Most collectors shopping for an auto lift focus on weight capacity and forget that the vehicle has to clear the top of the lift with the door open and the roof rack, antenna, or lightbar still attached. A two-post lift with the vehicle raised to comfortable working height plus the frame height of the vehicle itself can eat ten to eleven feet of ceiling in a hurry. In a converted pole barn or an older detached garage, that number is tighter than people expect, especially once you add lighting fixtures, garage door tracks, or a truss that dips lower than the walls suggest.

We’ve had customers ask whether they should just center the lift and adjust later; we always say measure the actual car doors open, not the lift footprint on paper. Wide truck doors and long coupe doors behave differently, and a lift that clears one vehicle’s doors might not clear the next collector car that rolls through. The control panel location matters too — we generally set it on the front driver’s side post so the operator has a clear sightline to the vehicle while raising it, and in a crowded garage that placement also determines which side needs the most open floor space.
What the Concrete Actually Needs to Handle
Before we ever talk about the auto lift itself, we talk about the slab underneath it. Older garages and pole barns weren’t always poured to commercial shop standards, and a lift anchored into thin or cracked concrete is a liability no matter how good the equipment is. We ask for slab thickness and age up front, and if there’s any doubt, we recommend a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection before the deposit goes down.

Choosing Between a Two-Post and a Four-Post for Storage and Service
A lot of collectors default to a four-post because it feels safer for long-term storage, and that instinct isn’t wrong — a four-post drive-on setup is excellent for parking a vehicle up in the air to free floor space. But if you’re planning any actual wrenching, especially transmission work, a two-post gives you full access underneath with nothing blocking the pan, the crossmember, or the driveshaft. We ask every collector the same question: is this auto lift primarily for storage, or will you actually be working under the vehicle? The answer changes the recommendation completely.
For the owner in this story, the decision came down to versatility. He wanted to store a vehicle up top some of the time, but he also wanted to be able to drop a transmission without renting shop time elsewhere.
