Rotating tires on dually pickups, one-ton service trucks, or medium-duty box trucks all day is a different job than general repair. You need the wheels fully off the ground and hanging free, good access to all four corners at once, and enough capacity that you’re not second-guessing the rating every time a heavier truck rolls in. A lot of shops default to whatever lift they can find used, and then find out the arms don’t reach the pickup points on a dually or the lift is rated too close to the truck’s actual weight once it’s loaded with tools and a full tank.

For tire and wheel-focused bays we usually point shops toward a two-post lift in the 10,000 to 18,000 pound range, sometimes higher if the shop is servicing box trucks or straight trucks regularly. The arm configuration matters as much as the capacity — you want reach that clears frame rails and rocker panels on the trucks you actually see, not just what fits a passenger car. This is where a quick conversation about your typical vehicle mix saves you from buying the wrong auto lift and needing adapters or a redo six months in.

The Real Cost Breakdown: Lift, Freight, and Install

When we quote an auto lift, the number people fixate on is the lift price itself. But that’s really just one line item. Freight to southern Minnesota adds a chunk depending on how far out you are and whether the shipment needs a liftgate truck or you’ve got a forklift on site to unload it yourself. Then there’s the install labor — bolting the columns, running hydraulic lines, calibrating the safety locks, and testing the lift under load before we hand you the keys.

Installation Prep: What We Check Before We Ever Show Up

Before we schedule an install crew, we ask a handful of questions that determine almost everything about scope and cost. Do you have a forklift on site, or do we need to plan for a liftgate delivery? Is there a pit or is this a surface-mount install? What’s the ceiling height, and is there anything overhead — HVAC ductwork, lighting, a mezzanine — that could interfere with a raised two-post lift or an overhead beam on a four-post? These sound like small details but they change the install plan completely.

Concrete readiness is the big one for heavy-duty applications. A lift rated for 15,000 or 18,000 pounds needs a slab that’s thick enough and cured long enough to hold the anchor bolts under real load — this isn’t the same requirement as a light-duty two-post in a passenger car shop. If your slab is old, cracked, or unknown thickness, we’ll recommend a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection before we commit to an install date. Showing up to a site that isn’t ready wastes everybody’s time, so we’d rather ask the awkward questions on the phone than find out on install day.

Choosing the Right Lift for Truck Tire and Wheel Volume

Not every heavy-duty shop needs the same auto lift. A shop that’s mostly doing tire rotations and brake work on one-ton pickups and vans has different needs than a shop pulling wheels off box trucks and small straight trucks all day. We look at your actual duty cycle — how many vehicles a day, what weight class, how often the lift gets used versus sitting idle — before recommending a specific model and capacity.

Two-post lifts in the higher capacity range give you the open floor access that makes tire and wheel work fast, since nothing’s blocking the wheel wells once the vehicle is up. Four-post lifts can work too, especially if you also need a stable platform for alignment-adjacent work, but they’re generally slower for pure tire rotation since you’re driving on and off rather than swinging arms into place. Lead Time and Scheduling Around Your Shop’s Workflow

Once you’ve settled on a lift, lead time becomes the next real variable.
