Everyone remembers to check hydraulic fluid or listen for a chain rattling on the way up, but almost nobody pulls a meter on the power unit’s ground path. We’ve walked into shops where a lift has been running for a decade without anyone ever confirming the frame is properly grounded. It’s not glamorous work, but a lift grounding check is cheap insurance against a shock hazard that could put a technician in the hospital or worse.

Why a Lift Grounding Check Actually Matters

Every hydraulic lift with an electric power unit is a piece of shop equipment sitting in a wet, oily, sometimes cramped environment, and that combination is exactly why grounding matters so much. If a motor winding shorts internally, a properly grounded frame gives that fault current a safe path back to the panel, which trips the breaker instantly instead of energizing the lift’s metal frame. Without that ground path, the entire lift column, the arms, even the concrete anchor bolts in some cases, can become live. A technician leaning against the post while reaching for a wrench has no idea anything is wrong until it’s too late.

We’ve tested lifts in older Iowa buildings where the outlet the power unit was plugged into wasn’t even wired with a proper ground conductor to begin with, just a two-prong adapter jammed into a three-prong plug. That’s a building wiring problem as much as a lift problem, but it’s exactly the kind of thing a lift grounding check catches before it becomes a lawsuit. It takes a few minutes with a multimeter and it should be part of every install and every annual inspection we do.

What We Actually Test During a Lift Grounding Check

A proper lift grounding check starts at the outlet or disconnect feeding the power unit. We verify the ground conductor is actually continuous back to the panel, not just present at the receptacle, because a lot of older buildings have ground wires that were nicked, corroded, or simply never connected upstream. From there we check continuity between the power unit housing and the lift’s frame or base plate, since some units are bolted on with painted surfaces or gaskets that can actually insulate the housing from the frame it’s supposed to be grounding.

We also look at the bonding between separate lift components, columns, cross beams, and the concrete anchors themselves in ground-level or in-ground applications. If any section relies on a coat of paint or a rusted bolt for its electrical connection, that’s a failure point waiting to happen. On four-post and scissor lifts with multiple motors or auxiliary power units, we check each one independently rather than assuming that if one is grounded, they all are. It only takes one missed connection to leave a shock hazard live somewhere on the equipment.

Common Grounding Failures We Find in the Field

The most common issue we run into is a missing or damaged ground pin on the power cord itself, often from someone cutting a cord short to reroute it through conduit and forgetting to reconnect the ground wire correctly. We also find GFCI outlets that were installed for a completely different reason, maybe a code requirement for wet locations, that trip constantly because the lift’s power unit draws a brief surge on startup, so someone bypasses the GFCI with a straight connection and the grounding gets sacrificed in the process.

Corrosion is another big one, especially in shops that get road salt tracked in all winter here in Iowa. Ground connections at junction boxes and conduit fittings corrode quietly for years, and resistance climbs slowly enough that nothing seems wrong until a fault actually happens and the breaker doesn’t trip fast enough. We’ve also found lifts where a previous installer used the ground screw as a convenient mounting point for a cable clamp or bracket, which loosens the actual ground connection every time that hardware gets touched. None of these things show up unless someone is specifically looking for them during a lift grounding check.

How a Grounding Check Fits Into Regular Lift Maintenance

A grounding check isn’t a standalone task, it belongs inside a broader maintenance routine that covers cables, hydraulic lines, anchor bolts, and safety locks. We fold it into the electrical portion of every service call because the same tools and the same few minutes it takes to check a breaker panel or motor connections work perfectly well for verifying ground continuity too. If you’re already following a lift maintenance schedule, grounding should be one of the line items, not an afterthought only handled when something trips a breaker.

Shops that run lifts daily should have this checked at least annually, and more often if the building has a history of moisture intrusion, flooding, or if the power unit has ever been swapped or rewired by someone other than a licensed electrician. We treat it the same way we treat a monthly lift safety check, small and quick individually, but cumulative in the protection it provides over years of daily use.

Grounding Checks During Used Lift Purchases

If you’re buying a used lift, grounding should absolutely be on your list, and it’s one of the items that’s easy to skip because it isn’t visible just standing there looking at the equipment. We’ve inspected used lifts for shops that were about to buy where the power unit had been rewired at some point with a ground wire simply capped off and left unconnected, likely because it was inconvenient during a repair years earlier. That’s the kind of hidden problem a lift grounding check is designed to catch, and it’s exactly why we recommend pairing it with a full used lift inspection before anyone signs a check.

A seller who has never had grounding tested isn’t necessarily hiding anything, most of the time it’s just been overlooked the same way it gets overlooked everywhere else. But you’re the one who inherits that risk once the lift is installed in your bay, so it’s worth the extra hour to verify before you’re the one standing next to it every day.

Tools and Steps for a DIY Grounding Check

If you want to do a basic lift grounding check yourself before calling in a professional, start with the power disconnected and use a multimeter set to continuity or low-resistance mode. Check resistance between the power unit housing and a known good ground, then check resistance between the lift frame and the same ground point. You’re looking for very low resistance, close to zero ohms, at every connection point. Any reading in the ohms range or higher suggests a poor connection somewhere in that path that needs tracing.

Visually inspect every ground wire connection you can access, at the outlet, at the power unit terminal, and at any junction boxes along the way, looking for corrosion, looseness, or wires that were nicked during installation. If you find anything questionable, or if your multimeter readings don’t make sense, that’s the point to bring in a licensed electrician or give us a call rather than guessing. Grounding issues aren’t something to leave partially resolved, given what’s at stake if a fault does eventually occur.

When to Call In a Professional

Some grounding issues are simple enough for a shop owner comfortable with a multimeter to handle, but plenty aren’t, especially anything involving the building’s actual electrical panel or wiring behind walls. If your lift grounding check turns up a problem at the outlet or upstream of it, that’s electrician territory, not something to patch with a jumper wire or an adapter plug. We can identify the problem during an inspection, but we’ll always point you to a licensed electrician for panel-level work since that’s outside what a lift technician should be doing.

If the issue is isolated to the power unit or lift frame itself, that’s exactly the kind of thing we handle directly, whether it’s a part that needs replacing or a connection that needs to be redone properly. Either way, don’t put the lift back into daily use until the grounding path checks out clean. It’s a small piece of the whole system, but it’s the piece standing between a normal repair job and a serious injury.
