Why Brake Work Drives the Whole Decision
Brake service is the single most common reason a hobbyist finally buys a lift, and it shapes the spec more than people expect. A rotor swap means you want the wheels hanging free, you want the caliper at chest height, and you want to be standing up while you fight a seized slide pin. That points hard toward a two-post rather than a four-post drive-on, because a four-post keeps the tires loaded on the runways unless you add a rolling jack bridge. We are not against four-posts — they are great for storage and for exhaust or transmission work — but if brakes and suspension are 80 percent of what you plan to do, a two-post is the honest answer.
The second thing brake work drives is how high you actually need to go. Most guys assume they need maximum lift height. In practice, for brake service you spend most of your time between chest and shoulder height, which means a shorter column can still work fine if your ceiling is tight. Where full height matters is exhaust and undercarriage work where you want to stand fully upright. We had a hobbyist near the Mississippi with 10-foot ceilings who was convinced he could not do it. He ended up on a low-ceiling two-post with an overhead-free design and has done dozens of brake and axle jobs since. The point is that your use case, not the brochure, sets the spec.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms, Explained Without the Sales Pitch
This is the question we get asked most and the one that gets answered worst online. A symmetric two-post has columns facing each other straight on, with front and rear arms of equal length, so the vehicle sits centered between the posts. An asymmetric lift rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and pairs shorter front arms with longer rear arms, which pushes the vehicle rearward and gives you room to open the doors without hitting a post.
For brake service specifically, asymmetric is usually the better choice in a home shop, because you are climbing in and out of the driver’s seat constantly to check pedal feel and bleed. Getting slapped by your own door for two years gets old. Where symmetric wins is with long-wheelbase trucks, dually pickups, and vans, where the balance point is farther back and you want equal-length arms to reach solid frame pickup points. Plenty of the shops we service in the corridor run one of each for exactly this reason. If your fleet is a daily driver sedan, a project car, and a half-ton pickup, we normally point you at asymmetric or a versymmetric-style design that splits the difference. Checklist Item One: Concrete Before Anything Else
Nothing kills an autolift garage project faster than concrete. Before you look at a single model, find out what you are anchoring into. A typical two-post rated at 9,000 to 10,000 pounds wants a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most manufacturers want more like four and a quarter inches with adequate cure time. Newer pole buildings around the corridor are often poured at four inches with fiber mesh, which is usually workable. Older farm shops and repurposed machine sheds are the wild card — we have seen everything from six-inch reinforced pads to three inches of concrete floated over dirt with no vapor barrier.
The practical test is simple: drill a test hole in the area where the columns will land and measure actual thickness, then check for control joints, cracks, and post footings within the anchor footprint. You need clean concrete a minimum distance from any joint or edge, and that distance is spelled out in the manufacturer’s installation manual. If the slab comes up short, you are not out of luck. Cutting and pouring a pair of engineered pads under the column locations is a routine fix and a lot cheaper than replacing an entire floor. We have done that on plenty of Iowa jobs. What you cannot do is anchor into thin, cracked, or unsupported concrete and hope. That is how columns walk, and it is the one shortcut we will not help anyone take.
Checklist Item Two: Ceiling Height and Column Style
Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. In a pole building, that is usually the bottom of a truss, a purlin, a light fixture, or a garage door track in the open position. Write that number down before you shop. A standard overhead two-post typically needs somewhere in the 11 to 12 foot range for the crossbar to clear, while floorplate models run the hydraulic line and equalization cable through a floor channel instead, so ceiling height stops being the limiting factor.
The tradeoff is real and we say it plainly: a floorplate design means a bump you walk over and roll tool carts across, and the channel needs to stay clean. Overhead models keep the floor clear but eat headroom and put a shutoff bar right where a tall antenna or roof rack wants to be. In the corridor, a lot of the buildings we work in were built with 12-foot sidewalls but trusses that drop to about 11 feet at the low point, which puts overhead models right on the edge. If your number is under 11 feet, look at low-ceiling two-post variants or a mid-rise scissor. If your garage door track is the problem, sometimes a high-lift track conversion buys you the clearance and saves the whole plan. Checklist Item Three: Power, Air, and Layout
Most two-post lifts sized for a home autolift garage ship with a single-phase power unit, and you will generally be choosing between 110-volt and 220-volt configurations. We push 220 whenever the building will support it. The motor comes up faster, draws less current, and does not brown out when the compressor kicks on at the same time. That means planning a dedicated circuit near the power-side column, not a extension cord run from the house. Get an electrician involved during the concrete stage, not after the lift is standing.
Layout matters as much as power. You need bay width for the columns plus door swing plus a walking lane, and you need enough run-out in front and behind so you can drop an engine cradle or pull a driveshaft without hitting a wall. In a 30×40 building, one two-post down the middle of one half leaves room for a bench, a compressor, and a tire stack on the other. Do not forget the air line — the lock release on most two-posts is air actuated, so you want a quarter-inch line reaching the column, and an impact hookup near the lift saves you a hundred trips a year. Finally, think about lighting. Overhead LEDs directly above where the vehicle will sit end up shadowed by the car. Put light on the walls and low on the columns and your autolift garage will feel twice as usable.
Budgeting an Autolift Garage the Honest Way
We do not publish exact prices because freight, anchors, and site work swing the total more than the lift itself. What we can give you is tiers. A quality entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 pound two-post from a home-market brand like BendPak or Atlas lands in the lower tier and is genuinely appropriate for a hobbyist doing brakes, oil, and suspension. Step up to a commercial-grade Rotary or Challenger and you are in a middle tier, buying heavier steel, better cable sheaves, longer service life, and parts availability that will still be there in twenty years. Heavy-duty and specialty configurations sit above that.
Then budget the things people forget. Freight to a residential address usually requires a liftgate or a forklift on your end, and a curbside drop with no equipment is how a lift ends up sitting in your driveway for a week. Anchors, concrete work if the slab needs pads, electrical, an air drop, and professional installation all belong in the plan.
