He’d read an incident report from another Iowa municipality where a tech had been under a lift during a suspension job and the arms had drifted because a restraint pin hadn’t seated. Nobody was hurt but the report was widely circulated. When he called us his first question wasn’t about a new lift. Why Arm Restraints Matter for Suspension Work
Arm restraints are the mechanical stop that keeps a 2-post lift’s arms from swinging when a vehicle is raised. On modern lifts they’re spring-loaded pins that drop into a notched gear on the arm hub when weight lifts off the arm. When a vehicle is fully loaded on the pads, the arm is pinched against the gear and cannot move. When the vehicle is unloaded, including during a suspension job when the tech drops a shock and the vehicle weight shifts on the pads, arm restraint prevents the arm from swinging out from under the load point. Without restraints, or with worn restraints that don’t engage cleanly, a suspension job can end with an arm rotating and dropping the vehicle. It’s not common, but it’s the failure mode that shows up in incident reports. Autolift garage lifts sold today all have arm restraints. The question for a municipal fleet is whether existing lifts have restraints that still function correctly under load.
Safety-Cam Engagement Explained
Safety-cam locks are the primary mechanical hold that keeps a raised lift in position when hydraulic pressure isn’t holding it. The tech raises the lift to working height, then lowers it a couple inches until the safety-cam pawls engage into the column notches. From that point, if hydraulic pressure fails, the pawls hold the load. No drift, no drop. Every lift cycle in a properly operated autolift garage ends with the cam engaged before any work begins. Techs who leave lifts sitting on hydraulic pressure only, without engaging cams, are running with reduced safety margin. The pawl springs had failed and the pawls were sitting free rather than under spring tension, which is not a lift you want anyone under.

The autolift garage safety standards that matter for municipal fleets are ALI-Gold certification, ANSI ALCTV compliance, annual third-party inspection under ALI-ALI, and daily-check procedures signed by the tech at start of shift. All ALI-Gold lifts include safety-cams, arm restraints, secondary hydraulic overload valves, and mechanical load-holding features. ALI-Gold status is stamped on the lift’s serial plate and included in the shipping documentation. Third-party inspection annually verifies that each of these safety features still functions after a year of use. Daily-check procedures, printed on a laminated card at each lift, walk the tech through a five-minute verification before the first vehicle. Suspension Work at Full Height
Suspension and shock work at full lift height is one of the higher-load operations in a fleet garage because the tech is often applying significant torque to bolts and pulling on components while under the raised vehicle. That force can shift arm placement on the vehicle pads if the arms aren’t fully restrained. It can also test cam engagement if the vehicle rocks during a shock compression. Our recommendation for a Sioux City fleet doing regular suspension work is that every lift cycle ends with cam engagement, arms are checked for restraint before the tech goes under, and no unloaded suspension bolts are removed until the vehicle is stable on pads. These are procedure items, not equipment items, but the equipment has to support the procedure, which is why the unbadged import lift got replaced. Annual Inspection and Documentation
Iowa municipal fleets should have a certified ALI-ALI inspector on annual contract for lift inspection. The inspection covers cable condition on 4-posts, cylinder integrity, safety-cam engagement, arm restraint function, hydraulic system pressure and leaks, electrical safety, and anchor condition. The inspector signs a certification that goes into the fleet maintenance log. If the fleet manager can’t produce that certification during a state audit, the lift is effectively unusable until a fresh inspection.
