An overlanding builder in east-central Iowa called us about an auto lift because his wheel bearings had turned into a monthly appointment. He runs a heavily modified three-quarter-ton diesel with 37-inch tires, a full skid plate array, and enough weight in the bed to make any bearing failure feel earned. He wanted a lift that would let him service bearings quickly, store the truck safely between trips, and satisfy his insurance carrier, who had been asking about ALI Gold certification on his home shop. This case study walks through what we spec’d, why, and how the first year of ownership played out.

The Rig and the Problem

The customer’s truck started life as a stock crew-cab diesel and evolved over five years into a full expedition build. Bumpers, winch, roof-top tent, drawer system, dual batteries, onboard air, a water tank, and a set of 37s on aftermarket beadlocks. Curb weight was north of 9,500 pounds fully loaded. He was running the truck hard — two big western trips a year plus regular trail weekends in Missouri and southern Illinois — and the front wheel bearings were showing wear at intervals a stock truck would never see.

He had been servicing bearings on jack stands in a cold pole barn using a floor jack and a lot of profanity. Each side was a three- to four-hour job, and by the second bearing he was already exhausted. He came to us with a simple ask: he wanted a lift that would raise the whole truck, let him pull both front wheels at once, service the bearings comfortably, and store the truck up in the air between trips so he could work on skid plates or the transfer case underneath. That is a specific set of requirements, and it pointed us toward a specific configuration.

Why We Went Four-Post for This Build

The obvious first question with any lift buyer is two-post versus four-post. For an overlanding rig at 9,500-plus pounds with a full skid plate array underneath, four-post was the clear call. The reasoning has three parts. First, capacity: a professional-grade four-post auto lift in the 12,000 to 14,000-pound class handles his fully loaded weight without breathing hard, whereas a 10,000-pound two-post is at its limit and a 12,000-pound two-post starts asking hard questions about arm restraints and pad geometry with the skid plates in the way.

Second, storage: he wanted to leave the truck up in the air between trips so he could work under it without setting up jack stands every time. Four-post is designed for that use case, two-post is not. Third, safety on wheel-off work: a four-post with a set of rolling jacks lets him lift the truck onto the runways, then use the rolling jacks to unweight the front axle for bearing service, all while the primary lift is fully engaged in its mechanical locks. That is a two-stage safety redundancy you do not get on a two-post. We spec’d a 14,000-pound ALI Gold four-post with two rolling bridge jacks, and it has been the right platform from day one.

ALI Gold Certification: Why the Insurance Carrier Cares

ALI Gold is the certification level for automotive lifts issued through the Automotive Lift Institute’s third-party testing program. It means the lift has been physically tested for capacity, safety mechanisms, cycle life, and structural integrity by an independent lab, not just self-certified by the manufacturer. For a professional shop, ALI Gold is often required by state or federal safety inspectors and by commercial insurance carriers. For a home shop, it is optional in most states, but a growing number of homeowner-insurance carriers are asking about it when a shop is on the same property as a residence and used for anything more than casual maintenance.

Our east-central Iowa customer had run into exactly that question. His insurance renewal came back with a note asking whether his shop equipment was ALI-certified. He called them, they said yes, they were now requiring third-party certification on any lift used on-site, and they gave him ninety days to comply. That timeline is what triggered the lift purchase. Wheel Bearing Service on a Four-Post with Rolling Jacks

The service workflow on the finished install is dramatically better than the pole-barn jack stand routine. He drives the truck onto the runways, raises to comfortable working height, engages the mechanical locks, and walks around to inspect. If he is doing a wheel bearing job, he rolls a bridge jack over the front cross member, engages it under the front axle housing, lifts to unweight the front tires, and now both front wheels are off the runways with the truck fully supported by the primary lift plus the rolling jack.

He pulls both wheels, both calipers, both rotors, and works on both sides at once. That parallelism is the biggest time win. On jack stands he was serialized — one side, then the other, packing bearings in between. On the four-post with rolling jacks he is doing both sides in parallel with the parts spread out on a bench at working height. A job that used to take a full Saturday now takes about ninety minutes. He has done bearings four times since the lift went in, and the last service was down to just over an hour because he had the workflow dialed. The auto lift did not just save time. It changed the nature of the job.

Storage Between Trips: Working Underneath Without a Second Setup

The secondary use case for this platform is storage. Between trips he leaves the truck up in the air at a comfortable underhood height, which lets him work on skid plates, transfer case service, driveline U-joints, and exhaust modifications without any additional setup. He treats the shop as a permanent workspace with the truck as a semi-permanent occupant, rather than a bay he has to clear for each project. That single change has made his build velocity noticeably higher — he can knock out a two-hour project on a random weeknight without going through the mental overhead of jacking, stanting, and unstanting the truck.

The one caveat with long-term storage on a four-post is tire flat-spotting. If you leave a heavy truck sitting on the runways for months, the tires will develop a flat spot at the contact patch. His solution has been to rest the truck on the rolling jacks with the tires unweighted whenever it is going to sit for more than two weeks. That is a small operational habit that costs nothing and eliminates the flat-spot problem entirely. It is the kind of usage tip that comes from doing this for fifteen years, not from reading a manufacturer’s manual. Our other 4-post storage guide covers the details.

The Install: One Day, Four Anchors Per Column

The install was cleaner than most because he had built the shop with the lift in mind. Six-inch slab, rebar mat, sixteen-foot ceilings, dedicated 220-volt circuit already in place. We did the whole install in a single day. Runways bolted together on the ground, columns plumbed and shimmed, four anchor bolts per column set into a fresh set of holes drilled with a rotary hammer, cables strung and adjusted, hydraulics filled and purged, safety locks tested at every position, and rolling jacks assembled and tested empty and loaded.

The one wrinkle was the 220-volt circuit. His electrician had run the wire but not yet installed the disconnect box, so we finished that piece ourselves before we could test cycle the lift under power. That added an hour but nothing more. Total on-site time was about ten hours including lunch. He drove the truck onto the runways that same evening. First real service job — a full fluid rotation and a set of front wheel bearings — happened that weekend. The auto lift has been in continuous service for a full year now with zero mechanical issues and one routine hydraulic top-off.

What This Case Study Means for Other Overland Builders

Weight your capacity spec against your fully-loaded curb weight, not your empty weight. Pick four-post if you are going to store between trips and do wheel-off work regularly — rolling jacks make it a real service platform, not just a parking rack. Insist on ALI Gold certification even if your insurance carrier has not asked yet, because they will eventually. And build your shop with the lift in mind, not around a lift you already have.
