A mobile mechanic working out of Ankeny called us last spring with a question we hear more often than you would think: if he bought an auto lift for the rented bay he was moving into, what would it be worth in five years when he either outgrew it or hung up the wrenches? He was doing a lot of transmission service — fluid exchanges, valve body work, the occasional full R&R on a front-wheel-drive unit — and he needed height, not just capacity. But he also needed to know he was not throwing money down a hole. We walked the building with him, priced two options, and then spent most of the conversation on resale, because that is the part nobody talks about honestly. Here is what we told him and what actually happened.

The Ankeny Bay: What He Was Working With
The building was a leased two-bay on the industrial edge of Ankeny, the kind of steel structure that went up in the early 2000s and has been rented to four different trades since. Clear height under the truss was a hair over thirteen feet. The slab was original, five inches nominal, and when we cored a test spot near the intended column location we got five and a quarter inches of reasonably dense concrete over compacted fill. That is workable for a 10,000 lb two-post, and it is right at the line where we start asking questions instead of just quoting.
His work mix mattered more than the ceiling. Transmission service means you are under the vehicle with a jack, a cradle, and sometimes a second person, and you want the pan at chest height rather than forehead height. That pushes you toward a taller column and a full rise, and it argues against the mid-rise and portable options he had been browsing online. We also flagged the lease itself: he had three years left with a renewal option, and the landlord had never had a hole drilled in that floor. Any conversation about resale value on this equipment starts with whether you are legally allowed to remove it, and that is a paragraph in the lease, not a spec sheet.
Why Transmission Work Changes the Spec
General maintenance forgives a lot. Oil changes, brakes, tires, exhaust — you can do all of that on a shorter column with a modest rise and never feel cheated. Transmission service does not forgive. You are fighting a heavy, awkward assembly in a tight tunnel, often with a bellhousing bolt you can only reach at one specific angle, and every inch of rise you gave up shows up as a sore neck by Thursday. When we spec a lift for a driveline-heavy shop we push for maximum rise first and worry about capacity second, because passenger cars rarely test the capacity of a 10,000 lb machine.
The other transmission-specific detail is arm geometry. Front-wheel-drive units come out downward and forward, which means you want the front arms swung well clear of the drop path and the rear arms carrying more of the load. Asymmetric two-post designs handle this well, and they also let you open the doors, which matters when you are climbing in and out to cycle the shifter. We steered him toward an asymmetric arrangement with three-stage front arms and a screw-pad setup he could top with a stack of adapters. That configuration also happens to be the single most liquid resale spec in central Iowa, which was a nice coincidence rather than an accident.
What an Auto Lift Actually Resells For
Here is the honest math. A used two-post from a recognized commercial brand, in working order, with legible data plates and both cables intact, generally clears somewhere in the neighborhood of forty to sixty percent of its current new price when sold privately in Iowa. A no-name import with no parts pipeline behind it clears far less, sometimes ten or fifteen percent, and often sits unsold for months on marketplace listings. That gap is the entire argument for buying a brand we can still get parts for. Depreciation on a good auto lift looks more like a work truck than a laptop.
Three things move the number more than anything else. First, brand and parts availability — a Rotary SPO-series column or a Challenger CL10 sells itself because the buyer knows a cable, a cylinder, or a latch dog is a phone call away. Second, documentation. If you kept the install paperwork, the annual inspection records, and the original manual, buyers stop haggling. Third, whether the seller can offer removal and reinstallation. A machine still bolted to the floor with no plan for getting it out is worth meaningfully less than the same machine on a pallet with the anchors already broken loose and the columns bagged.
The Trade-In Path Versus the Private Sale
Not every exit is a Craigslist ad. We regularly take equipment in on trade when a shop steps up in capacity, and for a lot of owners that path nets more real money than a private sale even at a lower headline number. The reason is friction. A private sale means fielding tire-kickers, arranging a rigging truck, worrying about whether the buyer’s slab is adequate, and eating the liability if something goes sideways during removal. Trade-in collapses all of that into a line item on the new invoice.
What we can offer on a trade depends on condition in a pretty predictable way. Columns and carriages are the durable core; if they are straight and the welds are sound, we can refurbish almost everything else. Cables, sheaves, latch assemblies, and hydraulic seals are consumables from our perspective. Rust at the base plates and bent arms are the two red flags that pull an offer down fast, because base plate corrosion is a structural question and bent arms usually mean somebody loaded it wrong more than once. A shop in the Des Moines metro traded us a fifteen-year-old asymmetric unit last year, and because it had been greased and inspected on schedule, the trade credit covered a meaningful slice of a new 12,000 lb machine.
Anchors, Slabs, and the Removal Question
Nobody thinks about removal on install day, and that is exactly when the decisions get made. Anchor bolts, hole placement, and whether the installer used the manufacturer’s specified anchor pattern all determine how ugly the extraction is. Done right, pulling a two-post means cutting the anchors flush, grinding the stubs, patching six or eight holes with a structural repair mortar, and walking away with a floor a landlord will accept. Done wrong — oversized holes, epoxy poured into voids, anchors set too close to a control joint — the patch job turns into a saw-cut and pour.
For the Ankeny job, the lease language required the floor be restored to a condition free of protrusions and trip hazards. We placed the columns to keep every anchor at least the specified distance from the nearest joint and edge, documented the layout with photos, and gave him a copy. Small thing, but when he eventually leaves that building, he hands the landlord a photo set and a patch invoice instead of an argument. That documentation is also part of what makes the equipment resellable: a buyer who can see the original layout and the torque specs used has far fewer reasons to walk away. Preserving value in an auto lift is mostly a paperwork discipline.
Maintenance That Protects the Number
The maintenance that keeps a machine safe is nearly identical to the maintenance that keeps it worth money, which makes this the easiest recommendation we give. Cables get inspected for broken wires, corrosion, and equalization at least annually, and they get replaced on condition rather than on a calendar. Latch assemblies get cleaned and lubricated so they engage crisply — a lift that clunks unevenly into its locks reads as neglected to any experienced buyer, even if the cause is a dry pivot. Carriage slide blocks wear and are cheap to replace; ignoring them lets the carriage chew into the column, which is not cheap at all.
Hydraulics are the other half. Fluid should be clean and at level, the power unit should not be weeping at the fittings, and the cylinder should hold position without creeping. A slow drift down is almost always a seal or a check valve, both of which we stock, and both of which cost a fraction of what the drift costs you at resale time. We tell every customer to keep a one-page log — date, what was inspected, what was replaced. Five years later that page is the difference between a buyer offering your asking price and a buyer offering sixty percent of it. He bought the taller asymmetric two-post, we installed it in a single day, and eighteen months later he expanded into the adjacent bay and added a second unit rather than replacing the first. That is the outcome we push for: buy once at the right spec, and the resale conversation becomes optional instead of forced. He never sold anything, but he also never spent money correcting a mistake, which is the same dollars in a different pocket. Had he bought the cheapest thing shipping from a container yard, he would have been replacing it inside two years and eating the removal cost.
