Autolift Garage in a Quad Cities Municipal Shop: Daily Maintenance and Cylinder Care

A Quad Cities municipal fleet manager called us in April with a straightforward request: help write a daily-maintenance routine for the autolift garage his crew uses every single shift. His trucks come in with road salt, sand, and whatever else the winter left behind, and his lift was showing the wear you would expect from that kind of duty. What daily really means in a municipal shop

Daily maintenance in a municipal autolift garage is not a full inspection, and pretending otherwise burns crew patience by the second week. What it should be is a five-point visual walkaround before the first truck of the day gets loaded. Fluid level at sight glass. No fresh puddles under either column. Cables visibly tight and centered on their sheaves. Arm restraint gears clicking cleanly when the arms swing. Pads present, undamaged, and stored where they belong. If any point fails, the lift comes out of service until it is fixed. This routine takes eight minutes when the shop is cold and even less once the crew is in the rhythm. The salt problem and how to counter it

Trucks that plow roads bring salt into the shop in a way no passenger vehicle ever does. Salt water drips off wheel wells and pools around column bases. Over years that puddle eats through paint, then through steel, and eventually through the anchor rod that ties the column to the slab. We recommend a squeegee at every column at the end of every shift, a shop vac with a wet head for the deep puddles, and a fresh coat of column paint every three to four years. It sounds fussy. Fluid level and quality checks

Hydraulic fluid on a two-post lift lives in a reservoir tucked into one of the columns. The manufacturer specifies a fluid type and a fill level, and both matter. Wrong fluid causes seal swell that leads to leaks. Low fluid causes cavitation that damages the pump. Fluid that has turned milky is water-contaminated and needs a full flush. Fluid that is dark and thin has been overheated and needs replacement. Fluid that is clear and amber is doing its job and can stay. Sampling once a year takes ten minutes and saves cylinders.

The cylinder rebuild decision in a public-works budget

Municipal budgets do not flex, so cylinder rebuilds have to be planned. On a two-post lift that has been in service ten years or more, expect one or both cylinders to need seals inside the next three years. Rebuild kits are inexpensive and can be scheduled during a slow week. Replacement cylinders are more expensive and involve longer downtime. The move is to identify weeping early through the daily fluid-level check, order a rebuild kit before the seal actually fails, and schedule the rebuild during a natural slow window. Cable and lock inspection on a monthly cycle

Cables and mechanical locks do not need daily attention but they do need monthly attention. Once a month the crew should raise the lift with no load, walk both columns with a flashlight, and look at every visible cable inch by inch for broken strands, birdcaging, or corrosion. Then engage and release the locks at three heights and listen for uneven engagement. A cable that shows any broken strands gets replaced. What to stock and what to order on demand

Stock on the shelf: one cylinder rebuild kit for your lift model, four spare pads with correct stems, a spare arm-restraint gear, and enough hydraulic fluid for one full reservoir change. Order on demand: full cable sets, replacement cylinders, replacement pump. The reason for the split is shelf life and cost. Rebuild kits and pads are cheap and do not degrade. Cables and pumps are expensive and can be shipped in two or three days from our warehouse.
