The mechanical difference between an overhead and a baseplate two-post is where the equalizer bar sits. Overhead: a horizontal beam between the tops of the columns holds the hydraulic and cable equalizer, and the safety cut-off is a bar the vehicle hood contacts if it goes too high. Baseplate: the equalizer runs across the floor between the column bases and the hoses come up through the columns, leaving the ceiling clear. Overhead is the more common choice for standard-height home garages because it is simpler to run cables and the ceiling clearance is not usually the bottleneck.

Baseplate is the right call in three specific situations: low ceilings, tall vehicles where the hood might contact the overhead bar at max lift, and shops that want to run a hoist or overhead crane in the same bay. For our Waterloo RV shop, they had 11-foot-6 ceilings and wanted to lift long tow rigs; baseplate solved both problems at once. We ran the hydraulic hoses through the primary column, tucked the equalizer cable inside a covered trough across the floor between the columns, and set the truck adapters for both light-duty pickups and medium-duty service trucks. Total installed cost came in around $7,200 including hardware upgrade to three-quarter-inch anchors and a heavier-duty baseplate cover than the standard. Nothing about the install was exotic.

The first month, and what they learned

The first month with auto lifts for home garage use in a working shop is a learning curve — even for guys who have used lifts elsewhere. They learned three things fast. One: the baseplate takes up floor space in a way that matters when you are walking around a lifted vehicle. They ended up marking the baseplate outline with yellow safety paint so nobody catches a toe on it during a service. Exhaust and driveline access, the actual win

Exhaust and driveline work is where a lift earns its money in a shop like this. On the ground, a full exhaust from cat-back on a diesel service truck is a 4-hour job with two people and a floor jack. On the baseplate lift with the truck at chest height, the same job is 90 minutes with one person, and the second person can start prepping the next vehicle. Driveline work — U-joint replacement, driveshaft removal for a transmission drop, transfer-case work on a 4WD — moves from an all-day, back-destroying grind to a controllable two-hour window.

Our Waterloo customer estimates their exhaust and driveline throughput went up threefold in the first six months on the lift, and their job-quality complaints went to essentially zero because the technicians could actually see what they were bolting together. Beyond exhaust and driveline, they picked up brake-line replacement, ABS sensor swaps, and rear-diff service on the same lift — all jobs that were painful or impossible on a floor jack. First time they tried to lift a fully loaded diesel service truck with the compressor cycling at the same time, the breaker tripped mid-lift and the truck stopped four feet off the ground.

Nobody was in danger — the safety locks caught — but the crew had to lower the truck manually and rewire the shop before continuing. The fix was a dedicated 20-amp circuit for the lift and a separate 30-amp circuit for the compressor; a licensed electrician did the work in half a day for around $350. The lesson: dedicate a circuit to the lift. Every install manual says so, and every install our crew does confirms it in writing before we energize the pump. If your electrician is running a fresh circuit anyway, spend the extra $50 for 30-amp wire — it costs nothing to over-size and everything to under-size.

Where the ROI showed up in month twelve

At the twelve-month mark our Waterloo customer sat down with his sons and totaled up what the lift changed. Revenue: exhaust and driveline jobs went from about 8 a month to 18 a month, adding roughly $2,400 per month at their shop rate — call it $28,000 per year in additional throughput without any additional payroll. Cost: $7,200 install, $350 electrical fix, $60 in first-year fluid and filter maintenance, and about $180 in miscellaneous adapters they decided to add mid-year. Net first-year impact: about $20,000 in the good column against about $7,800 in the cost column. Payback: 4.2 months.

That is a genuinely fast payback, and it is honest because it is measured in dollars they actually collected, not hypothetical hours saved. The lift is a fixed cost that runs at zero incremental expense once installed; every additional job through it is nearly pure margin. What year two looks like for a small RV shop

Year two, they are adding a second bay.
