We hear this question constantly from performance shops, dealerships, and home garages alike, and the honest answer is that it depends less on preference and more on your ceiling, your floor, and your budget. Why Suspension Work Changes the Auto Lift Conversation

Suspension and shock replacement is different from an oil change or a tire rotation. You’re working at wheel height, wrestling with spring compressors, and sometimes leaning hard into a wheel well with a breaker bar. That means arm reach, swing clearance, and stability under load matter more than they would for basic service. A lot of the calls we get start the same way a home mechanic or small shop owner starts: they’ve been doing this work on stands or a cheap ramp and they’re tired of it. When we talk through what kind of auto lift fits, we’re really asking how the vehicle needs to move and how much room the technician needs around it.

For a race team doing shocks, struts, and corner-weighting between events, the lift also has to keep the car stable while someone’s torquing hardware at an angle, sometimes with the wheel off entirely. That rules out anything flimsy. It’s part of why we steer performance and racing customers toward a full two-post configuration rather than a lighter-duty option, even if the vehicles themselves aren’t heavy. The work being done, not just the vehicle weight, drives the decision.

Overhead Configuration: When Ceiling Height Isn’t the Problem

An overhead two-post auto lift routes the crossbar above the vehicle, tying the posts together at the top instead of at the ground. This is the configuration most people picture when they think of a classic shop lift, and for good reason — it’s rock solid because the overhead beam keeps both posts locked together under load, which matters when you’re pulling on a strut or breaking loose a seized shock bolt. If your building has the clearance, typically in the range most 10,000 to 12,000 lb two-post lifts need, overhead is usually our default recommendation for suspension-heavy work.

The tradeoff is exactly what it sounds like: you need the ceiling. We’ve had customers call us excited about a lift only to find out their building has ductwork, a bay door track, or a low truss right where the crossbar would sit. That’s why we always ask about building height and any overhead obstructions before quoting, the same way we’d ask whether there’s a forklift on site for unloading or whether the floor is a slab that can handle anchoring. For a shop with 12 feet or more of clear height and no overhead obstacles, an overhead auto lift gives you the best combination of strength and value for shock and suspension work.

Baseplate Configuration: The Low-Ceiling and Flexibility Answer

A baseplate, or floorplate, two-post lift ties the posts together through a plate on the ground instead of a beam overhead. That opens up the full height of the vehicle with nothing above it, which is a real advantage for suspension work where you might want extra room to maneuver a spring compressor or lift a wheel higher out of the well. It’s also the only real option in buildings with low ceilings, drop-down HVAC, or a mezzanine — situations we run into more than people expect, even in newer commercial buildings.

The compromise is floor space. That baseplate sits right where you’d otherwise roll a floor jack or a creeper, and it can be a mild annoyance in a tight bay. We tell customers to think about how they actually move around the car during a shock and strut job — if you need to get a jack under the control arms while the vehicle’s up, a baseplate can get in the way. For a lot of home garage owners and smaller shops, though, the tradeoff is worth it, and a quality baseplate auto lift still handles suspension work just fine at typical passenger and light truck capacities.

Building a Budget-to-Configuration Decision Tree

When a customer calls us undecided, we walk it in order: capacity first, ceiling second, floor space third, then brand and options last. Capacity depends on what you’re actually lifting — a dedicated race team running mostly lighter chassis has different needs than a shop that also services trucks and SUVs on the side. From there, ceiling height usually makes the overhead-versus-baseplate decision for you before budget even enters the picture, because there’s no point pricing an overhead unit if it won’t fit.

Once configuration is settled, budget shapes brand and features — swing arm style, adapter kits for suspension work, drive-on versus symmetric arms. We’d rather quote the right auto lift once than sell a mismatch and get a service call later.

What Delivery and Install Actually Look Like

Once someone picks a configuration, the next questions are always logistics: is there a pit, is the floor concrete and how thick, do we have a forklift on site, and what’s the lead time. Those questions matter more than people expect. We’ve had orders held up simply because a manufacturer’s lead time ran longer than planned, and we tell customers up front rather than let them assume a delivery date that isn’t realistic. Concrete readiness is its own conversation too — anchoring a two-post lift into a slab that’s too thin or too old can undo the whole installation, so we check that before we ever schedule a crew.

For a race team working around an event schedule, timing is everything, and we plan installs around it rather than the other way around. That’s true whether it’s an overhead unit going into a shop with high clearance or a baseplate model going into a tighter bay. Either way, our crews handle the move-in, anchoring, and startup so the auto lift is ready to load the same week it’s installed, not weeks later after someone else figures out the concrete.

Arms, Adapters, and Suspension-Specific Extras

Suspension and shock work puts unusual demands on lift arms. You want enough reach and swing to get around a wheel well, and you want pad height that won’t fight the vehicle’s factory lift points when a spring is unloaded. We see this come up constantly with lowered cars and race builds where factory pad height doesn’t work at all, and customers end up needing extended or low-profile adapters. It’s a small add to the order but it saves real frustration on the shop floor.

We also get a lot of calls about arm restraint and locking mechanisms, especially from shops running older or used equipment where the arms won’t lock or swivel properly anymore — that’s a common repair call, not just a new-lift question. If you’re buying new, ask about the arm locking design up front; if you already own one and it’s not swiveling right, that’s usually a simple structural component repair, not a reason to replace the whole auto lift.

Service, Parts, and Keeping the Lift Running

A lift that sees daily suspension work earns its keep, but it also wears equalizer cables, hydraulic hoses, cylinders, and foot pad inserts faster than a lift doing light service.
