His business model shaped every decision. A mobile tech doing state inspection work needs a bay that turns vehicles fast, handles everything from a Civic to a three-quarter-ton pickup, and doesn’t demand a second person. He wasn’t building a shop; he was building one reliable station. The building had a 6 inch slab poured in 2014 at 4,000 PSI — we confirmed with the landlord’s original pour documentation, then core-sampled anyway because paperwork and reality don’t always match. Clear height under the purlins measured 13 feet 4 inches with no obstructions in the intended bay, which opened up more model options than most leased Iowa spaces.
Power was the sticking point, and it’s the question we field most often. He had a single 120V circuit and asked whether he needed 220V. For anything with real capacity, the honest answer is yes — most commercial two-post and four-post power units run 208/230V single phase, and running one off an extension-cord-grade circuit is not a plan. The Used Unit He Almost Bought
Before he called us he’d found a used two-post on a farm auction listing east of Grimes — a legitimate name-brand asymmetric unit, ten thousand pound rated, priced attractively enough that he’d nearly wired a deposit. He asked us to look at it first, which is exactly the right instinct. We met him at the seller’s shed on a cold Saturday. Then we pulled the top covers and looked at the equalizer cables. Why Cables Are the Part That Fails First
On a two-post, the equalizer cables don’t carry the vehicle — hydraulics do that. What the cables do is keep the two carriages level with each other, and that job means they’re constantly flexing over sheaves at the top and bottom of each column. Realistic Cable Inspection and Replacement Intervals
Here’s the guidance we gave him, and it’s what we give every Iowa shop. Visual inspection of cables: monthly, and it takes two minutes. Look at every accessible inch for broken wires, flat spots, kinks, corrosion, and any sign of a cable riding off-center in a sheave. Check tension by watching whether the carriages arrive level at full height — a drift of more than about a quarter inch side to side means the cables have stretched unevenly and need adjustment. Detailed inspection with covers off, including the overhead run and every sheave: annually, at minimum, as part of a certified inspection.
Replacement interval is where people want a single number and there isn’t one. Manufacturers generally point to condition-based replacement rather than a fixed calendar, but practically: a high-cycle commercial bay often needs cables somewhere in the three-to-six-year window, a moderate independent shop five to eight, and a low-cycle home or single-bay operation can go a decade if the environment is dry and the sheaves are aligned. The rule that overrides all of it — if you find broken wires, a kink, a flat spot, corrosion pitting, or any visible core, replace both cables as a set immediately and don’t lift another vehicle. The Install: Dimensions, Anchors, and Getting It Square
We set a new symmetric two-post in his bay with baseplates 11 feet 8 inches apart on center, positioned so the driveway approach gave him 26 feet of clear pull-in. Overhead beam height landed at 12 feet 4 inches with a full foot of headroom to the purlins. Anchors went into 6 inches of sound concrete at manufacturer-specified embedment and torque, with the torque values written on the install sheet and left with him. We shim as needed to get the columns plumb, because a column that’s out of plumb loads the carriage slide blocks unevenly and wears them out early — and uneven carriage wear eventually shows up as a cable problem.
Cable routing on a new install is the moment to get it right forever. Every sheave gets checked for free rotation, every cable gets confirmed centered in its groove, and we run the carriages full travel several times watching for any contact with brackets, conduit, or the overhead assembly. That flattened strand we found on the used auction unit almost certainly started as a routing mistake on install day fifteen years earlier. Nobody caught it, and the cable ground itself down for a decade and a half. Ten minutes of care at commissioning is the cheapest cable maintenance there is. Daily Habits for a One-Person Auto Lift Bay
A solo operator doesn’t have a shop foreman looking over his shoulder, so the routine has to be short enough to actually happen. Annually, book a certified inspection.
