A two post lift daily inspection is the cheapest insurance in your shop, and it’s the one thing almost nobody does consistently. A cable was fraying for months. A lock had been sticking since spring. An anchor bolt had been loose since the concrete cured wrong three years ago. Somebody noticed something felt off and kept lifting cars anyway. Ninety seconds each morning, done honestly, catches almost all of it before it turns into a bent rocker panel or an OSHA conversation.

Why the daily check exists at all
ANSI/ALI ALOI, the standard that governs lift operation in the United States, splits inspection into layers. There’s the annual, which has to be done by a qualified inspector and covers everything from anchor torque to structural welds. There’s the periodic maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual. And then there’s the daily — the pre-use check the operator performs before the first vehicle goes up. The daily isn’t a watered-down version of the annual. It’s a different job. The annual asks “is this lift structurally sound?” The daily asks “did anything change since yesterday?”
That distinction matters because most in-service lift failures are progressive. Cables don’t snap out of nowhere; they lose strands one at a time. Lock latches don’t stop engaging overnight; they start catching a half-second late, then a full second, then not at all. Hydraulic seals seep before they blow. A daily check is the only inspection frequent enough to notice a trend. We’ve had shops in central Iowa where the morning walk-around caught a broken equalizer cable strand on a Rotary SPO12 that would not have shown up again until the annual eleven months later. Eleven months of lifting three-quarter-ton pickups on a degrading cable is not a risk anyone would knowingly take — but that’s exactly what skipping the daily buys you. The ninety-second walk-around, in order
Order matters, because a routine you can do the same way every morning is a routine you’ll actually do. Start at the power unit. Look at the oil level in the reservoir sight glass or dipstick — low fluid is the single most common thing our techs find. Look under and around the unit for fresh fluid on the floor. Fresh means wet and shiny; old stains are a different conversation but still worth noting. Listen when you cycle the lift up empty: a healthy pump has one sound, and a pump starting to cavitate has another.
Then walk the columns. Eyeball both cable runs top and bottom where you can see them — sheave areas, anchor points, any spot where the cable changes direction. Look for broken strands, kinks, flattening, or rust bleed. Check that the columns still meet the floor cleanly with no gaps, no spalled concrete around the anchors, no rust jacking under the base plates. Cycle the lift to a comfortable working height with nothing on it and listen for the locks. You should hear four distinct clicks as it rises. Then hit the down handle and confirm all four release together. Finally, check the arms: restraints engage and hold, adapters and pads present and not crushed, pins secure. Wiggle each arm. Cables get their own paragraph for a reason
On a two post lift, the equalizer cables don’t hold the vehicle up — hydraulics do that. What the cables do is keep the two carriages level with each other. When a cable fails on a lift under load, the carriages go out of sync, and the vehicle tilts. On some lifts the locks will catch it. On some, at some heights, they won’t catch it fast enough or evenly enough, and the load shifts. That’s the failure mode that puts vehicles on the floor.
So during your two post lift daily inspection, give the cables more attention than anything else. Broken strands are the obvious tell — run a rag along an accessible section and it’ll snag on a broken wire before your eye finds it. Look for a cable that’s gone slack on one side while the other is taut, which means it’s stretched or the sheave is binding. Look for rust bleed, which usually means the internal core lubricant is gone. And listen: a dry cable running over a dry sheave has a distinct dry squeal. Findings that mean stop, not “note it”
The hardest part of a two post lift daily inspection isn’t the looking. It’s having the discipline to tag the lift out when you find something. Shops are busy. There’s a car on the hook and a customer in the lobby. We understand the pressure, and we still say: some findings mean the lift comes out of service until it’s fixed.
Any broken cable strand. Any lock that doesn’t engage or doesn’t release with the others. Any loose or missing anchor bolt, or visible cracking and spalling in the concrete around a base plate. Any arm restraint that won’t hold. Any active hydraulic leak that’s dripping rather than weeping. Any bent or gouged structural member. Any control that doesn’t respond exactly as it should — especially a lift that creeps down under load, which points at a seal or a valve and never fixes itself. Put a physical tag on the control handle, not just a note on a whiteboard, and pull the power if you can. We’ve seen a tagged lift get used because the tag was a sticky note and the night shift didn’t know what it meant. Write what’s wrong and who to call.
Who does it, and how you prove it happened
The daily belongs to whoever uses the lift, which in most shops means every tech and, in a home garage, means you. That’s an advantage: the person who operates the equipment every day is the person who’ll notice the sound changed. But it’s also the reason daily checks quietly disappear — when it’s everybody’s job, it’s nobody’s job.
The shops that keep it going make it structural. A clipboard on each column with a month of dated squares. A one-line entry in the shop management system before the first ticket. A morning huddle where the lead asks who checked which bay. It doesn’t need to be sophisticated; it needs to leave a record. That record does two things. First, it gives you trend data — three months of “lock #3 slow to engage” is a maintenance work order, not a mystery. Second, it protects you. If a vehicle ever does come off a lift in your shop, the first question from every insurer, attorney, and inspector will be about your inspection records. “We check it every day” is worth very little. A signed log with dates and initials is worth a great deal. We’ve watched both scenarios play out with Iowa shops, and the difference in how the aftermath went was substantial.
What the daily doesn’t cover
A two post lift daily inspection is a change-detection tool, not a substitute for real maintenance or for a qualified annual. There are things it structurally can’t catch. Anchor bolt torque needs a torque wrench and a spec sheet — you can see a loose bolt, but you can’t see one that’s at 60 percent of spec. Internal cylinder condition, hidden weld cracks, sheave bearing wear inside the housing, chain wear on chain-drive designs, hydraulic hose internal degradation — none of that shows up in a walk-around.
That’s why the layers exist. The daily catches the fast-moving stuff. The manufacturer’s periodic maintenance schedule — greasing, cleaning, adjusting the locks, checking the level, changing hydraulic fluid at the recommended interval — handles the wear items. And the ALI-certified annual catches everything that requires tools, torque specs, and someone who’s seen a few hundred lifts. Making it stick in a real Iowa shop
Here’s what we’ve seen actually work. Tie the two post lift daily inspection to something the tech already does — clocking in, grabbing the first RO, unlocking the bay door. Habits attach to existing habits far better than they stand alone. Keep the checklist to one card, not a page; a form long enough to feel like paperwork gets pencil-whipped by week two.
