Month one: the slab conversation nobody wants to have
Our Dubuque customer had poured a 4-inch slab five years earlier, unreinforced, mostly for parking a truck. When he sent us the mix ticket we saw 3,000 PSI and a fiber additive, which is workable but on the edge for a 4-post auto lift under a loaded car. We ran the math with him: an 8,000 lb capacity 4-post spreads its load across four runway feet, which means each foot carries maybe 2,000 lb static. That is well inside a good 4-inch slab. But a 4-post rated for alignment work stresses the concrete at the caster plates and slip plates during the pull, and we wanted a margin. He ended up saw-cutting his four column footprints and pouring 8-inch pads underneath — a Saturday of work plus a bag or two of high-early mix. When the lift arrived, every anchor landed clean.
Month two: install day and the first vehicle up
Install on a 4-post auto lift takes two people and one long afternoon. Our Dubuque install ran seven hours from crate-open to the first car up and locked. The heavy step is standing the runways: two people lift the front end while a third slides the crossbeams into place. We do not recommend doing it alone. Month four: winter storage and stacked bays

He runs a battery tender to the stored car and a moisture trap in the exhaust. The turnplates drop into flush recesses in the runway, and the caster sweep during the alignment pull is where the load path really tests your slab. Month eight: the first real service call
At eight months the Dubuque lift threw a hydraulic warning: the cylinder was seeping at the rod-seal, a very small drip, once every couple of hours. He caught it because a paper towel under the cylinder was damp the next morning. We shipped him a seal kit the same week and he replaced it in an afternoon. That is the honest first-year auto lift experience — one seep, one seal kit, one afternoon. Cheaper lifts throw more seeps sooner and often across multiple cylinders at once. Month ten: cable adjustment and the runway level
At about the ten-month mark most 4-post cables settle in and want a small tension adjustment. Our Dubuque customer noticed the passenger-side rear was about 3/16 inch lower than the driver-side rear at full lock. That is normal cable stretch, and the adjustment nut on the top of each column takes it out. It is a fifteen-minute job with a wrench and a level. We told him to level to the least-worn lock position, not the highest, because the highest is where wear appears first. He set the runways dead level in one pass and the lift has stayed there ever since. Skipping this adjustment is what starts uneven cable wear and turns a five-year cable replacement into a three-year one.
Twelve months in: what he tells other collectors
At the twelve-month mark our Dubuque customer sent a photo of the shop with all three cars accounted for — one on the auto lift, one under it, one on jack stands for a brake job. His summary sentence when we called for the anniversary follow-up: buy more capacity than you need, pour more concrete than you need, and buy the turnplates the same day you buy the lift.
