Plan the Service Area for Flow
A building can be structurally perfect and still work against you if the bays are laid out poorly. Good auto repair shop construction accounts for the path a car takes: it arrives, gets diagnosed, moves to a work bay, may visit a tire or alignment station, then leaves. We help arrange the bays to shorten the distance cars and technicians travel between those steps, keep a clear lane from the entrance to every bay, and position the parts room centrally. Size the Bays Right
Bay dimensions are set in the build, so get them right the first time. A standard service bay should run at least 12 to 14 feet wide and 24 to 30 feet deep so a vehicle sits on a lift with room to work both sides and walk the ends. Most shops plan three to six bays, and a drive-through bay is worth including when the site allows, since it makes long vehicles easy to move and keeps traffic flowing at peak hours. We advise on bay sizing so the lifts you want will fit the way you work. It is far cheaper to add a foot of width or depth on the blueprint than to discover after move-in that a raised truck leaves no room to swing a door or roll a transmission jack past it. Lighting, ventilation, and floor drainage are worth settling at this stage too, since all three are simple to build in and disruptive to add once the shop is finished and busy.
Get the Lift Requirements Into the Drawings
Lifts drive the hard requirements of auto repair shop construction, and each type has its own needs:
- Two-post lifts carry general repair with full underbody access. They demand a thick, level slab for anchoring and enough ceiling for the columns and a raised vehicle, often 12 feet or more. We spec Challenger, Rotary, and Forward two-post lifts. See our 2-post car lift guide.

Because lifts anchor into concrete, the slab thickness and cure must meet each manufacturer’s installation spec, and we hand your contractor those exact figures. Coordinate Power, Air, and Ceiling
Three utilities decide whether the finished shop performs, and all three are cheapest to handle during auto repair shop construction:
- Power. Lifts, a compressor, and diagnostic gear all draw current. We help your electrician size circuits and voltage for each machine with headroom to grow.
- Air. We plan lines to every bay from a right-sized compressor, with a drop at each station so hoses stay off the floor.
- Ceiling. We confirm clearances match the lifts before the roof structure is finalized, measuring to the lowest obstruction such as a door track, light fixture, or truss, not just the peak of the roof.
