A car lift safety inspection is the cheapest hour you will ever spend on your shop, and it is the one piece of maintenance we see skipped more than any other. We are Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and between installs we spend a good chunk of every week crawling under two-post and four-post columns across the state with a flashlight, a torque wrench, and a set of feeler gauges. Most of what we find is small — a frayed cable strand, an anchor bolt three turns loose, a lock latch that clicks on one column and hesitates on the other. Small is exactly what you want to find. Small is what a real inspection is for, and small is what nobody catches by glancing at a lift on the way past it.

Why an annual inspection is not optional paperwork

ANSI/ALI ALOIM lays it out plainly: every vehicle lift in service should get a documented annual inspection by a qualified inspector, plus daily and monthly checks by the people who use it. Insurance carriers have started asking for that documentation. So have a lot of the fleet and dealership contracts our commercial customers bid on. But the paperwork angle is the least interesting reason to do it. The interesting reason is that lifts do not fail suddenly. They fail on a schedule you can read if you know where to look — cables stretch a predictable amount, lock latches wear at their pivot, hydraulic seals weep before they blow, and concrete around an anchor spalls long before the anchor pulls.

We have walked into shops where a lift had not been looked at in eleven years. Nothing dramatic had happened yet, which is exactly why nobody worried. Then you put a gauge on the equalizer cables and find one has stretched almost an inch more than its partner, meaning one column has been carrying load it was never meant to carry alone. That is not a maintenance item anymore, that is a load path problem. An annual car lift safety inspection catches the drift while it is still drift. Skip it long enough and you are not inspecting a lift, you are inspecting an incident.

Cables, sheaves, and the strands nobody sees

Cables are the first thing we go after on any two-post, because they are the component most likely to be quietly failing. We run a bare hand — glove off, carefully — along the full length of each cable looking for broken wires, kinks, birdcaging, and flat spots. ALI guidance says replace at six broken wires in one lay or three in one strand, but honestly, once we see any broken strands on a lift that is a decade old, we quote both cables. They wear as a set, and replacing one is how you end up back here in eight months.

Then we get on the sheaves. A grooved, dry, or seized sheave chews cable faster than any amount of load does, and we find seized ones constantly — the bearing gave up, the cable is now sawing across a stationary pulley, and the shop has no idea. We check groove wear with a gauge, spin every sheave by hand, and look at the overhead crossbar assembly on drive-through models where cable routing has the most direction changes. Locks, latches, and the sound they should make

The mechanical locks are what stand between a hydraulic failure and a dropped vehicle, so we test them functionally, not just visually. We run the lift up empty and listen. Both columns should click through their lock positions in the same rhythm at the same heights. A lag on one side means a worn lock dog, a stretched or misadjusted release cable, or a bent latch. Then we lower onto the locks at multiple heights and confirm the lift actually rests on steel rather than settling.

On four-post lifts we do the same thing with the lock ladders in each column and check that all four locks engage simultaneously — a runway that drops an inch on one corner before it catches is telling you the equalizer system is out of sync. We also look hard at the latch return springs, which are cheap, hidden, and responsible for a shocking number of service calls. A weak spring lets a latch hang in the released position without anyone noticing until the day the hydraulics let go. Every car lift safety inspection we run includes a slow cycle with the operator standing there, because the sound of a healthy lock set is something worth learning to recognize yourself.

Anchors, concrete, and column plumb

This is the section that catches Iowa shops off guard, because our slabs are all over the map. We see 3.5-inch pours under lifts rated for a 4-inch minimum, we see lifts anchored right at a control joint, and we see 1970s concrete that has no business holding a 12,000 lb two-post. So we start with a torque wrench on every anchor bolt to the manufacturer’s spec, and we count how many are actually installed — missing anchors are more common than you would believe.

Then we look at the concrete itself. Radial cracking out from an anchor, spalling under the base plate, or a base plate that has visibly lifted at one corner all mean the anchor is no longer doing its job even if the nut is tight. We put a level on both columns front-to-back and side-to-side, because a column leaning out of plumb loads the anchors in shear and tension instead of straight down. If a shop needs new anchors, epoxy, or a slab cut and repour, we would rather say so during a car lift safety inspection than get called out after something moved.

Hydraulics, hoses, and the power unit

A weeping cylinder rod seal is the classic finding. It looks like nothing — a damp ring, some grime stuck to the rod — but it means the seal is passing, and passing seals mean the lift will start to creep down under load. We check rod condition for pitting and scoring, inspect every hose for abrasion at the routing points and for the telltale hard, shiny spot where a hose has been rubbing a column for years, and look at fittings for the crust that says a slow leak has been evaporating there a long time.

At the power unit we check fluid level and condition (milky fluid means water, dark and burnt means it has been cooking), verify the motor is not drawing hot, and test the lowering valve and pressure relief. On older units we check whether anyone has adjusted the relief to compensate for a tired pump, which is a common field fix and a bad one. Cylinder and seal work is standard for us; a rebuild or replacement is almost always cheaper than a new lift, and we carry the parts. Arms, adapters, and the wear you cause daily

Arm restraints get abused. The gear teeth at the arm pivot wear down, the pin bends, or somebody welded something and now the restraint pin does not seat. We check each arm for free play in the pivot, confirm the restraint engages positively in every position, and look at the arm pads and screw pads for cracks, missing rubber, and threads that have been cross-loaded until they bind. A pad that will not stay put is how vehicles slide off arms.

We also inspect the accessory stack — truck adapters, frame extensions, drive-on ramps on four-posts, sliding jack trays — because those take the hardest hits and get the least attention. Bent adapter tubes, mushroomed pins, and jack trays with cracked welds all show up regularly. On home installations the wear pattern looks different: less cycles, but more storage-related loading, and often a lift that sat unused for two years and now has a stiff cylinder and dry sheaves.
