Four 4-post lifts, twelve vehicles stored, cars come off the lifts once or twice a year for exercise runs and occasional service. That low-cycle profile changes how an autolift garage inspection schedule should read. High-cycle commercial lifts see cables cycle hundreds of times per year; his cables cycle a dozen times per year. Both need inspection, but the wear pattern is different, and the cable-replacement interval isn’t the same across use profiles. The First-Year Ownership Story
The two new 4-posts we sold him, 9,000-pound drive-ons with caster kits, came in on freight in November. He offloaded with his own equipment and had them assembled by end of week two. Autolift Garage Cable Basics
A 4-post autolift garage moves the vehicle by hydraulic cylinder acting on cables that run over pulleys at the tops of the columns. The cables carry the load between the powered side and the driven side; if one fails, the safety cams engage and hold the load, but you don’t want to test that reliability. Cables are steel-wire rope constructed of multiple strands twisted together. Wear points are at the pulleys, at the sheave ends, and at any bend or crimp. Cables live inside the columns and runway ends, protected from most environmental exposure but still subject to atmospheric humidity in Iowa. Rust, broken strands, and reduced diameter are the three failure modes. Any of them means the cable set needs replacement. Cable Inspection Intervals
For a low-cycle storage autolift garage like our Iowa-Illinois corridor customer’s, we recommend an annual visual inspection plus a six-month spot-check at the pulley bends. For commercial shops running high cycles, quarterly inspection is the standard and monthly spot-checks are common. Our recommended inspection procedure: lower the lift fully, open the top-column covers, illuminate the cable at each pulley with a flashlight, look for broken strands or reduced diameter, look for rust bloom or corrosion, feel the cable for burrs or unevenness. Any single broken strand within one lay-length is an immediate replacement trigger. Any evidence of significant corrosion is also a replacement. Our customer’s older Challenger cables had one strand starting to fray on the driven-side pulley. That’s not immediate replacement per ALI guidance, but at ten-plus years and low cycles, he elected to replace preemptively rather than watch it monthly.
Cable Replacement: When and How
Cable replacement on a 4-post autolift garage isn’t a DIY job for most owners. It requires lift disassembly at the top-column covers, cable tensioning across pulleys, and careful synchronization of the cable set to make sure all four columns rise together. Our service technicians handle this in a half-day for a two-cable 4-post; four columns take a full day. Replacement cables should always be a matched set from the manufacturer or a certified equivalent. Mismatched cables cause runway skew and shorten the life of the replacement set. Tire Rotation on a 4-Post
Tire rotation on a 4-post autolift garage requires either rolling jacks or wheel-lift attachments to get the tires off the runway. Rolling jacks live under the runway and lift the vehicle by its frame, letting all four tires spin free. For a low-cycle storage operation, rolling jacks are the sensible add-on because they cover tire rotation, brake work, wheel-bearing service, and any other job that needs the wheels off the runway. Our customer had rolling jacks on all four of his 4-posts. Total tire rotation time on one of his cruisers is about 25 minutes end to end, much faster than pulling it into a shop and paying for the service. What We Learned After Twelve Months
After twelve months of ownership on the new lifts and inspection on the older lifts, three lessons stood out. Second, low-cycle storage lifts don’t wear the way commercial lifts do, but they still need the same inspection discipline.
