A car restoration shop owner in northeast Iowa asked us a question we get more often than any other electrical question: does he really need three-phase power for his new auto lift, or will single-phase 220V work? His shop was in a rural building with 200-amp service and no three-phase feeder anywhere close. What he actually needed was a decision tree covering phase, voltage, amperage, wire gauge, and disconnect location — a tree that pointed most home and small-shop buyers straight at single-phase 220V and answered the three-phase question honestly. Branch one: single-phase 220V versus three-phase

Almost every auto lift under 15,000 lb capacity ships with a 220V single-phase motor as standard. Three-phase is a special order and costs more. Three-phase makes sense only if your shop already has three-phase service running to the panel — otherwise you are paying extra for a motor that will not even turn on. Our northeast Iowa customer had single-phase 200-amp service, standard for rural buildings, so single-phase 220V was the obvious answer. Some heavy-duty commercial lifts above 15K are three-phase only, but for the two-post he was buying, single-phase covered him with room to spare. If a salesman quotes you three-phase for a home shop, ask him why. The usual answer is that he does not have single-phase in stock.

Branch two: 20-amp or 30-amp dedicated circuit

Auto lift motors typically draw 15 to 22 amps at 220V during a full lift cycle. That fits a 20-amp circuit on paper, but we always spec a 30-amp dedicated circuit anyway. The reason is inrush current at motor start, which can spike well past the running draw and trip a 20-amp breaker on a cold morning. Our northeast Iowa customer ran a 30-amp circuit on 10-gauge wire from his main panel to a disconnect near the lift, and he has not tripped a breaker in eighteen months. If your electrician wants to save you money with a 20-amp circuit, ask him whether he wants to come back out for a warranty call in January. The answer is always no.

Branch three: wire gauge and distance

The wire gauge for an auto lift 30-amp circuit is 10 AWG copper for runs under 100 feet, 8 AWG for longer runs. Aluminum is acceptable but goes one size larger. Our northeast Iowa shop had a 65-foot run from the main panel to the lift disconnect, so 10 AWG copper was correct. Longer runs get more expensive quickly, which is why we always ask about panel distance early in the decision tree. If your panel is 200 feet from the lift bay, add a subpanel closer to the lift and run a heavier feeder to the subpanel; that saves both wire and voltage drop. Voltage drop is the silent killer of lift motors — a motor fed 208V instead of 220V runs hot and dies early.

Branch four: disconnect location and lockout

Every auto lift needs a lockable disconnect within sight of the operator, per most local codes. Our northeast Iowa customer mounted a 30-amp lockable disconnect on the wall about 5 feet from the motor column, at shoulder height. That way he can lock the lift out during service work and nobody else in the shop can bump the up-button. This is not optional for a real shop. A lift with a live power feed and no disconnect is a service accident waiting to happen. If you are grandfathering an old lift into a new bay, add a disconnect at the same time you re-anchor. It is cheap and it saves at least one bad day per year.

Branch five: grounding and bonding

An auto lift column is metal and shares a ground path with the vehicle body when a car sits on the arms. Proper grounding of the power feed matters more here than for a stationary tool. Bond the lift chassis to the ground rod at the panel through the equipment ground conductor of the feeder, and check continuity with a meter before you power the lift up. Our northeast Iowa customer did this before first cycle and again after his slab settled a month later. A loose ground causes intermittent motor trips and can, in rare cases, put a shock potential on the arms when you touch a car and the column at once. Branch six: convenience power at the lift

Every auto lift bay needs at least two convenience outlets nearby: one near the motor column for a work light or a diagnostic scanner and one at chest height on the wall for cordless-tool chargers and shop radios. Our northeast Iowa customer added a quad receptacle on the wall opposite the lift for four charger slots and a small parts washer. Convenience power is not part of the lift circuit — put it on a separate 20-amp branch so a nuisance trip at the tool charger does not take the lift out. Small detail, but every shop we build learns this the hard way at least once.

Branch seven: verify before first cycle

Before you cycle a new auto lift for the first time, run four checks: voltage at the motor with the lift powered and the up-button pressed for two seconds, amperage draw during a no-load full-rise, ground continuity from the column to the panel, and disconnect operation. Our northeast Iowa customer ran all four with a clamp meter and a multimeter before he ever put a car on the lift. Voltage held at 218V under load, amperage peaked at 19A, ground read clean, and the disconnect killed the motor mid-cycle as expected. That thirty-minute check before first use is the difference between an electrical problem you catch in the shop and one you catch with a customer’s car in the air. Do the check.
