Choosing between an overhead and a baseplate auto lift comes down to numbers on a tape measure, not brand loyalty, and we learned that again on a job for a third-generation family garage northwest of Sioux City. The owner’s grandfather poured the original slab in the 1960s, his father added the back bay in the 1990s, and now the grandson is trying to fit modern equipment under a ceiling that was never designed for it. Every measurement mattered: truss height, header depth, door track clearance, slab thickness, and the location of the old floor drain. The Ceiling Measurement That Decides Everything

The first number we take is not the ceiling peak. It is the lowest obstruction in the swing path of the columns, which in most older Iowa garages is either a sagging truss chord, a run of conduit, or the top of a sectional door track when the door is fully open. In that Sioux City building the trusses measured 11 feet 8 inches to the bottom chord at the low point, but the door track at full open sat at 10 feet 4 inches — and the track ran directly through where the bay needed to be. That single measurement eliminated a standard overhead configuration, which typically needs 12 feet of clear height for a 10,000 lb two-post with a full-height crossbar.

Overhead models put the equalization cables and the shutoff bar in a beam spanning the columns, usually somewhere between 11 feet 6 inches and 12 feet 6 inches depending on model and column height. Short-column overhead versions exist and drop that to roughly 11 feet, but they also cut maximum rise, which matters when you are pulling a transmission out of a crew cab. Baseplate designs move the cables and hydraulic lines into a low channel across the floor, so the only vertical requirement is the column itself plus a few inches — typically 11 feet or less, sometimes as low as 10 feet 6 inches. For that shop, baseplate was the only honest answer, and we said so before quoting anything.

Slab Thickness, Anchors, and the Iowa Freeze Line

Concrete is the second gate. Nearly every two-post on the market calls for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most manufacturers want that measured as continuous, uncracked, reinforced slab extending at least 12 inches past each column base. The Sioux City building had two different pours: a 1960s section that cored at just over five inches, and a 1990s addition that cored at three and a half with visible cold joints. We put the equipment on the older pad, which surprised the owner until we showed him the core samples side by side.

When the slab is not adequate, the fix is a footing pad — typically a saw-cut rectangle roughly four feet by four feet by twelve inches deep per column, tied with rebar and given a full 28-day cure before anchors go in. In Iowa, we also pay attention to whether the slab floats over frost-heaved fill near an overhead door. We have seen a perfectly good auto lift installation go out of plumb over two winters because the pad near the door lifted a quarter inch each spring. Anchor selection matters too: most manufacturers specify a 3/4-inch wedge anchor with a minimum embedment around 3 1/4 inches, torqued to spec and re-checked after the first month of use. Skipping that re-torque is one of the most common causes of column movement we find on service calls.

Why Differential Service Changed the Layout

This shop makes a real share of its revenue on rear differential fluid service for farm trucks, three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups that come in caked with dust and road salt. That workflow has specific requirements. The tech needs to stand under the pumpkin with a fluid extractor, a drain pan, and enough elbow room to break a stubborn cover bolt without banging a knuckle on a column. Baseplate designs actually help here because there is no overhead beam to obstruct a shop crane or a long breaker bar swing when the truck is at full height.

The tradeoff is the floor channel. On a baseplate model the cable and hose channel sits about an inch and a half proud of the slab, and a rolling drain pan hits it. We solved that by orienting the bay so the channel runs behind the rear axle position for a standard-length pickup rather than under the differential, and by recessing the channel into a shallow saw-cut. That takes an extra half day of install labor and it is worth every minute in a shop that does the same job twelve times a week. Column Spacing, Arm Geometry, and Wide Trucks

Drive-through clearance is where a lot of shops get burned. A standard-width two-post gives roughly 98 to 100 inches between columns; a wide version pushes that to about 110 to 112 inches. On paper a dually fits either. In practice, once you add a tech walking alongside with a transmission jack, the standard width becomes a daily annoyance. We measured the widest regular customer vehicle at that Sioux City shop — a dual rear wheel one-ton with mirrors folded at 96 inches — and went wide.

Arm geometry deserves the same scrutiny. Symmetric configurations place the columns directly across from each other and split the vehicle roughly 50/50, which suits trucks and vans with long wheelbases. Asymmetric configurations rotate the columns about 30 degrees and shift the vehicle rearward so the doors clear the columns, which suits cars. Most modern units from Rotary and Challenger offer a three-stage front arm and a two-stage rear, giving a usable pickup range from roughly 22 inches to over 70 inches of reach. For a shop that sees both a Civic and an F-350 in the same afternoon, we generally recommend an asymmetric-capable unit with three-stage arms front and rear. Rise height matters too: most 10,000 lb units top out near 72 to 74 inches of pad height, which puts the frame rail of a lifted truck close to that low truss chord we measured at the start.

Power, Plumbing, and the 220V Question

We get asked constantly whether 220V is required. For most commercial two-post units the answer is effectively yes — the standard power unit is a 2 or 3 HP motor available in single-phase 208-230V or three-phase, and the single-phase version typically pulls a 25 to 30 amp circuit. There are 110V options on lighter-duty and home-garage equipment, and they work, but they lift slower and they trip breakers when the pump is cold and the hydraulic fluid is thick, which in an unheated Iowa shop in January is most mornings.

Our standard recommendation for a commercial bay is a dedicated 230V single-phase circuit with a disconnect within sight of the power unit, sized per the manufacturer’s plate. We run the conduit before the columns go up, because chasing wire around a set-up unit costs everyone time. On the hydraulic side, factory hoses arrive pre-cut for standard column spacing; if you widen the bay or route hoses through a floor channel, you may need longer lines, and we would rather order them with the equipment than three days into an install. Fluid choice matters in cold buildings too — a 32-weight hydraulic oil or an ISO 32 AW behaves far better at 20 degrees than a heavier grade, and it will make a cold-start auto lift feel like a different machine. Comparing the Real Cost of Each Auto Lift Configuration

Equipment price between overhead and baseplate versions of the same model is usually close — often within a few hundred dollars either way, with baseplate sometimes carrying a small premium because of the channel hardware. The real cost difference shows up in the building. If your ceiling is tall enough for overhead, that is almost always the cleaner install: nothing on the floor, simpler cable routing, and a shutoff bar that protects the roof of a tall vehicle automatically. If your ceiling is short, a baseplate unit saves you from either raising a roof or buying a lower-capacity machine you will outgrow.

For budgeting, a quality 10,000 lb commercial two-post with professional installation generally lands in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on capacity, arm configuration, and whether concrete work is needed. Footing pads add meaningful cost and a month of cure time to the schedule. Electrical service, if you are running a new circuit from a distant panel, can add more than people expect. We give clients a line-item picture up front so there are no surprises at the end. The wrong way to buy an auto lift is to shop the sticker price and discover the concrete bill afterward — we would rather tell you the whole number in February than surprise you in April.

What We Actually Installed and How It Runs

That Sioux City shop ended up with a wide baseplate two-post rated at 10,000 lb, asymmetric-capable arms, a recessed floor channel, and a dedicated 230V circuit. Total clear height needed came in under 10 feet 10 inches, which cleared the door track with room to spare. We poured no new concrete because the original 1960s pad tested well, and we re-torqued anchors at the 30-day mark during a follow-up visit. Rise to full height takes about 45 seconds, which is normal for a 2 HP single-phase unit.

A year in, the differential work goes faster than it did on the old drive-on ramps, and the shop added a second bay for tire and brake work. That is usually how it goes: once the equipment fits the building instead of fighting it, throughput climbs on its own.
