We’ve talked to more than a few weekend mechanics up in northern Missouri and across our own backyard in Iowa who fell in love with a two-post online, sent a deposit, and then discovered their garage ceiling, slab, or door opening wasn’t going to cooperate. Why a Site Survey Matters Before You Buy an Auto Lift
Every week someone calls us after they’ve already bought equipment, asking whether their garage can actually handle it. We’d much rather have that conversation first. A site survey is nothing fancy — it’s ceiling height, floor slab thickness, door clearance, and electrical, measured before money changes hands. For a weekend mechanic doing tire rotations and wheel work, this matters more than horsepower or brand names, because a lift that can’t fully rise in your space is worthless no matter how good the hydraulics are.
We ask the same questions on every call: how tall is your ceiling from slab to the lowest obstruction, is there a garage door header in the way, and how thick is your concrete. Most production-built homes have a 4-inch slab, which is often too thin for a two-post lift rated for a full-size truck. If you’re only rotating tires and doing wheel work on cars and light trucks, you may not need the same anchoring depth a heavy commercial install requires, but you still need to know your number before you buy an auto lift instead of after.
Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance for Tire Rotation Work
For tire rotation and wheel work, you don’t need a lift that maxes out at 12 feet of rise, but you do need enough clearance to get wheels off the ground and comfortably work around them. We tell people to measure from the floor to the lowest point overhead — that includes garage door tracks, light fixtures, ductwork, and roof trusses — not just the peak of the ceiling. A lot of northern Missouri and Iowa garages have exposed trusses that eat up more headroom than folks expect.
Two-post lifts and four-post drive-on lifts both have a minimum ceiling height to reach full rise, and that number is published for every model we sell. If your garage has an 8-foot ceiling, your options narrow fast, and a low-rise or mid-rise scissor lift built for wheel service might make more sense than a full two-post. We’d rather steer you toward the right lift the first time than have you order something that only rises three-quarters of the way and still leaves you bent over for tire work.
Concrete Slab Thickness and Anchoring Requirements
The single most common reason a home auto lift installation gets delayed is a slab that isn’t rated for it. Most two-post lifts need a minimum of 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and some manufacturers call for more depending on the lift’s capacity. If your garage floor was poured for parking cars and nothing else, it may not have the depth or the cure time to safely anchor a lift, especially over a rebar mesh or a control joint.
Before you order, core a test hole or have someone pull your permit records to check slab depth. If you’re not sure, we’d rather look at photos or talk through it on the phone than have a customer discover this on install day. Cracks near a proposed post location, expansion joints running through the footprint, or a slab poured over fill dirt instead of compacted base are all things that change the anchoring plan. A four-post lift, since it distributes weight differently and doesn’t require the same anchor pull-out strength as a two-post, is sometimes the better call for a marginal slab doing light wheel and tire work.
Door Clearance, Drive-In Angle, and Turning Room
Getting the vehicle in is half the battle. We ask every customer about their garage door width and height, and whether there’s a turn required to get the car centered on the lift columns. A two-post lift needs room to swing the arms out fully to reach factory lift points, and if your bay is narrow, that arm swing can hit a wall or a workbench you forgot was there.
For tire rotation and wheel work specifically, you also want enough side clearance to roll a tire cart or air tool hose around the vehicle once it’s up. We’ve seen garages where the lift technically fits, but there’s no room left to actually work once the car is in the air. Measure your bay width at the narrowest point, not just at the door, and account for support columns or storage shelving along the walls before you commit to a lift size.
Electrical and Air Compressor Requirements
This is the one we get asked about constantly, and for good reason — it’s easy to overlook. Most auto lifts run on a dedicated 220V circuit, and depending on the model, some also need shop air to release the locks. If your garage is only wired for 110V outlets and a single circuit for the freezer, you’ll need an electrician before install day, not during it.
We also get asked whether the lift price includes the air compressor needed to run it — it typically doesn’t, since most home garages already have one, but if yours doesn’t, plan that into your budget separately from the lift itself. Walk your panel, count your open breaker slots, and know your amperage before you order so there’s no surprise when our crew shows up ready to bolt the lift down and there’s no power to run it.
Freight, Delivery Access, and Getting the Lift Off the Truck
An auto lift doesn’t arrive in a box you carry inside. It ships on a pallet, often over a thousand pounds of steel, and it comes on a freight truck. We ask every customer the same thing: is there a loading dock, a forklift, or at minimum a driveway a freight truck can back into without getting stuck. Rural northern Missouri properties with long gravel drives or steep approaches sometimes need extra planning so the truck doesn’t get stranded.
If you don’t have equipment to unload a pallet yourself, tell us ahead of time — we can plan a liftgate delivery or coordinate our install crew’s schedule so unloading and installation happen the same visit. Nothing wastes more time than a pallet sitting in a driveway for two weeks because nobody could move it. Getting this logistics piece sorted during the site survey, before your auto lift ships, keeps the whole project on schedule instead of stalling out right at the finish line.
What to Ask Before You Sign for an Auto Lift
Once the site survey checks out, there are still a few practical questions worth asking before you send a deposit. Ask whether the arms are symmetric or asymmetric — that affects how you position the vehicle and whether doors clear the posts. Ask about lead time, since freight schedules shift, and ask what’s included versus what you’re expected to supply, like the air compressor or anchor bolts.
It’s also worth asking about support after the sale. A lift is a long-term piece of equipment, and cables, cylinders, and hydraulic hoses wear out over years of tire rotation and wheel work.
