Before you spend a weekend’s worth of money on an autolift garage, there are two components worth understanding better than the salesperson explaining them: the arm restraints and the safety cams. A weekend hobbyist in east-central Iowa emailed us last fall with a spreadsheet comparing six units on capacity and price, and not one column addressed either of those. He was planning to do exhaust work and driveline service — the two jobs where you push, pry, and hammer on a vehicle while it’s in the air — and the parts of the machine that keep it there hadn’t made his list. We rewrote his spreadsheet with him. Here’s the checklist that came out of it.

Check One: Are the Arm Restraints Automatic or Manual?
Arm restraints keep a swing arm from rotating out from under a lift point while a vehicle is in the air. On a good two-post they’re automatic — a spring-loaded gear engages a toothed ring at the arm pivot the moment the carriage leaves the floor, and disengages when the arms come back down and unload. On cheaper units they’re a manual pin or a lever you’re supposed to remember to set. Guess how often that gets remembered on a Saturday when you’re four beers into a brake job. Not that we recommend that combination, but we’ve seen the aftermath.
What to actually check before buying: pull the spec sheet and look for the phrase “automatic arm restraints” rather than just “arm restraints.” Then look at the mechanism itself in photos or in person. A robust design uses a hardened gear with deep teeth and a heavy spring. A weak one uses a shallow stamped plate that rounds off over a few hundred cycles. Ask whether replacement restraint gears are available as a service part — if the manufacturer doesn’t sell them individually, the arm is the service part, and that’s a several-hundred-dollar surprise five years in. For an autolift garage where the same person is both the technician and the safety officer, automatic restraints aren’t a luxury. They’re the component that covers you on the day you’re distracted.
Check Two: How the Safety Cams Sound, Feel, and Engage
Safety cams — the spring-loaded latches that drop into the lock ladder inside each column — are the mechanical backup to the hydraulics. Hydraulic systems fail slowly and rarely, but they do fail, and when one does the locks are the only thing between a two-ton vehicle and the floor. Every unit has them. They are not all equal.
Here’s what to evaluate. First, lock spacing: closer spacing, typically three to four inches, means you can set the vehicle at a comfortable working height instead of the nearest lock five inches away from where you wanted it. Second, engagement sound. A well-built lift makes a distinct, loud, metallic clack at every lock position, and you should hear both columns engage nearly simultaneously. If one column consistently lags, the carriages aren’t synchronized and that needs attention before it becomes a habit you ignore. Third, the release mechanism — single-point air release is the standard on quality units and lets you disengage both columns from one handle. Dual manual releases mean walking around the vehicle, and people take shortcuts. Fourth, look at whether the lock ladder is a welded plate or a bolt-on. Check Three: Arm Configuration for Exhaust and Driveline Work
The hobbyist who emailed us wanted to do exhaust and driveline work, and that changes which arm setup makes sense. Exhaust work means you’re under the center of the vehicle for long stretches with a cutoff wheel, a welder, and a hanger tool. Driveline work means dropping a shaft, which requires clearance directly beneath the transmission tailhousing and the differential yoke. Both jobs punish a lift with poorly placed columns or arms that intrude on the working area.
Asymmetric two-post designs rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use short front arms with long rear arms, which pushes the vehicle rearward and lets doors open past the column. Great for getting in and out of the cabin. Symmetric designs center the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms and give you a cleaner, more open underside — better for long exhaust runs and driveshaft work where you want nothing in your way. Many current models are true dual-purpose and let you configure either way. The other spec that matters here is minimum arm pad height. If the pads won’t get below about four inches, a lowered car or a sports car with side skirts becomes a game of wood blocks and prayer. Check Four: The Concrete and Anchor Question Nobody Wants to Hear
A two-post lift transfers everything through the base plates into your slab, and there’s no way around it. The general requirement across most brands is four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, fully cured, with some models wanting six inches at higher capacities. That’s not a suggestion from a lawyer — it’s the number at which the wedge anchors develop their rated pullout strength.
What we run into constantly in east-central Iowa is older pole buildings and detached garages with three-and-a-half-inch slabs poured over questionable base, sometimes with wire mesh that migrated to the bottom during the pour. The fix is a footing pad: saw-cut and remove a section under each column, dig down, and pour a properly reinforced pad tied into the surrounding slab. It’s a day of work and a modest expense compared to what happens if you skip it. Before you buy, do this: drill a small test hole in the area where each column will sit and measure actual thickness. Don’t trust the builder’s memory. Also check for radiant heat tubing or post-tension cables — hitting either with a rotary hammer is a very bad afternoon. If you’re planning an autolift garage into a new build, tell your concrete contractor before the pour and specify the pad locations. It costs almost nothing at that stage. Check Five: Ceiling, Overhead Bar, and the Truck You Don’t Own Yet
Overhead two-post lifts run a crossbar between the columns carrying the equalization cables and the shutoff bar. Floorplate models route everything through a channel in the floor instead. Both work. The choice depends on your building.
If your ceiling is under about eleven feet, a floorplate design gets you more usable lift height, at the cost of a raised channel you’ll roll a floor jack over forever. If you’ve got twelve feet or more, overhead is cleaner and the automatic shutoff bar is a genuine safety feature — it stops the lift before a roof rack meets a truss. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak: garage door tracks, opener rails, light fixtures, and sprinkler heads all count. Then think about the tallest vehicle you’ll ever put in the air. Most people buy for the car they drive now and regret it when a three-quarter-ton pickup shows up. A crew cab needs meaningfully more overhead room than a sedan, and if you plan to stand fully upright underneath a raised truck you need the math to work at maximum rise. We’d rather size an autolift garage for the truck you’ll buy in three years than sell you something you outgrow in two. Also verify your electrical: most residential-duty units want either 110V on a dedicated 20-amp circuit or 220V single-phase, and a shared circuit will cause nuisance stalling.
Check Six: Parts Availability and Who Answers the Phone
This is the checklist item that separates a good ten-year experience from a frustrating one, and it never appears on a spec sheet. Ask, before you buy: can I get a replacement arm restraint gear, a safety cam spring, a lock ladder, a lift cable, a cylinder seal kit, and a power unit for this specific model in five years? For Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side and BendPak and Atlas on the home side, the answer is generally yes, and we stock a lot of it.
For no-name imports sold through online marketplaces, the answer is frequently no. We get calls every month from people who bought an off-brand unit, blew a seal or snapped a cable, and discovered the importer no longer exists. Sometimes we can cross-reference a cylinder or fabricate a cable to length. Sometimes we can’t, and a functional lift becomes scrap because a fifty-dollar part isn’t available. The second half of the question is service: if something goes wrong, is there anyone within driving distance who will come look at it? The One-Page Version of the Checklist
Print this and take it shopping. One: automatic arm restraints, gear-and-spring type, with replacement gears available as a service part. Two: safety cams on both columns with three-to-four-inch lock spacing, audible engagement, and single-point air release. Three: arm configuration matched to your work — symmetric or dual-purpose for exhaust and driveline, low-profile pads if you own anything with ground clearance under five inches. Four: verified slab thickness by test drill, four inches of 3,000 PSI minimum, with a plan and a budget for footing pads if it comes up short.
Five: ceiling measured to the lowest obstruction, sized for the tallest vehicle you might own, with the overhead-versus-floorplate decision made on that measurement. Six: parts and service confirmed for the specific model, not the brand in general. Seven, and this is the one we’d add on top of his spreadsheet: a written install plan including power, anchor layout relative to control joints, and how the vehicle will approach the bay. An autolift garage is a permanent modification to a building, and the difference between one you love and one you tolerate is almost entirely decided in the two weeks before you order.
