An RV and trailer service shop in northern Missouri called us in late winter about building out an autolift garage bay that could handle seasonal storage work — coaches in for winterizing, tow vehicles in for brake jobs, and travel trailers coming back out in April. They had a 40-foot bay with a decent slab and no lift at all. Everything was being done on jack stands, which is fine until you are doing it forty times between October and May. What follows is the honest version of that first year of ownership: what we specified, what the warranty actually covered, how the one claim went, and what we would tell the next shop in the same spot to do differently.

Why a Seasonal Storage Shop Needed Something Different
Most lift conversations start with vehicle weight. This one started with dwell time. A shop that winterizes RVs and stores customer tow vehicles is not cycling a lift up and down twenty times a day like a quick-lube. It is putting a vehicle up and leaving it there for hours, sometimes overnight, while a tech chases a slide-out motor or waits on a part. That changes what you buy. A 2-post is faster for wheel-off brake work, but it holds a vehicle by the frame the entire time, and it does not give you a second parking spot underneath. Their bay was doing double duty as overflow storage from November through March.
We ended up specifying a 14,000 lb capacity 4-post with extended runways and a rolling bridge jack, plus a mid-rise scissor on the adjacent side for the tow vehicles and pickups. That combination let them park a diesel dually on the 4-post overnight without worrying about hydraulic drift or arm restraints, and still do fast tire and brake work next to it. The mistake we see shops make when they build a storage-oriented setup is buying capacity they will never use while skipping the runway length they absolutely need. A 24-foot dually with a hitch does not fit on a standard 4-post runway, and no warranty in the world covers a lift you cannot load.
What the Warranty on a New Lift Actually Covers
Warranty language on automotive lifts is more standardized than most buyers expect, and also more limited. Structural steel — columns, runways, carriages, crossbeams — typically carries the longest coverage, often five years on commercial-grade equipment. Hydraulic cylinders and power units usually run one to two years. Electrical components, switches, solenoids, and controls are usually one year. Cables, chains, sheaves, slider blocks, and pads are wear items and are almost never covered past the initial defect window, because they are consumables the same way brake pads are.
What that means in practice for an autolift garage owner is that the expensive catastrophic stuff is protected for a long time and the annoying stuff is on you. We tell every customer the same thing at signoff: the odds of your columns failing are near zero, the odds of a limit switch acting up in year two are real, and the odds of you needing slider blocks by year four depend entirely on whether you grease them. The other clause people skip is the installation requirement. Nearly every manufacturer voids or limits coverage if the lift was not installed to spec — anchor torque, slab thickness, concrete cure time, and electrical supply all matter. We document anchor torque and slab depth on every install for exactly this reason, because a photo and a torque log settle a warranty argument in about five minutes.
The Concrete and Power Homework Nobody Wants to Do
Their slab was poured in the early 2000s and nobody had records. We cored it in two spots and found just over five inches of decent concrete with no reinforcement worth counting on. That is adequate for the 4-post, which spreads load across four base plates, but marginal for a heavier 2-post where each column concentrates load on a small footprint. Most manufacturers spec a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for standard-capacity lifts and more as capacity climbs. Cut pads are the fix when the existing slab does not measure up — you saw out a section under each column, dig down, and pour a properly sized reinforced pad tied to the existing floor.
Power was the other holdup. They had a single 120V circuit in that bay and a panel with two open slots. The power unit we specified wanted 208-230V single phase, and running that circuit meant an electrician and a permit. We would rather delay an install two weeks than watch someone run a lift on an undersized extension cord and then wonder why the motor overheats. Undervoltage is one of the top three causes of premature power unit failure we see, and it is not a warranty item — the manufacturer will look at the burned windings and tell you the supply was wrong. Get the electrical right before the truck shows up with your equipment.
Install Day and the First Ninety Days
Install took a day and a half. Columns set, runways leveled to within an eighth of an inch across the span, anchors torqued and logged, hydraulic lines bled, and then the part that matters most: the cycle test. We run a new lift empty through its full travel repeatedly, then loaded, checking that all four corners engage their locks simultaneously and that the equalization system holds level under load. On this unit one corner was dropping into its lock about a half-second behind the others, which meant a cable adjustment. Twenty minutes of turnbuckle work and it was synchronized.
The first ninety days of any new autolift garage installation are when the small stuff shows up. Hydraulic fittings weep a little as the system settles and seals seat. Cables stretch and need a re-tension at the thirty-day mark — this is normal and it is in the manual, though nobody reads that page. Locks that felt crisp on install day can start clacking if debris gets into the ladder. We schedule a follow-up visit at roughly a month for commercial installs specifically to catch these, because a customer who thinks a weeping fitting is a defect will file a warranty claim, and a customer who understands it is a torque adjustment will just call us. Setting expectations at handoff prevents most of the friction.
How the One Real Warranty Claim Went
Month seven, they lost lift on the rear. The power unit ran, the pump made pressure, and the lift crept up an inch and stopped. The tech on site did the right first thing and checked fluid level, which was fine. When they called us, the description pointed at either an internal cylinder bypass or a stuck velocity fuse. We had them cycle it down and listen — you can often hear a bypassing cylinder as fluid moving with no motion.
The claim process itself is straightforward when you have documentation. We pulled the serial number and install date off our records, photographed the cylinder and the fluid condition, and submitted to the manufacturer with our torque log and the install photos from day one. Approval came back in under a week for a replacement cylinder under the hydraulic component warranty. Labor is where people get surprised: many warranties cover the part, not the labor to install it, and that split is buried in the fine print. We ate part of the labor on this one because the shop was in the middle of RV season and we would rather keep a relationship than argue over a few hours. Maintenance That Keeps the Coverage Alive
Warranty coverage is conditional on maintenance, and manufacturers do enforce it. The baseline for a 4-post is straightforward. Check hydraulic fluid monthly and top off with the specified fluid — not ATF, not whatever is on the shelf. Inspect cables visually every month for broken strands, kinking, or corrosion, and replace any cable with visible strand breaks regardless of how it feels. Grease the slider blocks and cable sheaves quarterly. Verify all four locks engage together every time you lift. Blow out the lock ladders when the shop gets dusty, which in a trailer shop is always.

A shop with a two-year log gets the benefit of the doubt. A shop with nothing gets a fight. What We Would Tell the Next Shop Buying One
A year in, that northern Missouri shop is doing about triple the seasonal volume they were doing on jack stands, and the only unplanned expense was the cylinder that the manufacturer covered. First, we would have specified the longer runway option from the start instead of adding runway extensions later — the price delta up front is smaller than the retrofit. Second, we would have run a 240V circuit with capacity for a second lift while the electrician was already there, because they are now talking about a second bay and that trench is going to get dug twice.
