An auto lift is the single piece of equipment an EV specialty shop in Iowa City can least afford to get wrong, and the mistakes almost always happen before the truck ever shows up. We are based in Ames and we drive to Iowa City often enough that we have seen the same pattern over and over: a shop owner signs a lease, orders equipment, schedules a technician, and only then discovers the slab is four inches of unknown-age concrete over questionable base, the ceiling is a foot shorter than the spec sheet wants, and the panel has no room for another 220V circuit. None of that is hard to solve. All of it is expensive to solve late. This piece is about killing the myths that create those surprises.

Myth: “Any concrete floor is good enough”

This is the myth that causes the most damage, and it is the one we hear most often from shops moving into older Iowa City buildings. Concrete is not concrete. A manufacturer spec for a 10,000 lb two-post typically calls for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI cured concrete, and many models want more. But thickness is only half the story. What matters just as much is what is underneath: compacted base, or fill dirt that settled in 1978 and never got touched again. We have cored slabs in eastern Iowa that measured a perfect five inches and still had voids beneath them.

The fix is cheap if you do it first. We core-test before installation, and if the slab does not qualify, the standard remedy is a cut-out and pour of an engineered pad sized to the manufacturer’s footprint requirement. That work costs a fraction of what it costs to tear out an installed column, repour, and reinstall. For an EV shop doing tire rotation and wheel work all day, the loads are cycling constantly, so anchor pull-out risk is not theoretical. Get the core sample. It takes an hour and it is the best money you will spend on the whole project.

Myth: “I can figure out the power after it’s bolted down”

Power is the second-most common late discovery. Most two-post and four-post units ship with a motor that can be wired 208-230V single phase, and plenty of shops assume a standard outlet will cover it. It will not. You need a dedicated circuit, correctly sized breaker, and a disconnect within sight of the equipment in most jurisdictions. If your building has three-phase available, that is often the better route for a shop running multiple bays, because the motors run cooler and draw less per leg.

Where this gets specific for Iowa City is inspection. City electrical inspection is real and it is not a formality, particularly in commercial occupancies and especially in older mixed-use buildings on the east side. We tell customers to loop their electrician in during the layout conversation, not after. Decide where the power unit goes, then run conduit to that spot before the columns arrive. Also worth planning: an EV shop typically wants compressed air, a wheel balancer circuit, and charging infrastructure all in the same envelope. Sequence those together and you pay one mobilization fee instead of three. We have watched shops spend more on repeat electrician trips than on the equipment itself.

Myth: “Ceiling height is just the column height plus a little”

A clearfloor two-post runs its hydraulic and equalizer lines through an overhead crossbar, and that crossbar has a shutoff bar on it. The published overall height on a common 10,000 lb clearfloor model lands around 12 feet, which means a 12-foot sidewall pole building or a 12-foot ceiling is marginal at best. Add a vehicle on the carriage and you need to know what your actual usable rise will be, not the theoretical maximum. That is a very different number.

For EV work specifically, the vehicles are getting taller. A crossover with a roof rack on a raised carriage eats ceiling fast. If you are height-constrained, the answer is usually a baseplate model, which routes lines through a floor plate instead of overhead and drops your required clearance substantially. The tradeoff is a small bump in the floor that rolling jacks and floor jacks have to cross. Plenty of Iowa City shops accept that tradeoff happily. We also install mid-rise scissor units for shops that only need enough rise for tire and wheel work and want to keep the ceiling completely open for lighting, hoist rails, or an overhead reel bank. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the bay, including the garage door track in its open position, not to the peak. The door track is the thing that gets missed.

Myth: “An auto lift install is a one-day job, always”

Sometimes it is. A clean slab, clear bay, power already run, and a two-person crew can set and commission a two-post in a single day. But we quote realistic timelines because the shops that plan for one day and get three are the ones who lose revenue. If a slab cut-out is needed, you are looking at demolition, forming, pouring, and then a cure window before anchors can be torqued. That cure is not negotiable and no amount of scheduling pressure changes concrete chemistry.

An honest auto lift installation timeline for an Iowa City EV shop looks like this: site survey and core test in week one, concrete remediation if needed in week two, cure through week three, delivery and set in week four, commissioning and ANSI-standard inspection the same day. If everything checks out on the first visit, you compress that to days. We would rather tell a shop owner the long version and beat it than promise the short version and blow the opening date. Also budget for the small stuff that eats hours: bay layout chalk lines, anchor drilling through rebar, shimming columns plumb on a floor with drainage slope. Iowa shop floors almost always have slope toward a drain, and every column gets shimmed.

Myth: “Symmetric or asymmetric doesn’t really matter”

It matters enormously for an EV specialty shop, and it is the configuration decision we spend the most time on during a site survey. Asymmetric two-posts rotate the columns and use uneven arm lengths so the vehicle sits back in the bay, letting doors open wide. That is great for general repair where techs are in and out of the cabin constantly. Symmetric configurations center the vehicle between the columns and typically handle longer, heavier vehicles better with a more balanced load path.

EV battery packs sit low and central, which shifts weight distribution compared to an internal combustion vehicle of the same size. Pickup points are also different and often manufacturer-specified, so your arm and adapter package matters more than it used to. We spec taller stack adapters and, where the OEM calls for it, frame-specific cradles. For a shop doing tire rotation and wheel work all day, the throughput question is simple: how fast can a tech get the vehicle set, raised, and wheels off? Arm reach and adapter selection answer that. A versymmetric design splits the difference and is what we recommend most often for mixed EV and hybrid fleets in eastern Iowa. Talk through your actual vehicle mix before you order, because swapping arm sets after the fact is possible but never free.

Myth: “Once it’s installed, it takes care of itself”

Every unit we install comes with a maintenance schedule, and most of it takes under fifteen minutes a week. Check hydraulic fluid level. Look at the cables or chains for fraying and correct tension. Verify the lock mechanisms engage audibly on both columns at every position. Inspect arm restraint pins for wear. Wipe the columns and check for hydraulic weeping at fittings. That is the entire routine and it is what keeps an installation running fifteen years instead of six.

The annual inspection is the other half. ANSI/ALI standards call for a yearly inspection by a qualified inspector, and in a commercial shop that is not optional if you care about liability and your insurance carrier. We perform these across eastern Iowa and we find the same failure items repeatedly: worn arm restraints, seized lock dogs from lack of lubrication, and equalizer cables out of adjustment. All of those are cheap to correct when caught and dangerous when ignored. If you inherited equipment with a building, get it inspected before you put weight on it. What a real site survey looks like in Iowa City

When we come out, we bring a tape, a core drill, a level, and a laser. We measure bay width wall to wall and column to column, ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, distance to the nearest panel, and the slope of the floor. We core the slab at the proposed anchor locations, not in the middle of the bay where the concrete is thickest. We photograph the panel and the available breaker spaces. We ask what vehicles you actually service, not what you hope to service someday, and then we ask again about the heaviest one.
