Building out an autolift garage in a farm shop in east-central Iowa usually starts the same way: somebody gets tired of laying on a creeper on cold concrete to pull rotors off a grain truck or a family pickup, and decides this is the winter they finally hang a lift. We get those calls every February and March, right after the first miserable brake job of the year. The good news is that a pole building or machine shed is often a better home for a lift than a subdivision garage — you generally have the height. The bad news is that height alone does not decide it. Door swing, truss layout, lighting, and where the overhead door tracks land all matter just as much, and they are far cheaper to sort out before you order than after.

Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak

The number one measurement mistake we see in an autolift garage project is measuring to the peak of the roof. On a pole building with scissor trusses or a gambrel profile, the center of the building may be fifteen feet up while the bottom chord of the truss sits at eleven and a half. The lift does not care about your peak. It cares about the lowest thing between the columns and the lowest thing above the vehicle when it is raised. So we ask people to walk out with a tape and a flashlight and write down four numbers: bottom of truss or purlin, bottom of any light fixture, bottom of the overhead door track and opener rail, and the height of any electrical conduit or gas line running across the ceiling.

Once you have those four numbers, the math is straightforward. A two-post lift with a twelve-foot overall column height needs roughly that plus a few inches of working room. A shorter column version, or a baseplate model that runs the crossover hose along the floor instead of overhead, can drop your requirement noticeably. For brake and rotor work specifically, you do not need to raise a truck to full height — you need the wheels at about chest level, which is often six feet of rise. We have set up plenty of shops with lower clearance where the customer simply accepts a rise limit and still gets everything they wanted out of the equipment.

Door swing, track travel, and the trap nobody checks

Overhead doors are the single most common surprise in an east-central Iowa shop. A standard sectional door does not go straight up — it curves back on horizontal tracks that hang below the ceiling and extend eight to ten feet into the building. If you set a lift column under that track path, the door will hit the column, the carriage, or the vehicle. We have been called out to move a freshly anchored lift more than once because nobody watched the door cycle with a tape in hand.

Do this before you order: open the door fully, then measure the lowest point of the door panels and the track, and measure how far into the building the tracks run. Mark that footprint on the floor with chalk. Your lift bay needs to live outside that chalk, or you need to convert to a high-lift or jackshaft door configuration. In many farm shops the fix is simply rotating the bay ninety degrees or shifting it toward the back wall. Also check the swing of any walk door, the position of your air compressor, and whether a raised vehicle blocks access to your welder or parts shelving. A lift that fits dimensionally but blocks half your shop is still the wrong layout, and we would rather redraw it on paper than move anchors later.

Concrete: the part you cannot fix later

Concrete is where an autolift garage plan either holds up or falls apart. Most two-post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb class want a minimum of four inches of cured concrete at 3,000 PSI, and honestly we prefer more. A lot of pole buildings in east-central Iowa were poured as a five- or six-inch slab with fiber mesh, which is great. Others got a four-inch pour over questionable fill, or have control joints and thin patches exactly where you want to anchor.

You can verify thickness by coring a small test hole or drilling in an inconspicuous spot and measuring depth with a wire. If you are unsure of the pour date or the mix, ask us — we will talk you through it rather than guess. When the existing slab is not adequate, the standard remedy is a footing pad: saw-cut the area under each column, dig out, and pour a reinforced pad tied to the anchor pattern. It is not glamorous work, but it is far cheaper than an anchor pulling loose under a loaded truck. Also confirm you are not anchoring within a few inches of a slab edge, expansion joint, or in-floor heat tubing. Radiant heat lines are common in newer Iowa shops and hitting one is a bad afternoon. Scan or photograph your tubing layout before the concrete goes in if you are still at the building stage.

Matching the lift to brake and rotor work

Brake service is a specific job with specific ergonomics, and it drives lift choice more than people expect. You want wheels off, calipers accessible, and room to swing a breaker bar on a seized caliper bracket bolt. That points toward a two-post lift, which leaves the wheels completely free, over a four-post drive-on where the wheels sit on runways. If your primary use is rotor swaps, pad slaps, and hub bearings, a two-post is the right answer nine times out of ten.

Within two-post lifts, you then choose between symmetric and asymmetric arm geometry, and between overhead and floorplate crossbeam. Asymmetric lets you rotate the vehicle slightly and open the doors, which matters if you also do interior work or need to reach a steering wheel to cycle the ignition. Symmetric handles long-wheelbase trucks better and is common in farm shops running duallies and three-quarter-ton pickups. On the crossbeam question, floorplate models are the answer when your ceiling is tight, though you learn to step over the plate. Add a good set of rolling jack trays or a tall transmission stand and your autolift garage becomes genuinely faster than the shop you used to haul trucks to.

Power, air, and lighting in a farm shop

Most single-phase two-post lifts run on 208-240V, and the power unit typically pulls a 30-amp circuit. In an older machine shed that means a dedicated run from the panel, not sharing a circuit with your welder. We ask customers to have an electrician confirm available capacity before the install date, because there is nothing more frustrating than a lift bolted down and ready with no live circuit to test it. If you only have 120V available, three-phase, or a generator setup, tell us early — there are power unit options for each and they need to be specified at order time.

Lighting deserves the same attention. When a truck goes up six feet in a shop with ceiling-mounted fixtures, the vehicle shades everything underneath it. The cheap fix is a couple of LED strip fixtures mounted on the columns or on the walls at about seven feet, aimed inward. Air lines matter too: run a drop within arm’s reach of the lift bay so you are not dragging fifty feet of hose to break loose lug nuts. Finally, plan drainage and floor slope. Farm trucks bring in mud, salt, and manure, and an autolift garage in Iowa gets wet in March. A little slope toward a door or floor drain keeps standing water off your column bases, which is exactly where rust starts eating anchors.

The pre-purchase checklist we actually use

Here is the short version we run through on the phone with almost every autolift garage caller. One: bottom-of-truss clearance, measured, not estimated. Two: overhead door track intrusion and lowest panel height. Three: slab thickness, age, and PSI if known. Four: distance from anchor points to any slab edge, joint, or in-floor heat. Five: column-to-column bay width and the clear space on each side for door swing on the vehicle. Six: heaviest vehicle you will ever put on it, plus twenty percent. Seven: electrical service, voltage, phase, and available amps.

Answer those seven and we can quote you accurately and tell you what fits. Skip them and you get a quote that changes after the truck shows up, which nobody enjoys. We also encourage people to think about the second lift they may want in five years. If you are pouring new concrete or framing a new pole building now, spending a little extra on slab thickness and a second dedicated circuit is dramatically cheaper than retrofitting. What installation day looks like in east-central Iowa
