service van for years was finally putting up a shop, and he called us before he poured a single yard of concrete. Good move. Why Suspension and Shock Work Changes the Auto Lift Conversation

Suspension and shock replacement isn’t like an oil change or a tire rotation. You need the wheels hanging free, sometimes at full droop, and you need clean access to the strut towers, control arms, and sway bar links without a frame contact lift getting in the way. That’s why this particular mechanic wanted a true two-post above-ground unit instead of a mid-rise or a drive-on four-post. With the frame-engaging arms holding the car by the pinch welds or a factory jack point, the suspension hangs loose and you can pull springs, struts, and shocks without fighting the lift for clearance.

We talk through this with almost every mobile mechanic who’s transitioning into a fixed shop. The auto lift you choose has to match the work you actually do, not just the vehicles you see most. If you’re mostly doing shocks and struts on trucks and SUVs, you want enough lifting height and arm reach to get under a raised truck safely, and you want a lift rated with margin above your heaviest customer vehicle. We’d rather talk someone out of an undersized lift up front than get a call six months later asking why the arms won’t reach a 3/4-ton pickup.

Concrete and Anchoring Come Before the Auto Lift Order

Every lift install starts with the slab. Before we ever schedule delivery, we ask about concrete thickness, age, and rebar, because a two-post lift puts real anchor load into a small footprint. A slab poured for a garage with no lift in mind is often too thin or too green to hold anchors safely. On this Waukee build, the mechanic asked us early, which let him spec the slab correctly instead of tearing it out later. We generally want a documented depth and cure time before we’ll set columns, and if the concrete isn’t right, we say so instead of installing on a bad foundation.

Power Requirements Nobody Thinks About Until It’s Too Late

Most mid-size and heavy two-post lifts run on 220V power, and that single fact trips up more garage builds than anything else on this list. Electricians wiring a new shop from scratch often default to standard 120V circuits unless someone tells them otherwise. We’ve fielded plenty of questions from customers asking whether a lift needs a compressor too, and the honest answer depends on the model — some are hydraulic-electric combos, some need shop air for the locks, and mixing that up during rough-in wiring means an expensive callback.

On the Waukee project, we gave the electrician the exact voltage and amperage draw before the panel went in, along with where the power unit needed to land relative to the columns, since the hoses and cables only reach so far. That’s a detail people skip — the power unit typically has to mount on one specific column, not just wherever’s convenient, so the electrical drop needs to be planned for that side of the bay. Nail this early and the auto lift install itself takes an afternoon. Get it wrong and you’re cutting into finished walls.

Delivery Logistics: Forklifts, Docks, and Curb Access

Once concrete and power are sorted, we shift to freight. A two-post auto lift ships in multiple heavy crates — columns, arms, power unit, hardware — and it doesn’t move like a pallet of brake pads. We ask every customer the same questions before scheduling delivery: is there a forklift on site, is there a loading dock or just a curb, and how far is that curb from the actual install bay. A mobile mechanic working out of a converted pole barn usually doesn’t have dock-height access, so we plan for curbside drop and manual staging, which changes our labor estimate and timeline.

Lead times matter here too. Depending on the manufacturer and season, lift lead times can stretch out, so we tell customers early rather than let them assume a lift ordered this month arrives next week. On this job we coordinated delivery to land after the concrete cure window and after the electrical rough-in passed inspection, so the crates sat for exactly as long as needed and no longer. Staging heavy steel in a half-finished garage for weeks is asking for damage or a jobsite injury, so timing the freight to the build-out schedule is part of the job, not an afterthought.

Choosing Between a Two-Post and Four-Post for Shock and Strut Work

We get this question from almost every mobile mechanic making the jump to a shop: two-post or four-post? For suspension and shock replacement specifically, a two-post frame-engaging lift almost always wins, because it leaves the wheels hanging free. A four-post drive-on lift is great for alignments, general service, and long-term storage, but the wheels sit on the runways, which makes pulling a shock or strut assembly clumsy at best. If your work is heavy on suspension diagnostics and component swaps, don’t let a lower price tag talk you into the wrong configuration.

That said, we’ve installed plenty of shops with both — a two-post for suspension and brake work, and a four-post drive-on for alignments, tire storage, or a second vehicle parked overhead. If floor space in Waukee is at a premium, a four-post can double as storage between suspension jobs, which is worth factoring into the build-out plan. We spec these in with the original quote whenever a customer tells us their vehicle mix includes anything unusual, whether that’s lifted trucks or lowered imports, so the auto lift arrives ready for the actual fleet you’re servicing instead of a generic sedan.

What a Well-Sequenced Build-Out Looks Like From Start to Finish

Here’s the order we recommend, and the order that worked on this Waukee project: nail down the vehicle mix and work type first, pick the lift configuration second, then design the slab, ceiling height, and electrical around that specific lift’s footprint and power draw. Only after concrete cures and rough electrical passes inspection do we schedule freight delivery, timed against forklift or curb access at the site. Install happens last, once the building is actually ready to receive it.

Skip a step and you pay for it later — thin concrete that needs replacing, a 120V circuit that has to be re-run, a door header that’s two inches short. We’d rather spend twenty minutes on the phone with a mobile mechanic before he breaks ground than spend a day on-site telling him the auto lift can’t go where he framed it for.
